"Well, if the heat is bothering you then you're actually sort of in luck. Fall is coming in, so you'll find if you hang around for very long that every day will be getting successively cooler. In fact, this is the time of year when most people start looking for winter habitation, if they've been spending the summer weather living out in the open; I've started doing some browsing myself, and I would definitely recommend figuring out some sort of shelter. Or rather, that would be my recommendation if you're planning to be in these parts for a while."
Raphael had to correct himself halfway through the conversation; he was so used to his older brother role that it was hard to avoid moralizing when he didn't mean to. It wasn't that he didn't have sage advice to offer, he supposed, it was just...fell, it wasn't polite to offer unsolicited advice to new acquaintances. He was reasonably sure that had been the topic of at least ONE lecture from his father, or at least part of a lecture. At any rate, lecturing was for younger siblings, not strangers!
Reflecting on that, he chuckled before commenting, "Then again, if you came from a colder place you undoubtably know more about what needs to be done for winter than we Lowlanders!"

She liked the idea that the hot seasons were coming to a halt. She would so enjoy the cooler seasons more welcomingly, though the suggestion of finding a sheltered home for the worst... She wasn't so sure about that, she had been out in worse weather then what could possibly happen in these southern lands. She felt she could last on her own without the need of real shelter besides her own coat, though time would tell.
"That would be an idea, but I'm sure I can handle going without shelter. Things couldn't be worse then the north... Could they?" she asked tilting her head a little to one side. "If I were to search for a place to stay, I wouldn't know where to go. I have really no friends or family down here. Just a lost soul wandering until it had found something to cling to." She shrugged referring to herself as something that always drifted, always searching, always wanting, but never finding.
She raised a brow a little as he called himself and those he might have lived with 'low landers'. Where they though? Sure she came from the north and they were always here in the south, but she didn't think of them as such. Turning her head away she stepped over to the cool water and dipped her head down to drink again, pondering over what was said and what might be said. Wondering if perhaps she should just return to the north and stay there...

At Alaska's question, Raphael found himself grinning. It was undoutable that she was new to the place, and perhaps even more obvious now that she was talking almost as much to herself as she was to him. Still, he knew that he'd probably be doing the same thing if he'd up and relocated to a new place where he didn't really know anyone!
So he was more than willing to cut the mare and her anxieties some slack, giving her a warm smile. "Well, you're asking the wrong stallion there, Alaska; I've never really been to the north, so I have no idea how our winters would compare. That said, even the toughest and most weather resistant of Soquilis can often do with a retreat out of the elements at least part of the time. Now, I don't really have all the details figured out or a map of the neighborhood to share with you, but if you'd like, I can give you a pseudo-tour of the area. I'm kinda new to THIS reach, but I do know that there are a lot of sheltered areas, caves and tree nooks and the like. My father is fond of the mountains because of the waters up there, but he and my mother are firmly of the opinion that the foothills offer the best living possibilities between the rocks and the forest and the like."
Breaking off there, Raphael ran a wing over his neck in slight self-conscienceness, realizing that he'd been rambling there for a bit longer than was proper. But ah well; she'd seemed a bit anxious, and having grown up with the parents he had, there was nothing Raphael was more keyed into than helping calm anxieties. Well, mostly.

Alaska tilted her head a little as the stallion mentioned that he had never been as far north as she, well she hadn't really thought of that, she was new here and those from here would be new to her homeland to the north. So there was where things seemed to pull even. Even as his smile went unseen she could feel the air lighten some about them.
"A tour might be good, it will get one familiar with the area for when the cold times in this area come. I would think that the storms back home would be about five times worse then those down here. From nomad horses that traveled from place to place, that the more southern lands were quite beautiful. "But I'm sure you know more about this area then I do. If I were any other Soquili, I could find mine own way about. Sadly the snow from the north had claimed what most rely on. The gift of sight and knowing what they were looking at." Her head lowered a little. "Sorry, I have spoken too much. One should just be seen and not heard."
Turning her head away from Raphael and closed her blank eyes so that they couldn't be seen. She had told one her story on how she lost her sight, and would try and keep it to that one other. If there came a time that she had to tell, she would. But only to someone she trusted just as much as Ama...

So then, there WAS a reason behind the incredibly pale, milky eyes. Raphael had been raised to be too much of a gentleman to ask personal questions, so if Alaska hadn't volunteered that infomation they could have gone on NOT discussing that subject indefinitely. As it was, having her voluntarily confirm what had only been a suspicion was a relief, if only because now he didn't have to feel awkward about the way he was standing!
He continued to punctuate their conversation with gestures, though, more out of force of habit than anything else. "Well, familiarity is the general intent; things might be warmer here than you're used to, but that doesn't mean that they can't have bite all their own; it's really best to have a warm sheltered place to fall back on prior to the fact. But don't worry, its my pleasure."
He was still smiling, even when Alaska frowned, apologized, and looked away. She must come from a very rule-rigid community if she bought THAT old axiom! Granted, there were times when silence was best, but if you always expected silence, then life would be very dull indeed.
That in mind, he stepped closer and gently reached out with one wing, ever so lightly touching her chin in an attempt to tilt her head back up. "Apologies for the informality, Alaska, I just don't like seeing people uneccesarily harsh on themselves. Don't think that I'm one of those grouchy old types, you can talk as much or as little as you want."
Much better.
