You got three months under your belt. I'll tell you right now...you will not be shredding anytime soon. And if you think you will then you are setting yourself up for failure which could eventually lead you to quit guitar. Just being realistic about it. What you should be more focused on is your technique and syncing your hands timing. Don't worry about shredding right now. Speed is a by product of familiarity. Speed will come on its own when you've done it enough. Which brings me to another point. With only three months of playing I seriously doubt you've developed any speed in your hands twitch muscles. Gotta start at the bottom like everyone else. Sorry...

For the record tho Micheal Angelo Batios instructional DVD's helped me alot too.
Well its really about 4-5 if i'm being specific..i just feel like i only have 3 monthes of real learning considering i'm on my fifth string. Secondly i wanna start shredding and doing techniques as a secondary..as far as dropping guitar i don't know how long i can have fun playing only melodies..i mean playing Old Mcdonald had a farm gets old after doing it 50 times perfectly don't you think. On the other hand playing other things on the side makes it seem not so bad..so doing the other stuff is a positive to me..not a lead to frustration and failure.

Right, well what I'm sayin is just because you know old mcdonald doesn't mean you're ready to move on to shredding. Learn one song and then learn another that is in you level of experience. You'll work your way up so don't worry about it. I'm just sayin you're better off having some realistic goals. You can't really expect to accomplish in 4-5 months what has taken others YEARS to do.
Thanks for the advice everyone. And um..yea what i'm just trying to say is on my own time where i'm doing what i'm not assigned by my teacher i wanna do some other sideline things. I wanna perfect abilities such as alternate picking and a good vibrato. I wanna start with other things so when i get ready to do the other advanced things i would have gotten a little warm up i guess. Like for example i've learned the songs Never to Late by Three Days Grace and Through the Glass by Stone Sour..i mean sure i didn't learn it on proffessional staff but i have the actually ability to be able to do them without staff. I'm learning to read staff and all the that but i wanna develop ability. I feel like i have the ability to actually do these songs although i can't actually read staff perfectly. Its like a writer who has great ideas but can't right in the language of the country he wants to publish his book in.

What i'm trying to say is i wanna devolop ability in the areas i already have the skill to. I wanna develop accurracy and speed. I wanna develop advanced skills such as vibrato and bends. Things that you don't need staff for. I wanna take on some songs without staff and do some tab till i can fully read and comprehend staff perfectly. The area i lack most in as far as my lessons go is Tempo..so yea i mean i definatly need to practice on that but i still wanna do stuff on the sidelines..i hope you all get what i mean....

Soulless Perfection
I wanna eventaully attempt to be as good as Herman Li (Dragonforce) and Dan Doneagon (Disturbed). Anyone got any ideas for any good shred books?

Get Guthrie Govan's books. He's by far the most technically flawless guitarist I've ever seen, and he can play virtually any style of music, from hardcore jazz, to country chicken-picken', to shred metal. He started playing at like 3. He's like the Tiger Woods of guitar. Absolute monster.

More importantly, he's articulate, can write well, and is a fantastic teacher. Don't be put off by the book titles. For instance, his second book is subtitled "Advanced Techniques", but ultimately advanced play comes from close attention to fundamentals, and Guthrie will get you started doing it right so you don't spend years practicing bad habits (like I did).
