when you name your characters by hitting random letters on your key board until you get one something that sounds like a name. (i.e: dhfkaghioruowjicovmkofmdotjdjfowjeiomd Kaghi? Hioru? Ruowji? Jicov?Comkof? Kofmdot? Fowjei? etc. etc)

When in every story you start writing, eventually, you REALLY want to put in an epic battle that most likely will involve super human powers.

you're thinking about things that aren't real.

as if this is going to happen.

--By the time you've finished the story, you've changed at least one character's age 5 times, name 3, appearance 50, and the plot totally isn't what it was on that first magical day when you opened up MS Word and typed those first glorious words.

Same. At one point I couldn't work on this one story of mine, and when I finally got to it again, the younger brother of one of my characters had aged 6 years because he had become a more important character and I wanted the age difference to be smaller, and I had resolved a problem where their older brother, who I'd had 2 different personality ideas for the same character by making him 2 characters, and then I made a third, who had origionally been a cousin, into a third brother and made those three characters into triplets. And then I forgot one of thier names, so it kinda changed. sweatdrop

You know you write fantasy when:

~You find yourself trying to learn Elven and install Dwarven runes to feature in your writing.~
~You make up words and eventually a language then come up with an alphabet for it.~ sweatdrop
~You have an entire universe bouncing around in your head, fully picturing this world, and have to balance conveying tons of information and staying interesting.~
~It's hard to realize that HEY reality is NOTHING like the book you're working on, and when you do it's utterly depressing.~ crying

Couldn't have said it better myself! I spent MONTHS developing the language for one of my non-human species while totally neglecting the book. Meanwhile, the book still isn't done, neither is the language, and I find myself talking to my kids in a foreign language that doesn't exist! :: laughs her way into a straight jacket :: Nothing steals you away like a fantasy.

when you spend months obsessing over the details of the world in which your story takes place, knowing full well that less then half of them are actually going to have any sort of signigicance to the plot.

You you know write fantasy when:
- you find yourself wishing for the daydreams to return so you can write it down
- your names of people and things are very strange looking
- there's a hint of magic behind what you do
- you spend your free time reading incessantly or trying to find a new, wonderful rp you've never heard of before
