"I don't," Julien said, shaking his head as he ate, his eyes flicking between Kurios and Kashya as each of them spoke. "But I'm sure we can find a torch?" he asked, his voice slowing just a bit at the word.
"They're using another word for a flashlight," Mireille cut in, smiling at Julien. "I should have one in my room that you can use."
"Right," Julien said, nodding and looking back at them. "Torch sounds better anyway," he added with a grin. "So you can both teach me, right?" he added.
Mireille continued to eat, staying mostly quiet as she watched Julien interact with the pair. If she noticed the way Kashya's eyes had lit on her and then looked away, she gave no sign of it.

A nod was Kashya’s simple reply as she contemplated. She could probably explain it to him right then at the table because it was so simple in design, but actions where always much easier to interpret and understand. She crossed her knife and fork over the plate to show she was done and finished off her drink. She hadn’t been able to come remotely close to finishing off the lovely breakfast, and she remembered to apologise to Julien later for not being able to. Maybe she could finish it for lunch, as opposed to Julien making a new one. It seemed such a waste. But all the same, she wanted to start the game as soon as possible. “If you round up the flashlight-“ She flexed out the new word on her tongue “- we can go out after dinner and Kurios and I can demonstrate,”
“Well I’m a willing participant in the game!” Kurios exclaimed, delighted to be involved, and given the chance so openly to watch Julien like a hawk. “Will Mireille be so eager as to join?” he questioned, stretching the conversation out to her at long last.

As Julien reached to take Kashya's plate to the counter, Mireille hesitated, looking from Kurios to Kashya hesitantly, as though trying to get some clue how the little girl really felt about the whole idea. Finally, however, she gave an awkward laugh. "I'm no good at games," she shrugged, feeling embarrassed despite the fact that it was an excuse. "I think I'll sit this one out, if that's okay?"
"Are you sure, Mireille?" Julien frowned, looking over at her. "I thought..."
"I'm sure," Mireille cut in before Julien could continue. "I'll just go get the flashlight for you so the three of you can play."
"...Okay," Julien murmured, frowning at her as she left the table.

The looks of distressed seemed to ripple out from Julien’s face, and over to Kurios’s to eventually land on Kashya’s. She had enough sence in her at least to pick something up, but she wasn’t sure of its cause. She hoped it had not been by Kashya’s doing, and she edged her way over to Kurios, feeling the subconscious support that being near her guardian offered. “Do you still want to play when she returns?” Kashya asked cautiously to Julien
Kurios couldn’t help feeling a little guilty, here he was about to run off to play chase, or more like keep away for him at least, and Mireille wasn’t feeling the slight bit of interest. He pondered on the thought of staying in with her, or at the very least, sitting out after the three of them had swapped being ‘it’ for a few turns each. Perhaps she needed to think on something, or maybe she simply wanted to catch up on some work. Being a writer and all, he couldn’t imagine the sort of deadlines she had. He wanted to follow her and ask, but felt it not his place.

Julien blinked after Mireille for a few moments, but the cautious note in Kashya's voice drew his attention back to her, and he smiled gently. "Absolutely, I do. Mir's probably got work she needs to do or something," he added for the others' benefit. Mireille did tend to let him entertain his guests without her, by and large, so perhaps that was it... "What about you? You seem a little worried?" he noted.
Returning with the flashlight, Mireille held it out to Kurios with a quiet smile. "I'll see about joining in the next time, perhaps," she suggested, then grinned. "Why don't you go now? I'll take care of the dishes for you."

“Only for her,” Kashya said quietly as the feet of a returning Mireille began to patter back towards the trio. Curios eyes peered at her briefly, as she conversed with Kurios.
“I’ll make sure to hold you to that,” Kurios said, imitating Mireille’s short smile. Though it spread wider at the mention of getting out of doing dishes, the idea of a night off from that chore held something comforting in it. Kurios took the torch from Mireille, thanking her politely, and took a smooth clutch on Kashya’s fingers. “Lead the way to the door,” He directed at Julien.

Julien nodded, giving Mireille a brief hug before he moved to lead them out to the deck, pausing only briefly to flick on the lights. "So?" he asked when they were all outside, turning to face them both. "What do we do?"

In the few hours in the house, the rain had defiantly let off. The grass was damp, but not overly so, thus making it slightly too dangerous for tag, but fine for spotlight. This was as much a game for hiding, as it was running.
Kurios took the torch in both hands now, searching for the small press which would start up the tube like light. It was just to the right of his thumb, closer to the front surface, and lying on the neck of the light. He clicked it on, careful not to blind anyone, and flashed it out into the back yard. It went for quite a few meters, before fading into black. “So, the game’s kind of like this,” He began, swinging the torch left and right. “It’s similar in how ‘tag’ is played. One person is dubbed ‘it’ and their job is to search out other players. Once ‘It’ has found another player, their job is to shine the torchlight on them, thus making them become the new “It”. You don’t become ‘It’ until the light is physically shone on you, but if it’s simply in chase, you can duck behind things to escape. ‘Poison’ is the house here. If a player touches ‘poison’ and shouts it out, ‘It’ can’t tag them for another ten seconds. No on again, off again on that either. Unless in pursuit, ‘It’ can’t come within a metre of ‘Posion’,” Kurios at last caught the torch this time, showing he was done, he looked at his ‘pupils’ expectantly. “Questions?”
Kashya shook her head, she’d all ready herd the rules before, even the ones Kurios hadn’t mention tonight. Such as that tagging a hurt player wasn’t allowed, and that the game took a time out if someone was injured. Obviously Kurios didn’t expect anyone to get hurt tonight.
“I propose Julien be ‘It’ first,” he concluded smoothly. “Kashya and I also get a thirty second start off,”

"I have a couple, actually, Julien said, before Kurios could move away. "Are there any rules about talking? And what happens if someone gets really lost?" While the two of them seemed calm enough, Julien knew it was their first time to Mireille's house, and the back yard could be pretty sizeable, without a fence to keep them hemmed in. Maybe he should look at seeing what sort of work would be involved to put in a fence, he thought distantly, if they were going to have others over more often...

Kurios hadn’t thought about such questions, and he felt a sense of gratitude to Julien for thinking them up before the game began. “Talking is fine between all players, including ‘It’. But it’s not a fantastic idea to do if ‘It’ is a few meters away and you’re hiding,” He grinned. “As for getting lost...” he hadn’t given much planning into that. “If Mir’s house can be seen from everywhere in the yard, I suppose ‘poison’ shall also be the meeting ground if we get lost. But I don’t know how we can signal that to each other if it happens,”

Julien nodded, looking out at the yard carefully. "We don't have a fence blocking our yard off or anything, so if either of you start to feel lost, just stay put where you are if you can't see the house, okay?" Though Julien was fairly certain Kurios already knew such ideas, he didn't want to make it look like he was singling Kashya out, so he addressed them both. "Don't be afraid to yell out where you are if you're lost, either. I'll be able to find you better if I can hear you." Looking over at Kashya, he offered a warm smile. "I like knowing plans like this are in place before games begin. It helps to prevent danger."

Kashya was glad to have Julien taking care of all the proper precautios, between Kurios and him, a grazed knee might be the only bad omen of the game. Her feet where jittering with anxiety to run about, the cooling winds which the rain had left behind still trailed, sending a bite of thrill up her spine. There was nothing better than a new game, with new friends to excite, and the unknown area only added more mysterys to be discovered. She wondered what terrain she might find out in the yard.
Kurios muttered a thanks, before looking out over the yard briefly. It was large, but a loud call would probably echo enough to alert someone, even if the was as damp as it was. “If it starts raining again, everyone comes back here,” he added, eyes the clouds which, while on the opposite sound of the house now, could turn back if they wanted.

"All right," Julien said, "thirty seconds. Should I look away?" he asked, just before they were ready to run off, not wanting to cheat by accident on his first go 'round. With a grin, he readied himself, feeling the heft of the flashlight as he waited for things to begin.

“That’s how we play,” Kurios confirmed. He waited for Julien to turn around and face towards the house. “Okay, ready? Start counting,” Kurios gave Kashya a smile and motioned in a particular direction of the yard to show that they should go the same way. Kashya nodded, but didn’t meet his eyes. Odd behaviour for her but she was staring at the yard also, so perhaps she was just thinking something else. Kurios gave Julien one last check to make sure he wasn’t looking, and then gave Kashya nod to mean they could run now.
Kashya sprinted off with Kurios as Julien began to become smaller and smaller as they began hiding away from him. What Kurios was not expecting, was when his daughter ran off from him, ducking inside a small space that Kurios could not follow her. He saw her come out the other side, but didn’t know how to get there himself. Guess they were separating.
Kurios must have been dreaming if he thought she would stay with him. He made too much noise and would give her away just too easily, she had been searching the grounds for something just like the crawl space she ducked into, and was glad there was one. She was happy to be able to run around in the dark, while still knowing people where just a call away. She skipped playfully between trees, dancing with the grass that rushed under her feet.

Julien counted slowly to thirty, ears pricked to listen for both of them, though after a few moments, he could only hear one, and then only distantly, without any real clues for him to go on. When he reached thirty, he turned, flicking the light on and shining it slowly over the yard, silent as he waited to hear any clues that might be offered. What had seemed fun when explained to him took on a vaguely more sinister note when the light failed to illuminate anything on the first few passes over the yard, and he padded down out into the grass, moving carefully.
But if they got lost, he knew the area, he told himself, pausing to turn and shine the light under the deck. It picked up a pair of coon's eyes for a moment, and then the raccoon skittered away. This game was not his forté...
