"Just not... back that way," he said gesturing to where he had come from. "I've already been there. So anywhere my hooves take me I guess. Unless you'd like to choose a direction?" Not that he minded. He never made a conscience decision to go one way or the other. He sort of just let it happen one way or the other. Maybe that was another problem he had, just hoping that these things would find him if he searched for them, albeit not very hard or well, and more in the sense that if he wandered, they'd find him.

He supposed he'd have to change some things with the fact that he was no longer traveling alone. But he was not turned off to such adjustments. Because it meant he'd never be alone.

((end? yes, no, maybe? Thoughts, opinions?))

A quiet eye was cast towards the way he'd come before the mare nodded a quiet confirmation. "Hm..." She lifted her face for a moment towards the mountains, feeling the northern winds blowing before she gestured in the direction they'd gone. "Something about that direction makes me want to start moving... Shall we?" Feryal smiled gently and took a small step, feeling more enthusiastic than she had been in a long while. What could go wrong with a new beginning...?

((-ponderputter- We could end it here... Or, we could skip to sometime later in their journey~ I've got many a less-than-friendly Soquili to stir up trouble, if we wanted. xD))

It had been a couple of days now, the sun slowly setting in the distance. Its light turned the sky reds and purples as it faded and air cooled in their favor. The cooler air had, under these new circumstances, made him smile every time it came as though it were a gift one could never tire of. He had upon being asked recounted several of his adventures, none of them too glorious but luckily he had had enough successes to not have to tell of his failures, to even pick his favorites among the successes. It certainly was nice to have an audience who was in turn a companion with their own conversation and their own need for him to listen.

He picked up his pace a little. The cooler air was crisp but it gave it a sort of fresh taste to it and had the ability to energize him if only for a short period of time. They'd need to find a safe place soon before all that went bump in the night showed their faces. "See anything of interest?" he asked looking about him as he trotted.

Her breath escaped in misty puffs that trickled slowly upward to the dying colors of the sky, like friendly spirits leading the sun into a peaceful afterlife. It was... comfortable, traveling this way. Sometimes they'd share stories, memories she'd never had the opportunity to tell before, and on occasion, there was a tranquil kind of silence. It never felt too terribly awkward, even when Feryal didn't have anything to say. There were so many things to see, and the colder weather was beginning to make her prance like a young filly again. The only way it could possibly get better is if it were to snow, but the mare wasn't holding any high hopes.

The chains around her neck jingled faintly as she twisted her head, thoughtfully musing. "No... Though, the sunset's beautiful." Such an arrangement of colors splashed up against the belly of the sky... It pleased her in a way she couldn't describe. The dimming light suddenly offered a mere glimpse of a forest ahead, somehow ancient and foreboding in its solitude. "Theres a forest there." She slowed for a moment to glance at the stallion. "Well... It's either risk being out in the open when night falls, or take our chances with whatever might be calling that place home... What do you suggest?"

Beaumains felt like he was running out of stories but he didn't tire of hearing hers. He didn't realize how much social interaction he sacrificed by being a singular nomad. There was a companionship but also he learned things from listening to her and gained appreciation for them which he would have never done otherwise without such interaction. That and however dull she might find her stories, they were always interesting to him, and they were exotic in a way. Really, he had tried to make his life so complicated that he had skipped over the simple things and was beginning to realize just how important they were, that he couldn't pretend they weren't necessary any longer.

His thoughts were interrupted by her speech and he turned to give her his full attention. Beaumains' gaze followed to glance at the sunset and give an appreciative nod. Then he turned to look at the forest and ponder. "Well, I don't much like how vulnerable we are in the open but then again, in the forest, we're much more cramped and easily trapped. Perhaps we should stay in the open then. At least that way we should be able to see any threats coming." He paused with a thought. "Or maybe we should walk next to the forest so just in case, we have cover to dash into, until we find something suitable. Or even just rest there. What do you think?" Really, there were pros and cons to each decision. The problem was weighing them against each other.

Feryal wordlessly dipped her head in consent; when night fell, there was no telling what manner of winged creature could take them by surprise. His words held true for the forest as well. If they got trapped within the gnarled branches and thickened tree trunks, their nameless assailant would know the terrain much better and could easily pick them off. "Sounds like a happy medium to me." She mused, stretching her legs to bring her closer to the forest's edge. It was old and very much alive, rustling with the sounds of the night. Her tail flicked absently, though for the most part, the mare appeared unconcerned. "I suppose you can keep watch on the plains, and I'll monitor the forest?"

A simple suggestion, but wouldn't two pairs of eyes be better than one? They could each give an alarm should something be skulking in their midsts. An ear twitched back to listen for Beaumains, for she wasn't foolish enough to simply trot on alone. That was the whole point of them sticking together, hm?

He nodded curtly. "That sounds like a good idea to me." He wasn't too keen on traveling at night. However he was even less willing to rest somewhere where he knew he could be overwhelmed. He wanted the advantage to be in his favor as often as possible. So without a shelter in which there was only one way danger could come from, they continued on. Something about the place didn't feel right as it was. It wasn't obvious. The night was quiet so they should be able to hear danger. No, it was a much more subtle feeling, one that could be easily dismissed as folly thinking. He pressed his body closer to her's if only to reassure the feeling of safety, of the warmth of another. Beaumains would be the last to admit he was scared. No, he was just feeling very cautious.

Along the way, a sure step forward, encouraged by the fact nothing out of the ordinary had happened so far, found no ground for footing. With a whinny of alarm and half a buck of startlement, his eyes widened as the ground before them seemed to dissolve into a wide hole, leaves falling down after the dirt in a carefree fashion. Beaumains huffed air in insult but calmed himself to look worriedly at Feryal. "You alright?" Admittedly, he was at the moment more concerned with who could have heard the sound of the cover crashing down into the hole. He suddenly felt a little more vulnerable than usual.

He was uneasy. So was she.

She wasn't exactly sure what was wrong, but she could feel it too. That vague, thinly veiled sensation that something was off, even if only a little bit. When Beaumains pressed close, she murmured wordlessly and leaned back. But it was all right--there were two of them, and it was practically certain that they could handle anything thrown their way. At least, for a little while. Feryal nickered softly as though to reassure them both, keeping her pace mild as they slipped through the shadows cast by the forest. They were progressing smoothly for a time, but it all ended with the brittle snap of a twig--and the earth seemed to heave before it gave out right beneath their feet.

The mare had tossed her head with shock, rearing up in silent outcry before her hooves hit the ground hard, mere inches from the gaping hole. Her body trembling with adrenaline, she managed a quick nod of her head, tail lashing still. It was all right, she was okay--she just needed to convince herself of that now. "What was that?" That was brilliant. A hole, of course, but she was more wondering how it'd gotten to be like that. Why only that spot?

There was a rustle from somewhere in the distance. The unicorn froze with slightly pinned ears, staring intently at the spot. A moment or two passed, and there was nothing. "We aren't alone." She mumbled, and her tail flicked furiously with indecision.

Regardless of what some might believe, there were some who lived their whole lives without seeing a human. Beaumains was one of those. For all of the adventures he spoke of and all the heroics he had attempted might have involved humans but never directly. Never actually having laid eyes on them much less knowing how they moved or seeing their weapons in action. But having seen the damage some could do and hearing stories, he was instantly wary, afraid that they could be the cause of all this. Having two hands that allowed them to build and craft more things than a stallion made them advantaged. That some had bad intentions was worse.

No s**t we aren't alone the scared little voice inside him whined. But he kept his mouth shut because it was a selfishly mean thought, one he wouldn't have formed in a less stressful situation. Stepping between her and the woods, he pushed her away with his body slowly as they took each step so that it was a gradual thing. It allowed him to keep an eye on the forest but his skin twitched with nervousness.

Then the call of voices erupted from the woods, a huge rustle of the brush. His eyes went wide with fear and he nudged her if a bit bluntly with the idea of running, too caught in the moment to form the word. Run...

Her quivering limbs left her unstable, more prone to toppling when the unexpected nudge came. Instead, she simply leapt forward as if she'd been burned, eyes wide and nostrils flaring. A sharp n** would land itself on the stallion's dark shoulder, a frantic gesture to convey the same message he'd offered her only seconds ago. Feryal had never felt fear like this before, not even when confronted with nightmares of Kalona and Skinwalker alike. No, this was something new--and she realized it only when saddled horses burst from the cover of foliage and darkness straight towards them.

A whinny burst from her throat as she reared, instinctively lashing out with her front legs before she took off. Shouts flared up from behind her, fueling her panic and completely obliterating the idea that perhaps she was being herded into another, larger trap. The harsh bite of her chains slapped repeatedly into her neck as the mare fled, bolting and weaving around thickened trees in an attempt to lose her pursuers.

Something still gnawed at her mind, forcing her to a jerking halt so she could wheel about in a panic. Beaumains! Had he gotten away? The thundering of hoof beats made her entire body stiffen with panic, but she sought to clamp down on her fear. Standing like an idiot, she reasoned, wouldn't help anyone. She could only flee for now, shake off these demons that had clawed their way forth from seemingly out of nowhere, and keep all her senses alert for any sign of the other. Once more she fled, but no longer in blind panic; her heart still pounded in her chest, but Feryal made more attempts to further plunge herself into the forest, scrabbling over the rough terrain and conceal herself in the night.

It was all she could do for now.
