In my experience I have never really come acrossed a 'bad word'. Except something that was originally used to slander someone. All of the supposed swear words along some point in time weren't originally thought of as swear words but as 'peasant talk'. For instance the word 's**t' meant or course dung, poop, crap, feces. The word s**t was a term that sheep farmers would use to refer to their animal's fecal matter. The higher ups in soceity considered most anything said by anyone lower than them to be 'slanderous' or 'uncivilized'. This is where I understand the censoring of certain words came from. No body wanted to sound like a poor, dirty ol' farmer. I grew up as a poor, dirty farmer and so I will say s**t when I mean to say s**t because that is exactly what it means. This can be applied to all other 'swear' words in the history of the world. Only when it is used for a truly cruel or disrespectful purpose should a person be hushed.

Swearing is swearing.

In fact, if you are a bodhisattva on the first level or higher, you can do any of the negative actions of body or speech - but by then, you are already emanating bodies, visiting Buddhas in other realms, and so on.

Maybe so, but then what exactly is swearing but a collection of words with a certain meaning? I say these 'swear' words with their original meaning as my definition so does that make them bad? A rose is still a rose and by any other name smells just as sweet. I am simply stating my opinion and deeply respect yours.

I don't swear too much, though enough to be a nuscience (can't spell). My main problem, the vocals I have trouble controlling, are my "Jesus Christ"'s. I say them so frequently that I have trouble controlling them. I working on it, but when I get frustrated, I let them escape with a bit of creativity, setting the Christian Prophet in different settings, like toast or tapdancing.

I believe that 'cuss' words are just that. Words. I believe it is the intention behind them that matters. For example, I work at a Papa John's, so if I'm making a pizza and I mess up, "oh f**k" could be an appropriate response because it isn't directed at anyone, it was merely used to represent a mistake, but even now, I find myself less and less talking to my friends and saying "f**k you" because it doesn't show love the way I want to perceive it. That's just my opinion, but I kinda like it. The Buddha taught that karma is about intention, not about the action itself, so if there is no bad intention behind cussing and it's not directed at someone, it should generate no bad karma.

Some people have mentioned 'right speech' as a reason for not swearing. I'm not sure I agree that swearing is not right speech.

Yes, there sometimes is a less offensive way to say what we mean. However, the words we identify as "swear words" often have emotional connotations. Not once have I used the F word to mean sexual intercourse. Nor is that the only possible use of the word.

However, when I've stubbed my toe, or banged my arm into a wall, or dropped all my books, etc etc (I'm a pretty clumsy person)....there really isn't a more accurate word to describe my feelings and diffuse my anger than a good, loud, "F...!"

I guess you could say that a better way would be to let go of anger altogether, and I'm sure all of us would agree that's a great goal...but for now, a swear here and there gets me by. wink

I believe they are just harmless words if not used directly to someone or used when in an area in which it might offend. I would never just go up to someone and say, "Eff you!", or anything like that, nor would I say it to my elders or family members.

The only time I really use curse words is when I'm either upset, joking with friends, or on stage playing a part that requires me to.

Exactly! As long as it's not used to be disrespectful or to hurt someone's feelings, I don't see it as too much of a problem.

You may find it difficult to just stop all together. What you may wanna do is just cut back and gradually become used to using a lack of them. Eventually, you will find that there are many other words you can say that will fit in the situations in which you used to swear. I'm not saying replace "sh*t" with "crap" or "poop" because I find that silly and over sensitive, but possibly even using the word hell instead. I've never found that to be a cuss word. It's a (personal opinion warning!) fictional place or could even represent society today. (Some would say we live in hell. Sometimes I agree. lol)

I never did so.
I think we have to say most ppl are not smart enough, so it causes them doing some stupid things or hurt others.
We need to forgive them. e.g. can we say Japanese killed so many people during 2nd world war, we will hate them forever.
What we shoul do it trying to stop some bad things before it happens and try to advice people before they hurt others.

I'll be honest, in reality, I swear frequently. And I'll probably continue to do so.

Why?

Because words are words - it's the intent behind them that matters. I do not believe swear words are the problem. I believe people wanting to curse at things they feel unfair, people they dislike, actions they disapprove of are the problem. Changing a swear word for a more polite 'poot' or 'dang' doesn't change the intent of you using the word in the first place.

On the other hand, injecting an f-bomb into a sentence doesn't necessarily make it something of bad intent. I've used it as an underlining or word more than I have as an angry expletive - as something to exclaim just how tough something was, or how funny it was. I do admit that I have better words, but sometimes that f-bomb is just so -right-... xd

For the Rose is a Beautiful Flower
Words are sounds with certain associations attached to them.
Or in the case of written words symbols with associations.
I do swear, though not to a large degree.
I not not swear at people.
In truth I find that sometimes using a 'swear word' best gets my point across,
and the point of using language is to communicate.
I try to use the best words to get my point across.
Sometimes, but not often, this involves swearing.
Saying "That's not true" doesn't have the same impact as saying
"That's a load of BS!" which has less impact that saying:
"That's Bull s**t!"
Honestly: most of my swearing is an escaped word when I stub my toe or something biggrin
