I'm a freshman, and luckily I am none of the sort. But it does piss me off when I see this other freshman sassing off other freshman marchers saying she's 'better' than some of us.

It especially pissed me off when she made a remark about me 'having' scoliosis (sp?) when I had the problem with arching my back while playing. I mean seriously, this girl plays clarinet, and I'm playing the mellophone this year. I wasn't realizing I was arching my back to get a better horn angle.
(the girl also says that our section leader is the worst mellophone player she's ever heard. but the worst part is that she never knew what a mellophone was until this year.)

Freshmen who think they know everything = annoying

Elitist upperclassmen = even more annoying than the former

Last year when I was a freshman, there was a sophomore (well, now a junior this year) in my section who insisted she was better than everyone else just because she had one more year's worth of marching experience. (Even though she got yelled at by the directors constantly for her poor marching, playing, etc....)
I totally understand where you are coming from; there's always the few freshmen that are just bad eggs. I'm happy to say the majority in our band aren't like that, though. =]

Yeah, freshmen can be annoying, and I don't deny that I was a little annoying as a freshman, but not as much, because I usually just kept quiet and let the upperclassmen critique my marching.

But there's this guy who's a senior, and it's his first year in marching band and colorguard, and he thinks he's all high and mighty and better than me because he just happened to have taken dance for eleven years beforehand. I think I should have a little more seniority over him, even though I'm a sophomore, because though I only took about seven years of dance, I still have a year of colorguard and marching under my belt. If anything, he and I should be equals.

At least he learned the routine and basics fairly quickly, so it isn't like he doesn't know anything at all about what he's talking about.

There was this one kid... I'm a junior and, inconveniently, I was having cramps this particular day. I lean down to tie my shoe, cramping, hating everyone to begin with, and then this kid who wasn't in his set at all, walks over to me and stands right in front of me, so that when I lift my head, I'm looking straight at his crotch. And he just stares and me and says, "You're at attention," before walking away to stand like, two steps out of the arch we're supposed to make.

Sadly I took it out on my freshman by kicking him in the shin.

I don't think there's ever been a freshman who has given us problems.
=]
We only get a handful of freshmen each year (small band), this year being the smallest group I've seen.
The worst we get is the freshmen who just can't stand still at attention.
/=
But honestly, most of our band gets twitchy after a while, so I don't blame them.

I know exactly what you mean about the Freshman. I admit I was a freakin brat the first month or so of my freshman year but I learned my place pretty quick.

We have like. A crap load of freshies this year and god are they annoying. We have a flute player who skipped out on most of band camp cause "her knee hurt" even though she played soccer in the mornings and at games just fine. We even have sophomores that STILL don't listen and act like they know everything. We seniors don't even act like that but I still call the freshman stupid. I know a couple of them that listen and act good andeverything but 2 people can't really make up for like....20 something.

I really do just want to punch half of my band and color gaurd in the face.

Oh that reminds me, Our rookie gaurd members are the worst too. They think that just because they hit us, It's our fault. Sometimes it is but most of the time with the rookies, no it's not. I've already gotten a busted lip this year from a rookie. She was like six steps off of where she was supposed to be standing still and I couldn't move because we don't move for two sets and her stupid flag slammed into my trombone and my mouth piece went up and messed up my lips. there was blood everywhere and this is what she told me "Damn it you stupid brat. Make sure you're in your spot next time so you don't make me hit you." then she turns to this other rookie and says "God these band kids are f***ing stupid. why don't they know hwere they're going?" I was going to punch her and rip her throat out or something but her instructor came over and started yelling at her for not being at her set and injuring me. Luckinly I didn't need stitches

our freshmen this year will not shut up and i really annoys everyone. we cant get anything done when they act like that. and then they go and act like they already know everything. and i hate it when they are "sick" and cant march so they sit out but you look at them sitting there and they look and act fine.

my god freshmen every year get worse! Im captain of the flagsquad, and i had to put everyone in the drills with the other section leaders. As i was trying to figure out what went wrong with one of the placements (two people in the same spot at the same time... ouch) one of the freshmen saxes was giving me a hard time telling me that i placed my girls wrong. Not a smart thing to say to a senior who was holding a six foot metal pole with a technicolor peace of material on the end... especially since HE went too far up the field. Lets just say i told my girl that if he's in her spot, to show know restraint with her moves and wack him if hes too close.

We don't have freshmen cuz our school district does things differently. Our high school starts with sophomores. I hate it when they just don't listen. For us symbol players are either percussionists that just suck or double reed players. The two double reed symbols are better than the percussion symbols we have. They are just so stupid. We tell them to hold for us (the snares) but they just stand there looking at us like deers in the headlights. We have 3 nick names for them. Napoleon and Pedro (one of them looks like Napoleon Dynamite), Beevus and Butthead, and Dumb and Dumber. Original, I know, but still. That's pretty much describes how stupid they are.

I'm a freshman sax, but seriously, this other freshman sax is sooo annoying...

He ends up in the wrong place while marching, but doesn't realize it, and when our section leader tells him that he went to the wrong dot, he yells out," I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT YOU KNOW WHAT I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT!!11!!!"

We had a decade day during band camp, and we each had to wear something from earlier/future decades. Anyone who actually participated was able to leave early. He had a shirt that said 1960 on it, and left. Everyone said it didn't count because all he did was wear a number, but he wouldn't listen.

By some fluke, he got higher than all of the saxophones on a test, and he decides to rub it in everyones face.

Theres much more, but I'm too lazy to type it all.

yeah, i'm in guard, and there's a freshman who thinks she's so perfect and tells me where i'm sposed to be, and when i tell her she's wrong (because i've memorized most of the drill) she says "are you looking at the drill sheets?" (btw i'm a sophomore)

she's such a pain in my @$$ scream

Don't get me wrong... I have lots of freshman friends. However, I hate it when some of them either don't play right, never make it to their spots, MOVE DURING HOLDS, or other, forgivable, mistakes... then have the gall to "instruct" older band kids on how to play/march "right". Everyone makes mistakes, but to make them and then comment on how other people need to "learn better", well, that just bugs me. Especially when some of them were one time mistakes.

Whoa, did I say that?
I take it back.
There's this freshman trombone player I want to punch in the face.
We were standing at attention in front of a large crowd at a football game and he's laughing and practically shouting.
x.x;;
I wanted to walk over to him and beat him to a pulp because it was annoying (and I hade a mjor headache that was building up because of it).
He's always talking when he has rests, and he just messes around in general.

Don't be hatin' on freshman!
I mean, yeah, freshmen can be jerks, but no more than any other class. We just get more crap for it cuz everyone else is older. I personally am not a bad freshman, i do what i'm supposed to do when i supposed to do it. So, sure, yell at the jerk freshmen--BUT! Don't stereotype us, and DON'T yell at the GOOD freshmen.
