Alette sat at her desk, an old fashioned pen in hand, and stared out at the dark skies beyond her window. She had been like that for the past half of an hour, ever since it was dark enough for her to be at any window. It was how she began every evening. Occasionally, she would write down her thoughts, but more often than not she would simply sit there until some sort of obligation revealed itself and she was forced to leave.
When a person was immortal, their perceptions on the world were altered infinitely. Her sense of time was different than that of a mortal's. What a Vampire would call a short amount of time and what a human would call a short amount of time were entirely different things.
"I miss the stars." She murmured to no one in particular, her crimson eyes closing as she exhaled a peaceful sigh. Those eyes were a problem for her, which is why she had invested in brown contacts as soon as they were practical. If she had to go into public, then she would use them.
Her body had aged differently when she became a Vampire than how most others did. Her hair had gone stark white and her eyes became red. It was almost as if her entire being reacted so poorly to the change that any pigment she had in her body had just vanished. No one seemed to care about her hair, nowadays, though. It seemed to be the popular new thing. Besides, she was unwilling to go that far to disguise her appearance. She didn't care that much if they saw her hair. It wouldn't compromise what she was.
Today seemed to be a peaceful day. Or night, rather. No attacks were planned on their end, as of yet, and it seemed as though those wolves were taking a break, as well. But you never knew. They could be moving in for an attack right then and there. For just a few moments, though, she wanted to relax and ignore all of that. She wouldn't even worry about where the others were. Not right now.
Those worries would resurface soon enough, anyway. They always did.

I can feel the night beginning, Separate me from the living! Understanding me, After all I've seen!
A woman looking to be in her early twenties jogged down the street, singing along to the song playing through her iPod nano, which was clipped to her belt. She wore a short red waitress uniform, reaching about mid-thigh. Over that, she wore a white apron, and her hair was tied in a white bow. Her shoes were white and she wore hose, an unfortunate dress code that she had to abide by. People stared at her strangely, but she didn't mind.
Piecing every thought together, Find the words to make me better, If I only knew how to pull myself apart!
The song could apply to two entirely different kinds of people. The first part of that particular verse reminded her of her enemies, while the second part reminded her of her friends. It was an interesting song.
Too bad it had to end when she arrived at work, and pulled the ear phones out of her ears and put the iPod in her purse. She'd have to go to the back of the restaurant to put her things away, and then start dealing with the night-time crowd. The restaurant was open until midnight, and she was supposed to have been there a half hour before. Maybe she could just sneak in without the boss noticing...
"Alyssa!"
Or not.
"Yes, Mister Warner? What seems to be the problem?" Which is something only guilty people say, but Aly turned to face the man in question, her boss. He was in his thirties, tall, handsome, and very strict with his employees. She was smiling, though, in what she hoped was a disarming way. Maybe he'd let her off with a warning.
"You're late." He consulted his watch, as if he hadn't known how late she really was. It was all an act. "You're a half hour late."
"I know, I know, sorry. Something came up." Something always came up, but that was just part of the territory of being what she was. "But I'm here now! So it's okay." Aly batted her eyelashes smiling. "Right?"
James Warner frowned at her. "Don't make it a habit. Now get to work." He turned and stalked away.
Victorious, Aly hurried to the back room to put her things away and start working, like James wanted. She didn't like him - or rather, she wasn't interested in him - but she did take advantage of every weakness he had to keep herself out of trouble.
She worked at the Peppermint Café, which was a place that other people like her would hang out. Contrary to the cheerful name, it was dangerous at night. Then again, no one actually knew that the building was usually filled with Werewolves, not even her boss or the other workers. Not that it made that okay, but it was a secret, so it wasn't really much of a problem. It didn't look like any of the Pack was there right now, but some of them might show up before the night was over.

Patrol duty was not her job of choice, yet here she was, patrolling Denver for any sign of a fight. She could be out finding them herself. She could probably take a Werewolf or a Vampire if she caught one alone, but those weren't her orders. The Merlin didn't want anyone to bring attention to the Wizarding community unnecessarily, so looking for a fight would be a bad thing. That didn't mean she couldn't be completely prepared, just in case one attacked her.
Melanie wore a black leather jacket and black gloves. The gloves were enchanted to protect her hands from the ice magic she used. Even though it was directed at others, there was often an unpleasant blast of cold air, so she took the measures necessary to make sure she didn't get frost bite. Her jacket, though, was enchanted to help protect against sharp or powerful blows. If a sword was aimed for her side, the jacket would usually stop it, unless there was a very large amount of force behind it. If some supernatural being punched or kicked her with enough force to kill, the jacket would protect her to the point where she might just break a few ribs. It wasn't fool proof, but it helped.
Other than those two items, she wore nothing else that would protect her. Her dark blue jeans weren't enchanted, and neither were her tennis shoes. Neither was the scrunchy that held her long blond hair in a pony-tail.
There was, however, a silver pendant around her neck. The gem in that necklace held some extra power that she could use in a pinch, but it could only hold enough to give her one last chance at using a large spell. After that, she would be a sitting duck. If the enemy wasn't dead, she probably would be.
Melanie removed the sunglasses that thad been covering her dark emerald eyes and stuffed them in her coat pocket. It would look strange if she continued to wear them now that nighttime was so near. People would stare. Attention was not something one could afford these days.
She was bored. Really bored. So to pass the time until absolutely nothing else happened, she started to sing quietly to herself.
"Under your spell again I can't say no to you Crave my heart and it's bleeding in your hand I can't say no to you."

"Looks as if tonight might be one of those peaceful nights,"he sighed boredly, walking from the slightly beaten path to the freshly paved sidewalk. Deciding to get away from the home and all who annoy him, Marco causally walked on the sidewalk that was before him after leaving the woods. After a day of doing nothing but hanging around at home with the other members of the pack, he was looking forward to what the night might have in store for him tonight. It wasn't like he wanted trouble to occur tonight but a little excitement wouldn't be to bad, a small fight perhaps."Just remember not to start anything so you can be blamed for it later,"he told himself, walking closer to the street without realizing it. A car came zooming passed him with horns blaring, a soft growl creeping up from the bottom of his throat. Marco slowly walked back into the center of the sidewalk after taking his right hand out of his pocket, extending it out to the street, then only showing his middle finger up towards the car that went zooming by."I was no where near the street so you didn't have to honk,"he said outloud, realizing that the driver wouldn't hear what he said. Although the driver was probably only looking out for him it still didn't give him the right to honk his horn. Sighing out the last bit of frustration he had, Marco continued to walk on the sidewalk until he approach the street he was looking for.
Turning at the end of the corner lead him to a familiar place with a familiar resturant that most of his kind hung out at."No better place then Peppermint's,"he said showing a soft smile on his lips," time to get me some eats or perhaps a good drink,"he said, taking his other hand out of his pocket then bringing them together, rubbing them back and forth. He causally strolled into the resturant, stopping to see if there was any familiar faces around."Hmm, not to late at night so I might not see some members here yet,"he thought, frowning a little," I was hoping to see someone I knew so I didn't have to be alone,"he thought, not that he cared about dining alone. Certainly wouldn't be the first time nor will it be that last time too. A little company never hurt though, specially when it was company from other members.

Twenty days. It would be another twenty days until the Full Moon, when she would be forced to turn Wolf. Ever since she had been bitten, it had become second nature to keep track of the days until the Full Moon arrived. She kept track of the days until the New Moon, too, because that was when the enemy was at their strongest. It was good to know those things. Especially when your enemy would be at their strongest in only five days time. The Pack would need to be careful.
She pushed the door leading back to the main room open with her foot, as her arms were busy balancing a tray of drinks. People heading for the night shift often came by for some coffee to help keep them up, but the hours were never as busy as the daytime hours were. It was for that reason that she had taken on this job, rather than the busier one. That, and Vampires were up all night, so she may as well be up at night, too.
"Here are the drinks you ordered. Enjoy!" She set the tray down in front of a group of tired looking men in their early to mid forties. "I'll be back in a few minutes to check on you." She turned to leave the table when she spotted a familiar face come into the restaurant. She smiled, but didn't show any of her teeth. Among members of the Pack, it could be taken as a threat.
"Marco!" Alyssa trotted over to him, stopping a yard or so away, and averted her gaze. Yet another way to show that she meant him no ill will. Eye contact with the other wolves was something that you only made when absolutely necessary, or when the situation was calm enough that no one would assume a threat was made. And you never, ever, stared a higher ranking wolf in the eye for long. You'd pay for it with your hide. "You're the first one to come by. Can I get you anything?" She glanced at him and then looked down again, focusing on his shoulder. She had been a Werewolf for so long that she never even noticed the instinctual behaviors anymore. They were just a part of who she was, now.

This is no white cross, it seems we're out of class..."Ma'am, are you absolutely sure that you want that much meat?" the kid behind the counter asked. "Yes, I'm absolutely sure," Artesia sighed. "You ought to know by now I come in every other week and ask for 30 pounds of steak. Why must we go through this rigmarole every time?" The teenaged boy started bagging up her steaks as he answered, "It's just that some weird rumors are going around about why you need so much steak." Artesia shook her head as she pulled out her money. "Is that so? Well, I'm about as normal as they come." He didn't need to know who she was taking about when referencing "they." "I'm not saying I believe any of them, I'm just saying that people are saying things." With that he handed her her meat and took her money. "You know we always appreciate your business, Mrs. Black. Have a nice day." "You too." Artesia took her steaks and pushed open the door of the butcher shop with her arm. It was only then that she realized that these bags were cumbersome, and she should have brought someone to help her. "Where's Marco when I need him?" she whispered to herself. Might as well get these home, she thought to herself. Three bags on each arm, two in each hand, she took off struggling toward home.
When she got home, she went to the deep freezer in the kitchen and put the steaks inside. Seemed that nobody was home at the moment, so this could be a rare night off. No vamps to contend with, no magic users following them around, and thank goodness, no hunters. Artesia smiled at the hope for a quiet night. But since there was no dinner to cook, now what? She could always go to Peppermint; Aly was there. The only question was if William would be home. I should check before I go, she thought to herself as she started to climb the stairs. We all are fragile, like statues made of sand...

Aithne sighed, hands jammed in her pockets, as she walked around downtown. She hadn't sensed any prey around, and she had already trained for the day. She even had read a couple books. Bored, she set out, wandering the city. Eventually, she found herself downtown, staring at a sign, blaring Peppermint Cafe. Slightly curious, she went inside, and sat down on a stool. Perusing the menu, she decided to indulge herself, so she ordered a cup of coffee. Looking around, she noticed that there were several werewolves, including the waitress across the bar, but she had no interest in them. Only vampires. Werewolves, of course, were enemies to vampires, thus she was an ally to them. However, she preferred not to deal with them.
Aithne sipped her coffee, stirring in only one pack of sugar. After this she would need to do an extra hundred crunches. Casually, Aithne observed everyone around her, without actaully staring. Aithne had perfected this art a long time ago, from years of hunting prey in dark taverns and such.

Marco took a seat in one of the booths near the left corner of the diner to get away from the others, enjoying the company of friends but despising the company of any other being. Soon he realized that he wasn't the only one in the diner and a familiar face came coming towards him."Good evening Alyssa, I'll take a coffee, black,"he said simply, placing his elbows up on the table. He placed the palms of his hand on his forehead to brace himself up while he stared down at the table, sighing. Out of no where he sneezed loudly without covering his face like he wanted too, disgusted at what spray out on the table. Taking hold of a napkin he wiped the area off that had been sprayed then tuck the napkin out of sight, under the table somewhere with a small grin."Someone must be talking about me,"he said laughing a little bit then frowning. He better not get word that someone is talking ill of him while he wasn't around. It was still wrong to say mean things about him to his face but it was cowardly to say those things behind his back.
As he stared around the resturant to see how many inhabitants were sitting around, noting that all seemed to be human. The humans tend to stick out in a place that only has two werewolves in it at the moment, that would change shortly. This place was popular amongst their kind so it was only natrual to see more familiar faces as the night went on, despite the fact that the resturant closes at midnight. Of course by then they wouldn't need to occupied this place for very long since they usually all headed either home or out into the woods, watching out for vampires or other enemies. That pretty much how the nights were spent whenever they were roaming about."I wonder if William and Artesia will come here tonight?"he thought, looking towards the door as if expecting them to walk right through that door. They didn't, frowning and looking back down at the table while he waited for his coffee.

"Good evening!" Aly greeted him while she nodded, not bothering to scribble the order down on her notepad. She'd remember it. "Of course, be right back!" She turned her back on him - a sign of trust among wolves, even if she really did need to turn around to go to the kitchen - and hurried to go fill his order.
Thanks to the table full of older men that had arrived before Marco did, all of the fresh coffee was gone, so she started making a new batch. She poured the coffee beans into the machine, added water and a filter, then pushed the ON button. While it ground the coffee beans, she plucked down a big cup from one of the shelves and then set it by the machine.
While she waited for it to finish, Alyssa went back out into the main room to check on the other tables. There were only a handful of customers there, and even fewer staff members. At night, there were only a few people that worked since it was so much less busy. People on her shift knew how to make beverages, clean up tables, and perform their waitressing duties at the same time. There were still a couple cooks, which were necessary. The waitresses wouldn't be able to cook, clean, make drinks, and take orders all at once without slacking off on one duty or another.
"How is the coffee?" She asked the men politely once she neared the table.
"Good." One man muttered, and the others grunted in distracted agreement. She smiled and nodded, then walked away. They went back to whatever conversation they had been having before she had interrupted them. There was a couple other waitresses on duty, and they took care of the few other groups between them. Their manager, James Warner, was busy with something or other back in his office. He would occasionally come out to check on things, but he usually avoided the late crowd. She knew that he hadn't wanted this job, but that he needed it to keep his apartment. Poor guy. He didn't have a tight-knit group of people at his back, protecting him. She was lucky that way. Smiling, she went back into the kitchen.
The coffee machine beeped just as she walked in, and she started pouring Marco a cup right away. Careful not to spill it on herself or the floor, she made her way back to the main room and walked up to his table. "Here you go, Marco. It's hot, so be careful." She smiled him for a second and then down at the table - again, not showing her teeth - to show that she was kidding. It would take a lot more than a hot cup of coffee to bother anyone from the Pack. "Anything else?"

"Thanks,"he said, putting his hand through the handle of the mug but not lifting it just yet. He had to think for a second when she asked if he wanted anything esle, debating between waiting for some other or just going on ahead and ordering. On any other night he would have gone ahead without waiting since most of the pack would be back home but tonight was different, quietier for once. It was still early in the night though, there was no telling if things would get louder later on. After several seconds of silence between him and Alyssa, he had made up his mind."Not right now,"he said looking up at her. He noticed everytime she looked at him that she turned away seconds later, smiling without showing her teeth. At least someone showed respect in the pack even though he would allow the occasion toothy grin go by unlooked."I'm going to wait and see if William or Artesia will show up soon. Check back in twenty minutes and I'll have an order ready for you,"he said smiling, showing his teeth instead of hiding them like she did. Unlike her, someone who was under him, he didn't have to worry about flashing his teeth around unless it was in the presense of William. Not that he would challenge William anytime soon now would William take it that way, he stilled had to be careful when around the Alpha.
Artesia was probably out replenishing there food supplies right now since there was quite a few mouths to feed. Marco enjoyed eating at home with all the members of the pack around but he also enjoyed eating out, alone unless with the Alphas. Very rarely was he seen with any other member of the pack unless it was a case like this, sitting in a resturant that a fellow werewolf was working in. Some members annoyed him to the point where he flashed his canines, others just simply stayed clear of him for their own safety. There were only a hand full of members that he enjoyed being around, Alyssa being one of those. He had always enjoyed being around William and Artesia since they knew each other for quite some time. Its that reason alone for his quick temper and harshness towards others, usually staring down any member who comes too close to either of them. He didn't have to say anything either, usually a stare reminded them what their place was in the pack and that was enough. Sighing, Marco knew well enough that his attitude towards other has earned him reputation, not that it bother him though.

"You're welcome." Alyssa smiled and glanced at him, nodding once before looking away. "Alright, I'll come back in a little bit, then." She blinked at him for a second, a little flustered, and looked away. She knew that the flash of teeth he had sent her wasn't meant as a threat, but if she had been in wolf form, she would have been cowering just out of instinct. As it was, though, she only turned sheepish and hurried away to the kitchen. There wasn't much that would occupy her for twenty minutes other than dishes, and even those would be finished quickly. At least the other girls would appreciate that they wouldn't have to be doing them tonight.
As she scrubbed the dishes - they had to be, or they would leave residue even after putting them through the dishwasher, and that wouldn't look good to the customers - she thought over what he had said. There wasn't much else to think about.
Maybe he was expecting the Alphas to come, or maybe he was being hopeful. She didn't know. But if they did come, then she would work hard to make them happy. Alyssa didn't really know why the Pack came here so much. Maybe it was just because it was quiet at night. Or that they liked the food and drinks that were served here. Or maybe they just came because it was in their territory. She didn't know. They went to other restaurants now and then, but as far as she could tell, many of them frequented this place more than the others. Aly wouldn't ask their reasons, though. It wasn't a question that absolutely needed to be answered. It was just something to wonder about to pass the time. She wouldn't worry about it.

He was just about to take a drink from his coffee mug when he saw Artesia walk into the resturant, sitting his mug back down on the table in front of him. He gave a quick smiling with no teeth showing before looking up at her, occasionally looking around to avoid a long staring contact with her."Yeah its eery if you ask me,"he said, picking his mug back up off the table. He brought his lips to the porcelain material rim, opening his mouth just a little bit. Tipping the mug up some he let the dark liquid pour into his mouth until there was enough to gulp it down, resetting the mug back down on the table."Its still too early to think of it as a calm night though, best to keep our guard up as we move to the later hours. No worries though, I'll make my rounds later when I head back,"he explained, looking briefly looking at her before looking back down. It was weird to see her without William around, perhaps he was out running around with the others? Looking around the resturant a couple more times he noticed that someone esle was in here that was neutral to them, a hunter but against vampires. He didn't believe that there could be only one type of hunters that sole purpose was to hunt one specific race, always keeping his eyes out on every hunter."So, what have you been up to today?"he asked her," I see that you've been to the butcher lately,"he said smiling, noticing the aruma of blood and raw meat around her.

This is no white cross, it seems we're out of class...Her eyebrow rose a bit when Marco retorted that it was too early to think of the night as calm. "I didn't say that it was a calm night. I simply said that there is a calmness in the air," she replied as her head rose again to face him. "I just have a feeling that we won't be attacked tonight." Artesia looked around before bringing her gaze back to Marco. She felt a little vulnerable without William, though she'd never admit it. She did return his smile at his comment. "You smell that I've been to the butcher. Apparently its patrons have a few theories on why I need so much meat. People are so nosy." Her lips pursed for a moment before she sighed and continued. "Well, other than that, I watched a couple of movies, went for a run, and did other grocery shopping." She had a job, but she had taken today off. She turned her head back toward the Beta. "How about you? How was your day?"We all are fragile, like statues made of sand...

Out in the woods, William swung back and forth on a large branch, soon after a loud cracking noise began, escalating until the branch broke off of the tree all together. Landing on his feet, he threw the branch in a pile of branches, large enough to seem like he had been doing this labor all day. But, William didn't look at it as labor; he always thought that, as Alpha Male, he had the responsibility of providing for his pack, even if it was for entertainment's sake. Bending down, he grabbed the edge of the pile, dragging the branches back toward the house. William was in a sentimental mood, as he was on many nights, and thought that a nice bonfire outside would be a nice end to the night, after the pack made their rounds, that is. It would be a while until then, of course, it was only the beginning of a beautiful, clear night. Still, William would always be on guard, especially after his mother had died on a night just like this one.
As he dropped the stack of wood near the fire pit, William wiped the beads of sweat accumulating on his forehead with the back of his hand. Tonight a white t-shirt and drawstring shorts doubled as work clothes for William, and his un-tidy brown hair was pulled back into a ponytail to prevent sweat on the back of his neck. His feet were bare as he trailed into the house, seeing that no one was around, unsurprised. He padded upstairs and into a bathroom, splashing water on his face to cool himself down. After that he went into his room and changed into a similar, but much better smelling, outfit. The fact that Artesia wasn't there told him that she had already gone out, but not long before William had arrived; he could smell her scent still fresh in the air, deciding to follow the aroma into town.
As he walked along the sidewalks of Denver, he took long breaths, enjoying the night air, even though it wasn't as crisp as it was in the woods. Still, feeling slightly carefree was always a nice change to the night. Different smells lingered in the city air; good smells such as women's perfume and meat cooking in restaurants, and those not so good like the grime caked on a wandering homeless person, garbage, and dreaded silver jewelry decorating women's ears, necks and fingers. It was bittersweet, as most things in life were, like the thought that would always inhabit the back of William's mind: Would there be a fight tonight?
As William turned a corner, he immediately spotted the Peppermint Cafe and walked towards it. There was no longer the need to follow his partner's scent, he simply knew that she was there, along with Marco whom he caught faint scent of as he walked toward the cafe.
Pushing open the door, different aroma's choked his nostrils. The smell of coffee and food clashed with that of holy water from a hunter sitting on the opposite side of the room, and that of his own kind. Instantly he caught sight of Artesia and Marco, smiling brightly as he walked over towards their table. "Good evening," he said pleasantly before sitting down next to Artesia, across from Marco. Smelling the raw meat scent, he gently rubbed his arm against Artesia as he sat, a small way of showing his affection without being too forward.

Maybe five or ten minutes had passed since Alyssa had gone to the kitchen, but she couldn't help glancing through a crack in the door to see if the others had arrived yet. Sure enough, William and Artesia were at the booth across from Marco. The Hunter was still in the restaurant, and she was grateful that she had been late. One of the other girls had taken care of that order. Aly might have been a Werewolf, but she still wouldn't dream of confronting a Hunter, no matter what their specialty was. Not on her own. Now that the others were here, she breathed a sigh of relief.
She wouldn't interrupt them, though, since it seemed like the Alphas had just gotten there. They were still greeting each other and talking amongst themselves. She'd wait another couple minutes or so and then go out. In the meantime, she would just focus on other jobs that she could get done around the kitchen. Like actually finishing the dishes, for one thing. May as well get it done, since she had been the one that started it in the first place.
