Fleur's ears drooped back into his hair before he could stop them. He doubted the real reason was what Kuyoja wanted to hear, but maybe honesty really was the best policy. "D-Corp makes me," he admitted. "...and Bah wants me to too...I got beat up by shark from here when I was little. I hadn't gotten the hang of spraying yet, so I couldn't make him go away." He thought, perhaps, the previous class would have been enough to make Stevie leave him alone about learning combat, but since he blacked out in the middle of it and did not remember much of the lesson, Bah said it didn't count.

The skunk explained all of this to his teacher, keeping his gaze on the ground from a combination of embarrassment and shame. "I'm sorry - I'll quit zoning. I don't like fighting, but I...would like to be able to get away if I ever run into him again..."

Kuyoja looked down at the child taking in the information, so he had been bullied as a child that would explain a lot of things. He reached a hand forward placing it on the skunks head a small gesture showing the kid it was okay. He then slipped his hand away before coughing slightly.

"Well then, let us make the best of it shall we? If you have been bullied, we need to find ways of avoiding it now won't we? How about we shift the direction of this class. We will learn about self defense instead." He said with a nod of his head.

"Now I am sure you will enjoy the first part of it. Learning self defense is mostly about learning how to prevent a hostile situation from starting rather than a full out brawl." He explained.

Fleur nodded quietly as he listened. Defense sounded better - defense he could stand to learn, and his attention noticeably improved once the topic had shifted. "I don't remember much of what happened," he offered. "I just remember being told he beat me up. Mostly, I just try to be polite and not get on anybody's bad side to begin with." He was at least mature enough to understand that such a method was not fool-proof, however. Some people took offense to everything.

Kuyoja nodded his head before turning to face his student again. He must of been pretty young when he had been beaten up. He wondered if it had been another student, perhaps one he had taught before...the idea worried him. He didn't wish to promote violence...despite teaching melee.

"Being polite helps, but some people are just looking for any excuse to start a fight." He murmured his thoughts drifting to a certain cobra and mantis he had taught before.

"The first thing you need to learn about self defense is being sure of yourself. If you appear meak, you appear easy to take advantage of. Even if you do not feel brave as long as that doesn't come across most bullies don't have the energy to take on someone as strong as they are. Mostly you need to have the illusion of being strong."

Therein, apparently, lay the problem. Fleur was always very nervous around new people, and he knew it showed. Partly, it was the way Stevie raised him, keeping him, more or less, in her mansion during his younger stages. He loved it there and adored his caretaker, but he suffered greatly in being socialized. Partly, also, it was his DNA's fault - skunks are naturally somewhat shy animals and prefer to avoid confrontations, spraying as a last resort.

"I don't know how to do that though," he finally admitted.

Kuyoja looked down at Fleur his brain working around the fact that Fleur was obviously lacking quite a bit of self confidence. He faced his student fully looking down a him all the while.

"First you need to believe you can be brave in the face of such situtaions. You need to tell them plainly to leave you alone. Of course this wouldn't deture the most dedicated bully but the general riff raff won't want to bother with someone who isn't fun to bother. " He explained in a softer tone.

"You need to raise your voice, not in fear or anger but plainly showing you arn't afriad of them. You won't tolerate them bothering you. Tell me...do you carry around anything ? Keys? Or something like that?" He inquired suddenly.

Fleur was nodding to show he understood what he was being told, but the last question threw him off, and he flipped one ear in confusion as he answered, "Um...I keep my perfume bottle in my bag. And I've got a few keycards for Bah's lab since I have to take her food sometimes since she forgets to eat." He tilted his head, ears twitching again. "I can buy some keys if I need them." Yet another excuse to go shopping! This class wasn't so bad after all.
PostPosted: Thu Oct 02, 2008 8:51 am

The main reason he had asked if he had a set of keys was becuase they became a person's most vaulable weapon for self defense. Small always on hand (well usually in a purse or pocket) and they hurt when struck against a person. Plus it wasn't a real weapon.

"The reason I ask is because a set of keys can become an unvaulable tool to protect yourself. If you are walking alone anywhere, for example to your car or between classes or on the walk home having your keys in hand could very well save your life. Being metal striking out with a set of keys can be very painful. " Moving he went to jot down on a peice of paper a few items he thought could be useful to the skunk.

"Here is a list of things you may want to get. They could prove useful to you in the futre." The list included, flashlight, stun gun, pepper spray and a cell phone.

"The phone of course to to contact someone if you find yourself hurt." He explained though the more he thought on it he realized that most of the children here had dragons...any one stupid enought to bully a child who had a oversized gaurd dog.. but then again he had to keep in mind that not all the children from this facility were...'good'.

Fleur nodded as he processed each bit of information, perking up noticeably. Regardless of his previous experiences, skunks were naturally geared to be more on the defensive, so learning defensive strategies was much better than learning how to hurt someone else. He already had a cell phone and a flashlight, the flashlight because of his poor nighttime eyesight due to his DNA. He could easily find the other items given a thorough day of shopping - Stevie might even be able to make him the stun gun herself.

"Okay - thank you." He looked back up to Kuyoja. "I'm going to have to learn offense anyway sometime though, aren't I?" It was not an ideal thought, of course, but he was mature enough to know he couldn't keep getting out of it forever.

Kuyoja noddedh is head although he looked a bit sympahtetic for the skunk boy's position.

"You can only run away for so long before the problem will corner you. It is best to learn a way to defend yourself. And in the end you will probably end up hurting someone. " He explained in a low tone as he then turned to go collect his note book. He joted a few nots down before continuing.

"Shall we proceed to defensive techniques then?"

Fleur nodded in understanding - that made sense to him. "Yes, sir." He perked up slightly, his tail curling comfortably at his back. "Yes, I'm ready now."

Kuyoja nodded his head before turning to Fleur, he then raised his hand and arms up close to his body.

"You do this to try and sheild yourself. You will mostly be learning blocking techniques, how to 'roll' or 'deflect' attacks aimed at yourself." He explained as he indicated that he wanted Fleur to immitate his position.

"I am going to do a straight forward punch towards you, I will do it slowly and I want you to try and best figure how to roll it away from yourself. Okay?"

"Okay." Fleur nodded after mimicking the blocking technique shown to him. He shifted slightly where he stood to ready himself, not quite sure what he was going to do, but he figured this is probably one of those "learn-as-you-go" things - Kuyoja would tell him if he was doing it wrong.

Nodding his head the man then went to 'punch' the boy, it was a straight shot. For the chest. He went slowly, much too slow for anyone to NOT be able to block it. He was watching to see how Fleur reacted with a block. His movements, body language as well the block itself. To see how he could help him improve .

Quickly, Fleur did as he was previously instructed - he balled his hands into fists and held his arms up and together tightly in front of his chest. He wasn't certain if he did it right, but he knew he would be told if he didn't.
