It may help to say which sources we are to take into account in this discussion. In Susan Kay's book, Christine pretty much comes out and says she loves Erik and may even bear his child. In Leroux's book and the play, its hard to say what she feels about anything because we hear only what she says and not what she thinks or feels. And her words aren't even very reliable because she proves herself to be a liar several times over in the book.

Good point. Especially since she seems to lie most to ERIK! Blah. He really does deserve sooooo much better. I think he and Meg should get together. I never liked Christine and always thought she uses everyone, Erik for Music, Meg for friendship, and Raoul for money and position. She only loves herself.

I just finished reading Susan Kay's book, and she brings up some really good points in her author's notes. If Christine feels nothing but fear for Erik, why did she consistently return to him when she knew who he was and what he was capable of? Pity doesn't seem like a strong enough emotion to drive someone back into the lair of a murderer of questionable sanity time and time again. Especially when Raoul was there, desperate to take her away from everything.

Well I suppose it does really depend on what version you base it off of....but even in Leroux's Christine does love him at the end, not a passionate love that this day and age seems to cherish, but sort of a sympathetic understanding love and I don't believe, even after he let her go, that she ever forgot the expierence (she was loyal enough to come back and give him his ring...) but Raoul was her first love, a childish puppy love this era does cherish. And I mean c'mon people we can't just forgive the phantom of everything he did, he chose Christine becuase she was innocent enough to fall into his trap, and she was a young girl, not used to attention. I'm sure if any of you women put yourself in the place of Christine you know it's a wonderful feeling to be adored, and you'd have a hard time cutting off a relationship with the phantom (realistically thinking....) becuase he's murderous and creepy o.<

((revived enough?))

I think she was more infatuated or obsessed with Erik as Erik was obsessed and infatuated with her. I think Christine saw Erik/The Phantom/The Angel as synonymous with her departed father and thus not nessisarily a romantic love interest. 3nodding

Though when the spell began to wear off, I think she pitied him rather than loved him. Maybe she felt that she could save him and his humanity somehow? You know that "save the world" complex some people have? XD

(This opinion based off of the Musical and THE book 3nodding )

Being a large fan of Phantom (yet too poor to see the live shows *cries*) I beleive she truely does love the phantom in a diffrence sence than Raoul. The phantom is her soulmate in music while Raoul is her true love. I guess it sounds silly but when you have people indulged in music the way Christine & Especially the Phantom are I beleive they are bound by the Soul & music. That & Christine saw the Phantom for who he really was, and after seeing the movie I would confirm it. But that is just an opinion of mine.

Too add onto what I said on that forum I'm gonna say that Christine was drawn to the phantom because her father had promised "The Angel of Music" to her when he died so I think it was more of an obligated attraction 3nodding

She thought she did, so she merely played along...in the end, she conformed to society's views/ways and married the rich fop.

To me it seemed that is was a kind student love. Kinda of a "I love my teacher because he taught me some much" some like that. But I'm happy Christine went with Raoul, so now the Phantom is all mine!!!!!!!

Keep in mind that she was basically coerced into agreeing to his engagemnt though. And she doesn't seem too thrilled about it in the book or nstage.

Christine, I believe, was deeply infatuated with Erik. When she was with Raoul, it was a sweet romance, flowers and shooting stars and the like.

But when she was with Erik... it appeals strongly to her darker side, the side we all have (some more than others), and tend to keep hidden. Erik worshipped her, was obsessed with her, and I think that appealed to her. Logic didn't apply when she was in close proximity to him. There was also a strong sexual side to Christine & Erik's relationship. Everything about it was raw, primal: obsession, lust, fear, etc. Owing to a mix of these emotions, I believe she _did_ love him, in some twisted way.

Also, I can understand her choice to leave with Raoul. This doesn't mean I agree with it, however. x_X
