Ah - well he was being pretty demanding in his quest for knowledge that he'd failed to take into consideration that she might not know every answer to his questions. The stallion was sure she didn't have to deal with this kind of drilling for the truth everyday; most around here would have been taught these subjects as a child. Nodding his head in understanding, he took it that he might just have to try and figuratively listen to his heart and see if it still had anything to say to him after all of the years of forced silence.
Maria....no. He wouldn't forget her. He could see her in the land, in the faces of happy individuals...he was starting to see her in Abattie too. It was strange that the golden mare kind resembled the blonde haired girl of his past.
Yet what was really something to Shadow was her smile; a smile that genuine could only mean that Abattie was happy - a nice change from when he'd first approached her. That was really resulting from him, this talk, this companionship? Would she keep smiling after they parted ways, or would it dissapear and her previous demeanor return? He didn't enjoy thinking of such a possibility, nightfall wasn't too far off as the sun drifted downwards towards the distant mountians...what then?
"Its...nice to hear that I can be the cause of something positive in someone, its been a while since i've heard something like that..." He admitted, but soon after shook his head solemnly. "No, I don't know how. If it is so natural, im curious why it isn't nature for me to cry as of yet. Perhaps someday....but I will heed your advice on mourning for now."
Thinking seemed much more easier than crying anyways at this time.
Purpose. Freedom....the two seemed to almost contradict one another as Shadow and Abattie seemed to be doing in conversation thus far, both abstracts could be one in the same as long as some aspects gave way to the other. Finding a balance of the two was key if he was going to be content living here in these lands.
"Do you not get tired of waiting? I find myself slowly becoming irrate with the lack of drive or purpose to pass the day to day time..." He didn't want his missions the Doctor had him going on, no no...but between trying to figure out how to accomplish his promise to Maria and the hours of the day...well, he was left with a lot of free time on his hooves.
Parents...
What would it be like to know someone unconditionally loved you, just for who you were since you were a part of them. It was a reality he knew he'd never know, no matter how much he may have wanted to life the experience.
"Hormones aside..." He began, tilting his head up to the skies in a bit of a forlorn air around him. "Was that how it happened when you met your parents for the first time? Were you nervous....with butterflies? Did you feel the spark and connection, knowing that they gave you life?" There were no sparks between him and the team of scientists who gave him life. They had been doing their job, and had no real emotions towards him other than excitement for their success living past infancy and sense of security that he could do what he was made for.
It was all buisness, really.
All seriousness flew out the window for a moment as he jumpedl whipping his head to the side to take in her outburst of laughter. What the hell was so funny? Giving her a look as if she'd grown an extra head, the dark stallion snorted bewilderedly. "I really don't see what's so amusing...you make it sound like crushes are a good thing and now you laugh..." Oh wait...
Love intrest? Was this what it was all about?
In all honesty he'd just met the mare, he knew it probably wasn't intentional but the whole concept of love was just far too limited in his understanding of it to really be actively, well....interested in it. He had seen that mares were different, moreso actively open about hunting for a mate or the likes; so he really couldn't blame or feel awkwarded by Abattie since well....she was a mare herself. Shadow supposed he would have to get used to it all like he was getting used to not being given order after order. It just took time.
Fortunately 'Attie was very good at being an emotional mentor to him that a lot of the small things going on didn't phase him like they might have should.
"I see....well then. It might not be a crush, yet what im feeling is more than just a tolerance towards you." Shadow couldn't help it, his lips curving upwards in the faintest of smiles...but a smile none the less. Of course it was gone in the blink of an eye as it just felt too weird to be smiling.
Did Attie have a crush? It didn't sound like it, so Shadow decided to just plain not ask. Instead putting it under the category of best not to ask a mare; which the list seemed to be getting bigger and bigger by the day.
As Attie seemed to become very flustered, Shadow was a bit pleased that his little experiement had worked. Word and touch could bring on the 'butterflies' and he was even fortunate to learn there was a variation on size of them too! Of course he didn't let on about this personal victory, as even he knew some things were better kept in private of his own thoughts; much like some of the other things he'd felt upon learning more of the mare. All of this talk about liking, crushes, affection and love seemed personal to the hedgehog hybrid; and even he had things to keep a secret and not give out even in the persuit of knowledge.
Continuing down the path as they strolled, he began to realize by the slight soreness of his throat that he'd talked an awful lot. Probably moreso today than the combination of his entire time being here, and most of which were nothing but questions and observations!
"I think I have asked enough questions today...I don't remember ever talking so much to make my throat sore.." He pondered aloud, casting a sideways glance to the golden mare. "Did you have anything to say....to ask? Im not sure what I could tell you of intrest but im sure there has to be something; i'll try to answer them like you've so kindly done for me."

The smile that she wore while the talk continued would surely leave once the one who placed it there left. And she knew that this would happen, the thought lingered in her mind from the very second her lips were able to form upwards. It was almost unfair that she could act so happy now, if front of Shadow, but then have to take it all back. Couldn't she just be happy for real once again? Couldn't her heart find a reason to smile without faking anymore?
Perhaps she'd ask him to stay with her, once the night dragged on and it would be time to rest. It wouldn't be a problem, for two acquaintances to share a sleeping space, now would it? Not as though she'd put on the charm and try to seduce him, this meeting was all too precious to ruin it like that. Besides, a stallion like himself didn't seem like the type to turn down a chance to help someone out.
"I'm glad to be the only one in a long time then. Makes me feel rather special." She joked, wondering how far they could go before he brought up the fact it was getting later and later by the minute. She wouldn't be the one to spoil this moment, so he'd definitely be the one to part ways...but she'd ask him...she'd ask him to stay. One night....at least just one night...
"Maybe because you haven't had anything happen to you worth crying over, in your book. Your Maria's passing was horrid, but you did not know of the possibility of tears, now that you do, it may be different."
Thinking was much easier, but also brought more consequences. Much, much more consequences if all one did was think.
"Oh, I get tired, very tired. And very impatient, but I think I've learned that waiting for something so important is almost worth it, since the outcome is so great. As for passing the day, do something out of your norm for once...it'll both amuse you, and suck up half the day." Free time was, although slightly annoying, something very valuable as it proved that life didn't have to be about one specific thing...
Having someone unconditionally love you for you was simply the greatest feeling ever, but it was one that she wished she never had. There was that saying, it was better to have loved and lost, then never to have loved at all, but then...one wouldn't have to experience the pain that came with loosing a loved one. Her Mama disappeared...and she couldn't get over it...if she never had a Mama, wouldn't it be easier to handle?
"Oh, in a different context, yes. But I suppose I was too young to understand what that feeling meant. And I don't know from personal experience mind you, but it goes for parents too. Seeing your child for the first time could probably give you butterflies." Attie wished she could help him learn all of this, and experience it for himself on a whole different level then just words coming out of her mouth, but she knew what that would entail. She'd need to find someone to love him, or for him to love...and well, it was just way to difficult to do within such a short amount of time.
Although, Grandmama, as Papa said, had more love to share than anyone deserved, so maybe she could help him better understand it?!?! It would be too much to go on an adventure to find her though....scratch that idea...
Oh, if only he could see his face! She laughed even harder that time, but quickly regained herself...this was no time! She already deemed herself a fool, no need to dig the hole deeper! "Crushes are good it's just...a lot more complicated then that."
And she had just met him. On normal circumstances, as most stallions knew what love came with, and what a crazy mare came with, she would have already flung herself at him, asking....no, begging to be loved for just one night....but he was different. Not like any other stallion before, and so she couldn't bring herself to do something so horrid.
Ah, it seemed so foreign to not flirt, but heck...it was a nice change.
"Friendship, then. Or...a friendly acquaintance." It was too quick to notice the smile appear on his face, but she had given him one all the same. One, glad he hadn't pushed the subject of a crush any further than it needed to go, and two...she did like him, but NOT in that way. He was interesting, he was incredibly polite, different...handsome, so the possibility of a friendship made her happy.
"I don't remember talking so much either, but I do talk a lot...." She grinned, wondering what a soar throat felt like. It had been her nature since birth to be a chatterbox, so something so common and simple as a sore throat was strange to her. "Hmm, well that leaves a lot of open opportunities...but in all honesty, I want to know more about your Maria. Tell me what she was like before she passed."
It seemed like a fitting topic-changer, and she truly was curious...a two legger than a soquili could take so much interest in was rare...even the soquili around here weren't overly fond of most of them.

"You are special..." He blurted out, almost interrupting her before a confused look quickly drew across his features. Sudden outbursts like that were pretty rare for the dark stallion since his composeur usually prevailed. Strange, yet he wanted her to know she was special and he wasn't just kidding around with his words. She was unique, a mare all her own unlike the rest he'd encountered. Perhaps that was why he still hadn't taken his leave from her company just yet, a part of him was enjoying not to be alone. He enjoyed learning all she had to tell him since most mares would have already tried to make the goofy faces at him, but Abattie hadn't done anything like that.
"And from what you've told me....I see that something so special is worth waiting for if the rewards are that high. That if love is that rewarding...perhaps it is best to wait till you find the special someone you're looking for. Otherwise....the wait will have seemed in vain if someone just settled for any old individual...right?"
Casting his gaze to her, he wondered if that was what she was waiting for. Why she didn't have anyone yet. Perhaps she was waiting for that soul mate that the soquili seem so fond in finding in their lives. From what he had gathered, it was someone who was made to be with you....that reminded him.
"About the topic of special...what do you know about soul mates? That whole being made for one another prospect. Is it true? Can one really find this individual?" Looking up to the darkening skies, the soft oranges and pinks filtering across the mountiantops and the ruby tinged clouds lazily drifting was quite a sight. It gave him a different feeling rather than looking out to the glittering glass and dark concrete of the city at sunset. "How would you even know when you found them...."
Well, at least Shadow didn't need to worry about soul mates and all that. He wasn't really created by the divinities above, he was created in a lab and therefore wasn't made for anyone but the purposes of the doctor. Of course now it wasn't the case...but still, he wasn't made with the purpose of being with someone in the end so he was positive that he was just a singular in the world of soul mates.
"Not that it counts towards me, but interesting to know none the less."
So, Parents also felt such feelings towards offspring? Perhaps it too would be impossible for him to feel it in that context too. Not that he was craving it, but he wasn't even sure if he was able to reproduce, he'd never really given it a lot of thought till seeing the foals littering the lands here. There was just so many unanswered questions about being created that he wasn't quite sure what he was capable of unless it was told to him his abilities. "I don't think i'll have to worry about that either.." He said mostly to himself, tossing his gaze to the path before him.
Besides, imagine the disaster that would happen if he couldn't give a mare the foals she desired?
As they neared the woods, entering into the shaded path; Shadow knew there was a small lake up ahead. It wasn't the first time he'd spent an eve here, it was a pleasant little location with a few thickets to remain hidden from the greater evils of the land. Not to mention it was close to the resources he'd need to survive.
"Maria..." He whispered lightly, closing his eyes for a moment as her face appeared in his mind's eye. "Very well, as you wish."
"Maria was a little human, a child to speak. I believe she said her age was fourteen which is still young in human lifespands. I would see her around the laboratories and she always had a smile on her face, and was a very kind soul. I didn't meet her till I came back from one of my first missions, I barely was able to accomplish my goal and was pretty badly hurt. I had passed out and when I woke up it was her that was nursing me back to health since the doctors were too interested in the extent of my injuries instead of treating them. It was the first time i'd seen someone cry, and after that she was with me all the time whenever I was at the base."
Stopping at the water's edge in the clearing as the skies began to sink into shades of navy and black; Shadow lowered his head to drink calmly from the cool water's surface. The liquid felt heavenly against his parched throat and after clearing it with a unaudiable grunt he continued on; his ruby orbs taking on a slight glow in the dark.
"She was the granddaughter of the head scientist who created me....Gerald Robotnik. I was told once that they were trying to create an ultimate life form....but Maria told me that he was really trying to create that life form in order to cure an illness she had. It wasn't sucessful, and from what I understood the corperation which funded their experiments changed my directive. The doctors could have said no...but being a weapon was better than failure. None the less, I think all along Maria was just as caged as I was....which was why she wanted me to be free since she knew that she could never be thanks to her disease. Her untimely death thanks to those scum was still unforgivable, even if she was ill. Maria was full of life, it was plain to see even for someone like me."
A soft sigh escaped his lips, like they had spoken earlier, what was done was done. She wouldn't be coming back, but her memory lived on and that what was important right?
"Its getting late though....isn't anyone waiting for you?" Surely someone would be wondering where she was, he didn't desire any hostilities for keeping her out past dark. "If you need an escort back home, I would be more than willing to take you..."

Oh!
She giggled almost obnoxiously at his little slip up. Was that something she was supposed to be taking seriously? The compliment as it seemed to be, sounded quite humorous. The look on his face told her that he hadn't meant for it to come out, the poor thing, but it had anyways. Darn emotions getting the best of him? Ah well, he MEANT it, in the least romantic and sexual way possible and that's what mattered. He was kind....which was rare. "Thank you Shadow, you're special too."
But her giggles wouldn't subside. It was just too funny.
"Yes I suppose." Hmm, perhaps she should have gone deeper into her inner thought and figured this out all on her own beforehand? It would have been so much easier to deal with past pain if she lived by what she just told him. And now, she couldn't help but feel horrible. There she was, telling this stallion that love was worth it, and only true love came to those least expecting it and being patient and all her life...she was the opposite. "I mean yes. If someone settled for just anyone, then they come off...desperate. Said someone would not really be in love."
Ha, if only he knew. She had basically told him the truth, but in her mind it had always been lies. She was the mare that everyone didn't want to be, the crazy one looking for anyone who would take her. But perhaps that's why she stayed alone....perhaps the heavens were giving her a sign, but she had to realize that sign on her own? Her soul mate would come eventually, but she needed to stop looking.
Yes, that made sense. Now.
"I wouldn't know first hand, but yes I believe that it's true. Everyone is born, or created for this world for someone else. And I also believe it's just that one...there will never be two. And as far as knowing....I cannot tell you that." Attie paused, her gaze following his own toward the mountains. Such an amazing sight, she was glad to be sharing it with him. "But I can give you an example. My Papa is kind of....well, snarky. He hates soquili not related to him. And during the time he met my Mama, he was depressed, he believed the world was utterly pointless. But they met, nonetheless and he fell in love. Although he wouldn't let himself love her, he didn't want to hurt her, so he stayed away. But she loved him, and wouldn't let him go...and finally, he gave in. Their love was too strong...it withstood all his former accusations on life."
Not the best example in the world, but it would do. Bairn and Astia were total soul mates, seeing as she would be the only mare he'd ever love outside his sisters, mothers and daughters. He even vowed to that statement. He didn't want to be with her, but he was.
"Not that it counts toward you? What do you mean? Ever creature has a soul mate, regardless of whence they came! If you have a heart, a soul and a mind, then you're capable of love. A lion can fall for a lamb, regardless of how ridiculous that sounds, it's possible. If cupid's arrow should led them together, then it was meant to be."
Attie simply didn't understand the concept for creation by a machine. Heck, she didn't even know what a machine was....nor what a scientist two-legger was capable of. But if she had understood, she probably wouldn't have a charge of heart. It stood firmly in her mind that no matter the origin, as long as one breathed, they were capable of anything. Just not...herself. She lacked total and complete confidence in herself....
"If your creator gave you the body of a stallion, I'm sure he gave you...other possibilities." She giggled loudly, amused that such a thought would occur. But it was possible, right?
A tiny ping pulled her heart as he spoke again, and the mare instantly regretted asking him to speak of his beloved friend. She had passed, and she was being utterly careless of his feelings! Or rather...lack of them, but still...it wasn't polite. Oops.
"She sounds like she was a sweet little thing. It was horrible that she was so young." Attie wanted to cry, in fact, a tear rolled down her cheek as she put herself in his situation....and imagined someone caring for her that much and then leaving her forever. It just wasn't fair. "But she was put on this earth to save you, and she did. She accomplished so much in so little time.
"You were created to cure an illness?" She said that question with confusion and curiosity, mainly still because the concept of creation just didn't phase her. Intimate moments happened and babies were born...that's what she knew. "I...don't know what to say...I...what they did was horrible, but it was not their fault. I take it they've never seen a unicorn before? Simply take a unicorn's powers and her illness would have disappeared...two-leggers are not that advanced. They should have given her the life she wanted....I'm so sorry for the way they treated her...but you're free and that's what matters now."
Attie was glad that someone like Shadow ripped away from the life he led. He needed a push though, like everyone else, and unfortunately that push was death...
"Me? Someone waiting for me? Oh, don't be silly. I've lived alone for so long." The mare sighed, but then she realized this was the moment she had wanted to come, she couldn't let this pass up! "Perhaps not an escort, but company? It's been so long since I've spent the night with someone..."
She paused, this time, a blush appeared on her once calm face. Oh dear! "Would you care to spend the night with me?"

Everyone...had someone.
Her story of her father, even in times of personal crisis had found his soul mate when he wasn't even being his true self. That was pretty hopeful sounding in terms of just about anyone could find that someone in due time. Perhaps even someone like he could be so fortunate enough, that would surely make the mare happy to have found a soulmate...and he would be content in fufilling his promise to Maria.
"That is pretty inspiring; about your father Abattie. Its....well, nice to hear."
Even if she didn't understand the means of his creation, perhaps it was for the better anyways. No one here would ever be able to fathom what he'd gone through, and it was something he didn't wish on anyone else. Those who roamed this land had a natural freedom that perhaps even they didn't understand on just how fortunate they were. Even with the darkness of skinwalkers and Kalona roaming the land it was all apart of the great plan of life, instead of the selfish desires of men.
Coughing abruptly at her giggles, his own eyes adverted perhaps a little too quickly. Such adulterous context really hadn't entered his mind and he'd perhaps like to keep it that way. Other stallions were perhaps equipt with this natural instinct to well....do what they do to make foals; yet Shadow wasn't sure if he too shared such an instinct and wasn't willing to find out any time soon.
"She was..." Innocent Maria; the world was certianly a little darker over there since she'd vanished.
"There are no unicorns where I come from...there are only horses somewhat like you. They are only natural coloured, like brown and black and white and such. Im not sure how there are so many different species here....but two leggers have never even seen anything like you; let alone a unicorn. That is why I assume they had to try and come up with alternate means to get what they need seeing there is no mystical powers."
Surely if there were Unicorns, perhaps he would have never been created.
Oh, well that was really too bad. He guessed it was pretty common for adult soquili to live on their own; but he assumed there would have perhaps been someone waiting for her? A friend....someone.
"Company...." He echoed, wasn't that really what he'd been wondering about, curious to how having a companion felt? Well, someone of his own species anyways.
"Spend the night?"
Oh, she required company overnight...perhaps protection too. It really didn't seem safe for anyone unexperienced in battle to be alone with what he'd seen lurking in the shadows. Although he did notice her blush, his mind didn't even register that perhaps such a request could have been seen in another obvious way.
Then again, it was Shadow; afterall.
"If that is what would make you happy, Abattie....I have no qualms in spending the evening with you. Two bodies is a greater deterrent to any attacks anyways. Is there any place which you regular to slumber, or will we be finding a place?"
Turning his body towards the path ahead, he dipped his head slightly in allowing her to take the lead as the lady....it was only the gentlemanly thing to do.

"I'm glad that story was able to please you. My Papa is my idol so I appreciate someone who appreciates his life story." She smiled an innocent smile, thoughts mainly on the stallion who helped give her life. The most important creature in the world-the one who she truly cared about...even more than the rest of her family. Bairn was always there for her, even when he wasn't physically there, his words flowed through her mind like he knew what she was doing.....
Abattie, stop. You know better than that.
Or...
It's okay darling, you're too young for someone like him anyways....
Ah, yes. Her Papa meant more to her than finding that special someone. And even though it bugged her that he constantly protested to her 'ways', she hardly found herself able to disobey.
Only in secret was she the Abattie that she truly was...and not the mare she was currently showing Shadow.
It was indeed true that no one in their rights minds in these lands would even begin to fathom what the dark stallion went through....but at least the golden mare was trying. But her flaw in her view point was....it was all mental and emotional...nothing physical could possibly be involved, and if it was...she didn't care. Well...she did care, but not to the point where it mattered. Attie didn't understand physical pain, as she never experienced it in the fullest...her luck always pointed to tears...
She didn't noticed his coughing, but the giggling subsided regardless. It was rude to laugh at others expense, and although she wasn't insulting him (or not meaning to) it was still all together just...rude.
His next speech caused Attie to blink...there were only natural colored soquili where he came from? That had to be a terribly limited amount! "So no wings, either? I can't tell you why the rest of our species exist, that's not my place to answer it...but I simply cannot fathom a world without unicorns and winds...your poor two-leggers."
Her head bobbed up and down in a quick manner, she really did want him to accept her proposal. Surely he wouldn't try anything because well, he didn't know what there was to try...and she wouldn't either...it was far too risky going down that road right now.
Plus Shadow seemed a great fellow, and Attie didn't want to ruin that. In the back of her mind she somehow figured that the request wouldn't seem too strange for the stallion before her....she knew that he would take it as an opportunity to do something right, right? There was no way she was going to with away with 'making a move'.
But boy how she wanted too....
"Silly stallion, I don't need protection from what lurks in the night. I've been alone far too long to worry anymore, I just assumed it would please us both to well....have some company. But no, I do not have a regular slumbering place."
She smiled at him when he gave her the lead, and slowly walked down the path not turning her head to check if he was following her. He was, for sure, so there was no need to make it obvious that she wanted him to.
"There are so many options though, were do you normally go? I like to find a cave or some type of a cozy blocked off area....although I think we are too far from something like that..."

"Wings? Heavens no. Where I reside i'm considered a freak for many a reason; but this quilled mane and tail is usually the first that is pointed out as abnormal. I suppose it is a two sided picture, even though we have no unicorns and winds....we are also without Kalona and Skinwalkers."
Each situation was unique, he knew that...each person was a bit of a two sided coin in their own right. The good and the bad, it gave balance and that was a very important aspect to Shadow. Sure, he may be a bit faster than most soquili, stronger and his limited knowledge of emotions made him better at what he did; but on the flip side of that coin it also meant he missed out on a lot too because of these atributes. There was a sense of balance that he was helping restore in his life, having been on one side of the coin for far too long that it was about time it was flipped to the other.
It seemed; unbeknownst to him that Abattie may have been in the exact same boat as he.
"You don't?"
He knew she wasn't exactly a damsel in distress, yet surely most here in these lands felt unease with the amount of danger that appeared in the evening hours. The stallion could feel a bit of a smirk draw up the corners of his lips, knowing that she did have a strong personality was a very likeable quality (even if it may not have been a true quality!)
"Well, even if protection is not what you need, It will be but a perk of company i'll provide." It was nothing but the truth, while in his presence he was certianly not going to let anything happen to her!
"Since scouting this area for the past month i've aquired a usual place to sleep when I do so; it is actually not far if you've ever passed by the large thicket of bramble bushes north of here. I've cleared a path in it, and it is quite weather resistant much to my surprise when I first discovered it. Not many are curious enough to look for the opening in bramble because its more hassle for less reward."
Without hesitation after the lead was taken the ebony stallion took pace beside her, the edges of the bramble patch ahead in distant sight. As the night progressed full force the temperatures slowly began to fall, and for this late autumn season his breath slowly began to turn into whisps of steam from his lips and nostrils.
Aproaching the thicket, he lead her over to thin trail admist the thorns and woven branches; too big for anything larger than a regular to fit through.
"Allow me..." He offered, making his way into the mass of bramble carefully. From the outside it didn't look as big as it was untill one was in the depths, and walking to the center of it was a rather open clearing; blocked off from the weather above by the thickness of the branches but wide enough not to feel cramped. Shadow had dragged a bunch of wheat grass from the nearby fields in to make the ground a bit softer, and moving to the edge of the makeshift bedding he laid down - making sure Attie would have enough room.
"It isn't luxurious, yet it does the trick."
Looking up to her, there was a mild curiosity to know what exactly was going through her head at the moment.

A freak? This...hunk of a gorgeous, manly stallion was considered a freak where he originated from? Ugh, the nerve of those who dared call him that! If she was there, she would have given all of them a piece of her mind, she would. Did they consider a golden coat to be abnormal too? Did they consider honest and true beauty to be strange? Ugh! Her facial expression was one to be frightened of, and she felt like crying for the poor stallion. A freak! The nerve!
"Well, some Kalonas aren't terrible, my Papa has met a few....but a world without skinwalkers is something I would like to see. I suppose it does have a plus, but honestly...those creatures you lived with before have no taste, calling you a freak. If that mane is strange to them, they should SEE some of the honest to heaven freaks around here." Abattie huffed a little, her lower lip puffing out ever so slightly.
The two-sided coin thing played for everyone. Attie was terribly, terribly foolish and ignorant when it came to fighting. Anything physical for that matter. The small mare was beginning to see that she could indeed, control her emotions when she needed to, right? She hasn't cried once yet, since this stallion came around, did she? And that was a first. Perhaps there was more to life than just getting all riled up about nothing and letting it destroy her.
"No, I'll be fine." Throughout the months and years of stalking stallions she learned that they liked a strong hold-myself-together type mare, and she was doing to her best to be that way. Even though perhaps it was true that she didn't need help, the mare definitely wanted it. "And thank you, Shadow I appreciate that. You're a compassionate being, and your Maria would be proud." She giggled slightly, hoping that if she lightened the mood after mentioning something that would normally through others off the boat would make him happy.
The mare listened to him describe where he resided on a nightly basis...trying her best to seem even remotely interested. His grace mixed in with utter masculinity was almost too much to handle, and there she was...just standing there with him! The normal Attie would have already scared him off trying different things to be with him, but she couldn't ruin this....she just couldn't. "Wow." She giggled again after he was finished, what more was there to say. "You've really found an excellent place then, I'll bet."
So she followed him, intensely curious as to where he lived. Honestly, though....a stallion like him probably had to have the best seat in the house, and it was probably the most ridiculous of tricks and odds and ends trying to get back to his home.
At first the mare was confused, it didn't look like much. But when they approached the clearing, her mouth fell open. "It's...wow, how did you find a place like this?" She stammered. Admiring everything around them, she plopped her body down on the soft wheat grass next to him without a a second thought.
"No, it's amazing. It's so well hidden.." She looked back at him wondering too, what he was thinking.

What was with that look? Shadow's expression quickly faltered into one of mass confusion to the sudden death glares of the sunshine mare before him. Was it something he said? God he hoped not, he may have had the upperhand to most when it came to strength and speed in battle...but the stories of enraged mares on the warpath was something akin to the warpath of Skinwalkers. And that was just something Shadow was not prepared to encounter! He was aware that not everything was as it appeared, and even the most sinister of beings could be as cuddly as a bunny...but as of this moment he hadn't encountered such; yet he believed her.
Shadow couldn't help but let a small chuckle from his lips, so thats what it had been all about. Had she really been that upset over him? It felt a bit strange to have someone so worked up over himself, that hadn't happened since....well, Maria was alive.
"I appreciate your concern, Abattie...yet it didn't really bother me much. I had a job to do...it wasn't of my concern what others thought of me..." Perhaps it was a bit of a lie, no creature could withstand harsh words without some personal doubt and pain....but he was a warrior. Often he had no need for emotions...but that had already been covered in conversation!
Her comment about Maria had indeed put a faint smile on his lips, it felt good to hear that she would be proud of him. A bit taken back by how easily and quickly Abattie made herself comfortable beside him, Shadow adjusted himself a bit yet knew that their proximity couldn't be helped. Immediately he felt the heat rise in his cheeks, strange...that hadn't happened before. Yet no time to dwell on it, he had to answer her least she noticed something was bothering him to the point of incessive thought...and he figured she'd be pretty good at picking it out.
"Its an old story that Maria used to tell me, one which I got inspiration from. It was called Br'er Rabbit, all about a rabbit who was raised in a briar patch...and one day he was caught by Br'er Fox. The fox was going to eat him for dinner...but wasn't the brightest of fellows...and while he was telling the rabbit how he was going to skin him, then cook him and eat him....the rabbit used reverse psychology and said fine fine...as long as the fox didn't throw him in the briar patch. Of course it looked deadly, but to someone who knew how to use it to their advantage; it was harmless. So in short, the fox was fooled and threw the rabbit into the briar patch thinking it was the ultimate torture and death...ended up to be the best thing for the rabbit because it was his home."
Oh wait....that was surely babbling on... "Sorry..." He quickly ushered out, a bit embarrased and it showed dearly on his cheeks.
"Its late, we should rest up...winter is on the way so the days are getting shorter and we'll need to conserve our energy." He paused, not sure what was appropriate to say since he'd never exactly had anyone sleep over, in a sense.
"Good night...Abattie." Shadow spoke quietly as he laid his head on his legs facing away from her...and it wasn't before long before he'd fallen asleep.
However, something strange had happened during the night...the stallion had never slept so calmly and deeply; put in a state of peace thanks to the mare. Perhaps he'd never know just how during the night his body had snuggled up and curled around her own, or just how his head found her neck to be such a lovely pillow....but the peaceful and tired expression on his face may have said wonders for his prior sleeping habbits.

Admiration for the strong stallion grew every second, even as she listened to him talk. He did not care what others thought of him? Oh how she longed to be able to feel that way!
Golden hued eyes stared at him when he told his story, wondering whether to be interested, or just fake it. The mare wanted to be polite but it was getting late, and he was blabbing on about something that didn't matter. Ah, well he started, might as well let him finish. "Fascinating." She finally said when it was over. In all honesty, it was....simply because the mare was amused that a rabbit outsmarted a fox. Weren't foxes supposed to be the sly ones? "And it's quite alright, I enjoyed it." Abattie giggled again, this time amused as his discolored cheek. What that a sign of emotion he was showing? Surely it was! Oh what joy!!
"Good night Shadow..." She whispered back, and fell into a deep sleep almost as quickly as the stallion.
-----------
"Buzzzzzz"
....
"Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz"
......What the....?
"BUUUUUUUUUUZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!"
Golden eyes shot open, startled by the noise that rang in her ear, louder and louder as the seconds past. Damn bugs. Why did they have to bother her right now? Head tilted, she spotted (and felt) Shadow's head resting on her neck, and he looked very much like a sleeping colt. The sight was actually quite adorable, and she dared not wake him.
But she was up, thanks to the early morning bugs. Heck, the sun hadn't even risen yet. It was painful to be awake at this hour, but the mare couldn't help but want to stretch her legs. Somehow as Shadow curled himself around her, she got stuck in between him and now it felt rather awkward. Ah, yes. A nice stroll was probably a good idea, she might even be able to make it back in time before Shadow woke up. The sun was no where in sight, at least not in this part of the forest. Sliding her head from under his, and her legs away from his, the mare left the black, tough stallion and left the place they called home for the night....to take a little walk.
"Buzz...." In her ear again, but Attie didn't mind. It only made her laugh. Perhaps it was a sign that she was supposed to be up at this hour, and she was supposed to be walking deeper into the forest than she's ever been (a wrong turn down a path led deeper, currently unaware of her situation the mare kept walking along). But the simple fact that the bug, which would have once made her explode with tears didn't today.
Was she happy, when she didn't even know it? Was she truly, honestly happy? But why....?

It was then he saw her, sneaking out from the thicket of thorns. Perhaps he would have gone inside such a cleverly disguised home to see what else could be lurking inside....but there was something more easier to stalk which didn't include squeezing his lumbering frame into thorns. The mare seemed chipper, but not in a way which made her annoying; no...something had caused that pleasant aura to radiate off her.
It drove the stallion's curiosity up the wall to exactly what it was.
Deeper and deeper into the woods she journeyed, just like a scene from a fairytale where something could go horribly wrong. Perhaps, she should have wished for a visit by a big bad skinwalker. Instead...she had the Lord of Nightmares on her tail; which depending could have been better or much, much worse.
Although silent in his footing, massive dragonic wings against his side...his tail always gave his position away once he neared. The crackling and pulsating energy which flowed from his spine into a makeshift tail echoed through the trees in the dead silence of the night (asides from the annoying buzz of insects). Once he knew she'd be able to hear something amongst the shadows, his golden eyes lit up like fireflies; his voice calling out with a smooth, deep tone.
"Dangerous to be out in this time of night, with a coat more adept to conceal in the daylight hours."
Practically appearing out of thin air from the shadows and into the faint moonlight glow; his black body caught the faint light just enough to show his outline...otherwise completely concealed in the blackness of the night. His frame massive like that of a shire and a wide, mischevious grin etched across his maw. Stepping closer to the mare, he indeed wanted to be blunt about what was making her smile the way she was....but now where was the fun in that.
"How rude of me though...lacking any introductions. Most call me Lon, its much easier than my full title." Almost like the sun itself, his golden eyes seemed to glitter with curiosity about this equally golden mare.

There was no telling of the horrors that were about to unfold before her eyes. Or, as she could come to view it, the most important thing that happened so far. Either way, nothing would of prepared the mare for the amount of emotions that would come pouring out. No amount of old quotes from Bairn floating through her mind would suffice and fix her problems.....
Right now, the mare was content being oblivious to it all. Better to be happy for once and not know why, then to constantly worry about tears.
It was then her ears caught wind of, well...she had no idea what. A noise, but of what from? Crackling almost, but not quite like fire. The sense of evil suddenly arose around her, but Attie ignored it. Evil didn't exist unless the victim viewed it to be so. But the voice, the voice that came next told a different story. It was eerie. Spooky. It reeked of danger and violence. The mare didn't put it together, though, her foolish thoughts only turned to one thing. Male. The voice was deep, it belonged to a stallion.
A stallion!! Yay!
Her eyes scanned the sight before them before she spoke words. He was...mystical. An absolutely well put together almost god-like creature. In her opinion anyways. Jaw dropping, the golden mare couldn't help but stare. Where did his body stop and the darkness start? Was he apart of it, was he a shadow? Was he a figment of her imagination? Was he a GOD? So many questions rolled through her thoughts, this stallion she just couldn't let go.
She wanted him. Almost as quickly as she saw him, she wanted him.
"I'm fine sir, thanks. No one would dare harm me. You're the darkest I've seen in a long while, and I don't mean that literally." She giggled, the words coming from what she thought was a complete stranger. If she hadn't felt her mouth move, it almost as well could have. The voice she carried deepened, like she was being seduced, or...seducing. Something strange...but wildly amusing.
"Lon? Such a silly name. I'm Attie then, not at all shorter than my real name but if you're not going to give me the full, I won't either."

Oh really now? He'd encountered many who wouldn't have the slightest second thought to wether or not she'd make a tasty little treat or simply a fun toy to destroy. Yet that was neither here nor there in his intentions this early morn, no...harming this little creature was very low on his list. A low chuckle rose from his throat, allowing his lips to curl back to expose a pair of rather impressive rows of sharp teeth. What a fun game she had decided to introduce to him, this flirty dance had indeed captivated his curiosity....he wanted - no....needed to know more.
Slowly in a fluid waltz like step he closed the distance between them, brushing his side against her own as he circled her. His tail brushing against her legs, crackling and licking against her flesh which wouldn't harm her, but mere tickle in a static kind of mannor. Coming back towards her front, he moved his maw close to her neck as his hot breath brushed against her fur on this slightly chilled morning.
"I disagree, there are many who would find a pretty little thing like you quite scrumptious. However their twisted desires don't match my own....quite the contrary really." He almost purred, voice smooth with hints of coyness.
"You tease me so, Attie." Indeed, she wished to know his full title hmm? Well, he wasn't about to let the poor thing suffer!
"Lon is short for my full title, Lord of Nightmares. Do you wish to use such an extravagant title, or will you be satisfied with calling me Lon? He smirked, drawing away from her neck to stand before her once more. Indeed this mare embodied everything he wasn't. She was bright like the daylight, held an innocent from devious desires (well, some types anyways) and well, was relatively normal looking.
Yet it was that...which perhaps lured the King of Darkness to take such an interest in her, and her interesting silly games of lust.
"I believe, you owe me your name as well then, Attie"
He rumbled his deep vocals in a most becoming manner, glowing golden orbs locked on the mares....almost as if trying to read deeper into her very soul.

If there was one thing in this world that the shinning gold mare knew (or thought) she was good at, it was flirting. She had mastered the art after so many failed attempts as a young mare, she wanted to be good. She wanted stallions to bow down to her, and not in the sense that it gave her power, she just wanted to feel loved. But both of her parents were horrible in the flirting business, and she carried that trait, unknowingly. Abattie always came on too strong, not enough, too awkwardly...and always, always too quickly. She was Shadow's little expert on emotion, which made her unexplainabley happy, but to herself, she was the tiny little expert on flirting.
But history shows that she was horrible, and that every stallion found her to be just...too much. Too much of a crying little brat. And she was unaware of these stallions opinions. So this stallion to her, was like the rest of them. About to experience her excellence in her department.
What the stallion did next was unexpected, but not denied. She loved every second of it, the feeling as though their bodies connected instantly, being completely sexual. A chill soared down her spine as that crazy tail tickled her entire body. It was hot all of a sudden, at least from her point of view. Was this what it felt like to be liked back? She definitely found herself instantly attracted, did he too? The mare held her breath as his own tickled her neck, and let out a sigh as he stopped, a sigh of passion...a sigh of relief.
"Oh, well I haven't met one of them yet then." She giggled, keeping the young girly side to her in tact, so she would appear like the innocent mare she didn't think she was. "And are you saying that you find me...attractive? Cause I uh...." -no, no....stuttering was not allowed. "I find you incredibly attractive. I think it's the way the darkness swallows you up."
"I'm good at that." She winked her pure golden eyes. Her favorite part about her body, really...because they blended in with the rest of herself. "Lord of Nightmares? And you said everyone calls you Lon? Well, I don't want to be everyone, I want to be special, so how about I call you just Lord? I bet no one's referred to you as Lord. Am I right?" She giggled again, this time even more childish than the first.
Ah, crap. She had meant for her remark to get his full name, and not have to tell her own. But perhaps nothing escapes this mysterious beast. Eyes wide with embarrassment for being caught in an awkward...well, stupid lie, she began to stutter. "I...uh, you...it's uh, really you only have to put uh....an a and a uh, b in front. Like it's like uh, A-b-attie. Nothing special, likes yours."
She stared right back at him, but with different intentions and thoughts than his. Had she known that she was an experiment would she protest, and run away? Probably not...but it was best she didn't know...
