Nodding in agreement, he could find little fault with her reasoning. When she stuck out her tongue, however, he blinked, grinning slowly at the childish behavior, and then laughing himself. There was a certain element of unpredictability, and a charming air of confidence about her--a trait, he couldn't help but observe privately, that he had encountered before.

"Sounds good to me!" he replied, content to follow her lead, and to choose the length and location of this race. It had been awhile since he'd really stretched his legs, and he was already looking forward to having an excuse to do so. Hesitating only a moment, he eyed Marut curiously a moment. "So what happens to the loser?" He might not be one to be fussed about winning or losing, but he wasn't quite so oblivious as to not realize that there was usually something earned, or lost, depending on any competition's outcome.

'Okay, see that pine tree waaaay over there that's all on its own?' Marut squinted into the distance, the single evergreen tree was like a solitary green finger poking up from the horizon.

'We'll race to there, from right here, how does that sound?' she looked at Espiridion and chuckled.

'The looooser,' she said in a low voice, as if she was thinking of something dreadfully awful or painful that would be inflicted on the poor Soquili that was slow enough to come in last.

'Loses?' she grinned.
'I like to race, if I win, then that's a bonus, but if I lose it means I train to be faster than I am and race them again. Losing should make you strive to do better, not feel like a failure.'

"...Okay!" The pine tree in question was fairly far away...but it would make the race more fun, he figured.

As the mare appeared to think over just what the loser would have to do, he couldn't help but tense. The way she'd drawn out the word made him rather nervous, and edgy.

When she finished, however, he just blinked. ...What? As she explained, and it sunk in a bit more, however, he returned her grin with a slightly-shy one of his own. That sounded a lot better than the usual approach to winning and losing, he couldn't help but notice.

"I'm ready when you are, then..." Tossing his head, Epi pawed lightly at the ground, looking to her for a signal that she was ready to go, also.

Marut grinned, having seen his expression change when she was teasing him, and then the seeming relief when she'd finished explaining. Why should there be punishment for losing anyway? Some might consider the losing to be a punishment in itself, but as she'd explained she didn't.
She was pleased to see he seemed to be relaxing around her, but more so that he wanted to race.

'Okay..' Marut looked out at the tree, and breathed slowly and deeply, making sure she was ready, stretching her legs and shaking her neck out. It was clear that whilst she would happily lose or win, racing meant alot to her.

'Ready..set..GO!' she yelled, pushing off from their starting position a fraction of a second after she shouted 'go'.

Taking off almost at the same instant as the mare beside him, Espi started out strong, slender legs moving easily across the uneven terrain. As the goal drew closer, and a pleasing sort of fatigue crept through his muscles, he realized that he wasn't even paying attention to how close he was to Marut, or even to who was winning.

He could feel the wind rushing through his mane, catching ever-so-gently as it blew through his antlers. With his return to being aware of the fact that he'd not even been keeping track of where his opponent was in relation to himself, he fell slightly off his pace, nearly tripping as his distraction made him miss a small dip in the ground. Looking around swiftly, he took stock of their respective positions, even as he picked his pace back up.

((I figured you could decide who wins XDDD Espi I don't see as being overly fast, so it's cool if Marut creams him~ ))

(( Lol k =))

Marut was pleasantly surprised when Espiridion swiftly outstripped her pace on the first stretch; he had a fair sprint on him. She soon caught up however as she had built up stamina from racing so much, she had a kick herself but usually on the homestretch.

She saw him stumble slightly, and although it slowed him, he didn't stop or seem hurt. She took advantage of his slowing and thudded past him, tail and mane streaming behind her, her face free from her hair for once.

Marut saw the tree getting closer, and she could also hear the stallion near to her as well. She pushed herself, and skidded to a halt, turning so that her hip bumped into the conifer's trunk, a few seconds before Espiridion finished.

Gathering what remained of his strength, Espi pounded after her--nothing could duplicate that feeling, the way the wind whistled past one's ears, or lifted one's mane when sprinting flat-out...although a childhood attempt at 'flying' at the urging of a friend had come close.

He saw Marut bump lightly up against the conifer first, and had to pull himself up short to avoid tripping over her, dancing sideways so that he breezed by her instead, sopping a few paces past both the victorious mare, and the tree that had served as their finish line.

Taking a moment to catch his breath, lavender sides heaving with the effort, Epi grinned at her, nonetheless.

"Good race!" She seemed far less winded than he, which embarrassed him, ever-so-slightly. However, since she said she did this kind of thing often, he wasn't as surprised as he could have been. "What...else do you like to do?" His breathing was slowly returning to normal, and curiosity rearing its head.

She looked him over as he regained his breath a bit after hers had returned to normal. Espiridion had proved to be a better racer than he looked, and she told him so;
'It was a good race, gave me a good run.' she smiled at the antlered stallion.

'Else? Well when I'm not annoying my brothers, or meeting other Soquilis, I like to spar, or go wandering.' she chuckled, adding;
'Or get messy, as I know my mother loves it when I turn up to visit her looking like I've rolled in a ditch.'

Agreeing again, he nodded. That had been fun. Even if he had lost. "Maybe next time we meet, I can give you more of a challenge," he offered easily, tossing his head, the action having the desired effect, shifting a particularly irritating lock of hair so that it no longer obstructed his line of vision.

Staring at her a moment, Epi chuckled, as well. He couldn't imagine being that deliberately contrary, and wasn't overly fond of being dirty himself, but it sounded amusing nonetheless. "So you're close to your family then?"

'I'm close to some of my family members.' she replied with a shake of her head, going on to say;
'There's Kalona in my family, and so some of my relatives are not safe to be around..and some I just don't get on with.' she chewed on her lower lip.

'Are you close to yours then?'

Nodding, he acknowledged her answer, wondering just how large of a family she was a part of. Debating, Epi tilted his head slightly to the side, thinking for a moment before he answered her question. "I wouldn't necessarily use the word 'close' to describe them--I love my kin dearly, but since I was young, I've spent a lot of time on my own." He'd been incredibly skittish, as a foal, although he had mercifully outgrown a lot of that--once he'd grown larger than the majority of the beings he encountered in his wanderings, he'd found it a little bit easier to take things in stride.

"What, exactly, is a kalona like?" He finally asked a moment later, looking sligthly awkward, as if he were afraid he might offend. He'd heard stories of them, after all, but had never seen one.

Marut nodded;
'My sister is a little like, she has a deep seated fear of our Grandmother who is a Kalona, and a wicked one at that. She keeps much to herself but I've been trying to help her through her fears.'

Marut fell quiet at his question. There were so many answers to that really, and she said so;
'There is no easy answer to that because not all Kalona live up to their heritage. My mother is half Kalona, and she is a wonderful mother, and a faithful daughter until her own mother attacked her.' she paused, adding;
My grandmother - now she is probably an example of what most would say a Kalona is like. Vicious, predatory and an eater of flesh.'

She hoped he wouldn't look at her differently as he found out about the unsavoury parts of her family, but she knew it was inevitable that some would judge on where her blood came from.
