Not exactly sure why people think that. I personally play bells, vibes and marimba... all time coolest instruments out there.
I mean my personal favorite was definatly vibes but bells are way harder and people just don't realize the skill needed to be able to play them.
I mean if you mess up, due to the high pitch EVERYONE WILL HEAR YOU!!! It's not like any other istrument can attempt to cover you.

I love mallets! Alot of people in our band think mallets are really cool as well because when were warming up you'll find them watching us.

If someone said they didn't like mallets to me I'd bash in their skull with my bronze mallets. ^^ heart

I play the bells, so this gets on my nerves. I think people don't like the bells because they can't play them.

i think some people just don't appreciate bells for what they are. some instruments are just appreciated. bells are actually quite unique with their extremely high pitch. i like them, but i basically like all instruments whenever they're played right!

like several people said, all mallet instruments are awesome when played right but people ******** it all up.
when it comes to our pit, we all make fun of them since most of them cant keep count. only the most senior of them is wicked sweet but he's the drum major for the percussions hardest song so F! evil but when done right pits sweet

I had to play bells for part of our winter drumline show last year. It's not that I don't like them, but the pitch can be a little hard on the ears at times. But when the right part is given to bells...they can be really beautiful. I play vibraphone normally...and people usually complain about that...not many really complain about the bells though.

I personally cannot stand my school's bell set. It's ancient and falling apart and heavy as hell. Yes, they sound pretty when used with the correct mallets, but our plastic ones broke, so the only ones that make the bells actually audible now are the brass ones. They hurt. -.- and our band's too poor to afford new plastic ones. Besides, we would need the money for new instruments completely.

As for why people don't like mallets in general... I think everyone else thinks we're a lazy bunch of people because we don't march. While we may be lazy in our personal lives, we are possibly the hardest working section in the entire band. I don't know how it is at other schools, but at mine we're always the first ones there so we can load everything onto the carts or trailer (depending on where the game is). Then we have to unload it, move it all onto the field, and move it off again before a time penalty. Keep in mind that we have almost no pit crew at all except for someone to drive the golf cart. Then we have to load everything back up, unload it from the carts/trailer, and put it all back the way it was in the band room. This usually means we're the last people to leave or, if it's a home game, we get less time after the show for food opportunities. What really annoys me though is the fact that next to no one outside of pit helps us. My brother's in low brass and he helps out because otherwise I'd kick his @ss. So people who aren't in pit, please, if you see your pit trying to get their stuff ready or what not, volunteer to help them. They will be grateful, trust me. [/rant]

They say they suck because they are ignorant to the epicness of the instruments!!!!!!! They also characterize all instruments played with mallets to be bells!!!!!!! That annoys me and I always correct then which might be why they hate me as a mallet player xd

its cuz they are high pitched and usually given to the crappy players in the pit.

I dont really like playing mallets, but I don't think a piece that calls for mallets can function right without them. They're definitely a centerpiece in a lot of music.

I like the bells biggrin I don't like drums as much because I have to be the beat of the band and Im seriously shy so I tend to play softly. The only thing I don't like about bells is you have to hit them really hard cause the sound just buzzes around you, I have sensitive ears so it hurts to play them too xD I have to play everything at school because I'm the only percussionist in my band class there's only I believe 6 in our whole school. I also can't read notes or beats so I have to memorize everything by heart and ear and I find it harder to do that with rhythms.

I used to think mallets suck.
But that was only because of the BD in my Elementary School.
She was very sexist and made me, the only girl in percussion, play the bells because they were "supossed to be played by a girl and if played by one of the guys, it would sound awful".
mad How does it make a difference whether it was played but a guy or girl?
She was an idiot. mad mad mad mad
Anyhoo, once I got into our middle/high school band, I played the bells for The Entertainer. It was a lot of fun and I ended up memorizing the whole song for the bells part...in two days. sweatdrop . I never used my music and my BD was asking why. I told him I memeorized it. He didn't believe me, so he made me play.
He was quite stunned. xd And then I played it in cut time... O.O Never doing that again, but it was a lot of fun.
I still know the bells part by heart... xp whee
