>>what child is this?

Gwendolyn's head switched toward the sudden noise nearby. She'd been sitting beneath the weeping willow with Suzie, admiring the colorful blur that was her "nature garden"...and then here was that noise. A strange squeak. A half-rustle. Something thudding against a stone. There was no immediate fear.

"Hello?"

A mime. A mime came through the plants, holding a bunch of balloons and rolling a helium tank behind him. Gwen just stared. What...?

And then there was fire. Fire and heat and bright flames leaping and engulfing the cascade of wisteria nearby. Gwen gave a harried shriek and looked for the mime, who was suddenly gone. She grabbed Suzie and her blanket, running like a squealing frightened pig behind a bush. Yes, the bush would certainly protect her!

...and then the fire went out. The wisteria plant was a string of charred carbon, and the fire was gone.

...but there was a boy!

The boy just stood there, supported on spring-like vines. He looked at Gwen, nibbling a finger.

Gwen approached slowly, a look of astonishment plastered on her face.

"Darling, are you alright?"

The boy sucked a finger, feet dangling.

"Come, Darling," Gwen said, offering a hand, "Come with me."

From where she was standing, his skin almost seemed to be morphing...shifting. A strange purple twig suddenly poked out from the skin of his nose, and he flinched.

The child took Gwen's hand, and Gwen turned around to walk. There was a resonant thud. She turned and saw the child on the ground, face dirty and lower lip wobbling. His legs were bent at odd angles, entirely useless. Gwen felt a pang of empathy. She knew what it was like to be different. This boy, he needed her. He came out of her wisteria, after all.

"Come on," Gwen said, scooping the child up in her arms, "I'm so sorry. Do you have a name?"

The boy just sucked on his finger.

"How about...David?" The boy who had slain a giant with a single stone. The boy's wet eyes lit up as he smiled, and Gwen couldn't help but smile back. Suzie bleated, pleased.

>>dear diary

------The strangest thing has happened to me! Earlier today my wisteria burst into flames, shortly after I saw a strange mime in my garden! It was the oddest thing I've ever experienced. Even worse (better?), a child has come from it. Worse or better, but definitely stranger. He looks to be of Asian descent and cannot use his legs. He has wisteria vines (not flowering) all over his body, and he can stand unsteadily on them, but otherwise requires me to carry him or push him in his stroller. I don't mind, and neither does Suzie. Now we have someone to cook for, someone to care for. It has been a long time alone, and I very much look forward to some company.
------I have named the child David, and he is sleeping just beside me as I write. He had cried for nearly an hour as a persistent and thick vine prodded suddenly through his flesh. He does not seem to bleed, but I can tell that this causes him some pain. It is fairly unnerving, watching the vines wriggle beneath his skin so constantly, but one look in those bright eyes of his, and I see him for what he is; a small child in need.
------I should extinguish my light and coax Suzie to bed, as well as myself. I will have to arise early tomorrow to get breakfast ready for David, as there is very little food in the house. I hope some day that this all will be explained to me, but if not, I will simply persevere.

------David and I went for breakfast late this morning and we met a rather nice boy who seemed to be some sort of black bird. Children certainly come in odd ways in Gaia. Ah, for the days when everything was easily-explained and all of your neighbors were human! Not that I have anything against these strange people, of course. They're intriguing, if nothing else, and their personalities vary just as much as a human's. I simply must go into town more often. David shall grow up with friends, so help me!

------David is doing amazingly! His vocabulary grows with each day, and he's learning how to navigate without the use of his legs. He's also gotten more social. He seems to have taken a shine to a man we met yesterday, who I simply must call soon.
------As for now, David is playing with the xylophone we picked up in the city from a children's novelty store. I tried to teach him to play a simple tune, but he seems to prefer hitting the notes and listening to each in time rather than create a full song. It was irritating at first, but now it sounds like a chime one may put on their front porch. He just played a semi-successful harmony! I must go see.

A basket arrives just a few days short of Christmas, in the same manner as the basket that had originally arrived with the request to be filled. Many goodies are inside!

A radio control plane. It's a nicely sized plane that has tiny hinges that allow it to be opened up to put little tiny passengers in it. These little passengers are included and are about the size of a PlayMobile person. The plane is white and decorated with purple vines then painted with wisteria flowers to customize it for little David.

A giant squishable snail. To an adult this particular snail is rather large, probably the same size as their torso, so it's big and huggable and lovable for children!

These delicate wind chimes are made of painted glass and move even in the slightest breeze, they're said to have a cooling effect as well and seem to be quite soothing!

Happy holidays!

Quest time!

There's a newspaper clipping placed on top of David's paints, along with a blank card made of watercolour paper. The article talks about a boy just a bit older than David himself, getting into a car accident and is now recovering in hospital, without the use of his legs. The boy doesn't live far from David, and he may have seen him in passing before this. He apparently spent his holidays, Christmas through New Years, in an induced coma because of the pain. He's only recently been brought out of it.

As the card implies, someone (ooOOOoo the all mysterious Exi!) wants David to make this child a card showing his empathy and support, especially since he can relate to the paralysis, albeit by different means. But since there is no envelope that comes along with it, nor more than the hospital mentioned in the article, he can't send it by mail; he'll have to bring it himself.

Good luck, young Hiccup! Go and make a difference in another's life.

>>a change in me

Gwen sat in a wooden chair by the fireplace, a small table pulled up in front of her. On her lap sat David, carefully writing out the card that had been left with him. No matter what the person who had left it there had actually wanted him to do with the article, he had seen it and immediately decided that he had to meet this boy and help him. There had been a little while when David himself wasn't happy about not being able to use his legs, but now he was fine and he was sure he could help this boy get fine too. After hearing that the boy had been in a coma through the holidays (and after being told what a coma was), he begged Mommy to go out with him and buy some presents. Now all of the presents were wrapped and the card was nearly finished.

Gwen had no idea where this hospital was, or where to get to it. For this reason she walked into the city and hailed a cab, asking the driver to take her there. The three chatted about what they were doing, about the new year, about anything they could think of until they arrived at the hospital. The article had given Gwen a name to ask for at the front desk, and after filling out the visitors' papers she took a map of the hospital to find the right room.

Inside the room, the family of the boy had obviously begun a holiday celebration. There was joy and relief in the air, but a hint of sadness every time the boy had to use his arms to shift in bed. Gwen felt like an intruder, but David happily shuffled forward and handed the boy the card and two little boxes as his family watched. The boy opened the card and handed it to his mother, who read it critically. He then opened his presents; a stuffed teddy bear and a toy dump truck. His mother began to cry. Gwen began to cry. Everyone began to cry! There was much celebrating, the eating of cookies and drinking of sweet holiday beverages. Gwen and David stayed a long, long time to celebrate with the family before going home to put David to bed. Gwen tucked her little boy in, proud as punch, and pinned the little boy's phone number to her cork board.
