Sadakai As ridiculous as it is, America's Next Top Model got me interested in Japan. During the Cycle 3 competition, the wanna-be models took a trip to Tokyo; I saw all of the places they visited and the ceremonies they participated in, which fascinated me. The following year, I enrolled in a Japanese class at my high school. Cycle three was my favorite. i was already obsessed with japan when i saw it. i loved the quick clips of harajuku. in one they show a close up of a cosplay of one of my favorite Japanese rock stars. i don't know if anyone is familliar with Mucc but if you happen to come across a marathon of the third cycle watch it and look for a cosplay of the vocalist. i noticed it the last time there was a marathon of it. i want to watch again to see if theres anything i would recognize now that i didn't before

I feel like I'm supposed to be there. Aaaand, before I creep anyone else out sweatdrop I guess it's also because I'm addicted to sushi :B

I'm not sure anymore why I like Japan in general, but as far as I can remember I've admired their tenacious technological skills. Just about everything I own was made in either Taiwan, China, or Japan, methinks. So I have to say, what got me interested in learning the language was a recent development in learning French. When I got the hang of speaking that I felt like I should tr to expand my language studies with other countries. So it's safe to say I'm only a novice in my learning, a beginner at best. 3nodding

I remember being interested in things that were Japanese long before I knew they were from Japan. But, the thing that made me fully aware of Japan was Pokemon. I was about ten or eleven when it first came out. Like a lot of kids at the time I became obsessed with it. Once I found out Pokemon was from Japan I looked into magazines and books and found out that a lot of things I already loved were originally from Japan. Ninjas, ramen, green tea, Sailor Moon, Megaman, Dragon Ball Z, kimonos, Nintendo, and much more. I became curious, just that.
However, my curiousity brought me to other anime other than Pokemon, DBZ, and Sailor Moon. Toonami and Yugioh caught my attention and then my interest exploded. Soon I was begging my mom to let me buy books on Japan and the Japanese language. I began studying as well. Sure, I was the cliche kid that found Japan through anime and manga, but I would never, ever call myself an otaku (for those of you that do, please don't assume it's cute. The real meaning of the word is kin to an insult).
As for now, my interests have gone into Japanese culture in general, Japanese popculture, fashion, Japanese rock music, and mythology among other things.

Hmmm I think it started when I was young when I saw a Japanese version of Sailor Moon, and I wanted to learn the language so I can understand it without having to read the subtitles. I also want to be helpful to the gaming communites with my Japanese skills.

Hm..at first I'm sad to say it was probably cause of anime (don't learn Japanese because of/from anime...learn it for a good reason) but that was only a short while. My real introduction to Japanese was Aikido (a form of self defense) that I've been doing for awhile. Though there are no Japanese people in the class some of the things we learn are in Japanese, and we learn a bit of etiquette (mostly just for the dojo but some universal stuff like bowing and taking off your shoes and stuff).
Then, after the 1 week learn-japanese-from-anime obsession left, I got very very interested in the culture and the language, and that sorta just started my real study of it. I love how Japanese sounds- it just like rolls off the tongue (if you dont stammer lol)

Ya know, I really don't know what got me interested in Japan eek I remember when I was a little kid I made this character named Masaki, which I later found out was a Japanese name. Also, I always liked the word Ryuu... I kinda based Ukryu off of it. I made up the name Ukryu when I was like, 10 and I didn't know a thing about Japan. The final straw that made me decide to study Japanese was when I heard my first Japanese song. ^_^
Anime wasn't a factor for me because I don't watch it illegally on youtube, lol. I actually watch it on TV like all the good law-abiding people do... stare

At first, it was the jealousy that most games originate in Japan or are only released there. Later on, Anime helped influence that. In 8th grade, I decided to go to a High school where they teach Japanese, and luckily, I got accepted. I'm in my second year of studying the language, and the more I learn the more I'm interested in Japan. whee

Mainly the anime from when I was a kid, also finding out in my childhood that the games that I like were actually made in Japan instead of China.

Indirectly, it would probably be the anime and manga.
Though what really got me into the language was in the 4th grade when my mom enrolled me in a Japanese summer school class. However, it took me until the 8th grade before I started really diving in the language, copying words from some online dictionary and putting them in the front of my binder. To organize my studying year-by-year:
8th grade: Learned kana stroke orders and Hiragana (I learned Katakana first due to the dictionary copying) 9th grade: Learned kanji and a little bit of how kanji works (radicals, stroke order, etc.) and a little bit of grammar here and there. 10th grade: Learned more kanji, still copying off dictionaries. 11th grade: I had an epiphany here. Thanks to AJATT, Tae Kim's blog, and Feed Me Japanese, I now have a changed view of learning the language. So far, I'm currently grabbing language by the horns and learning whatever I can.
