I personally can get my friends to play 4th ed. though i will be getting all the books.(preordered them for half off.) I like a lot of the features of 4th ed though, and the wizards.
But this is my way oh looking at it, though who played 1st ed, still play 1st ed. those who played 2nd still play second and so on. Infact my DM still holds on to 3.0. But the fact is i try not to compare them, they are different games. I like 3.5 and i'll still be playing it for years to come, but i also like 4.0 and will most likely be playing it too.

yes the 4th ed is good but, there are some things that i have heard that are not so good. like some of teh races that are in there. Halfings are not the halfings they shoud be like. With me like playing humans Rangers or fighters that are N. but over all i think 3.5 is better. I have tryed 4th ed on the 2nd internataniol day for d&d. but i have heard at gen con of 07 that most of it is going to be online that we willl have to pay for it. And i like the the 3.5 because my has dm over me. and he has been playing d&d sance his high school year, he is in his 40s. over all 3.5 is better.

I... HATE... 4th Edition... stare SO MUCH!
i kept hearing all this great stuff about it, i was so psyched, anxiously awaiting details... when they came... everything betrayed me. it made no sense, it was stupid as ********, they tore down everything i was used to and replaced it with this consumer fluff! no more monk, no more bard, no more druid, no more sorcerer!! THOSE WERE SOME OF MY FAVORITE CLASSESS!! they changd the entoire play-style of the game! and 30 non-epic levels!? WHAT THE ********!!? and what did they do to the races!? THEY DOWNLEVELED DROW!? CUT THE HALF ORC!? it's INSANE!! i HATE IT!! and all this computer ******** playinG!! GGRR!!! stressed
all i know is, i'm sticking to my 3,5 stuff, and patiently waiting for WOTC to dump 3.5 for good like they did to pokemon... i still have my cards, but they are useless in today's world, when the new generation is into yugioh, and their new pokemon are compleely different, the card game changed to be completelt unrecognizable, etcetera... the same will happen to D&D 3.5 eventualy... iii-_- all my thinsg will die off.. i feel so old for 18 years....

What part of "Wizards of the Coast are mass marketing whores" has people not understood?
There are three books necessary to run a typical campaign, and only two to actually start. Hell, if you just want to play a hack campaign, you can run only the PHB and go from there. Wizards will continue to market their product as neccessary for expanding your gaming. None of it is required, but all of it offers new options that at least one of your players will take to.
Expect them to continue releasing new races and classes in every book coming out over the next couple of years. They won't let it go quietly into the night. They will continue to maximize their marketing against everything that they already released. You will need to get their new material to have access to the basics we used to have.
New classes and races will come, unfortunately, they come at the price of 34.99 a book.

I find that patience is the key for 4.0. It was extremely limited when it was first released, and while still limited now, it has improved greatly as new material has been released. It seems to me as though prestige class has been replaced with the addition of new classes and with the paragon path system. I both like and dislike this system and it ties advanced game features to your level instead of to your skills. Though I can also see how that was necessary, given how the skills were butchered. My group has reintroduced several skills from 3.5 for our games. New features are being added to the game continually, making efforts to become as diverse as 3.5 is now, which I am sure it was not nearly as diverse upon its initial release as it is now. As you said, GSingley, the new books are somewhat spendy, which is why many devoted players have scanned their new books and converted them into pdf documents ready for illegal download available on many fileshare sites.

Actually, Dion, the Monk has not yet been released, though it is available in Dragon 375 as a playtest, and they plan to release it in the PHB3. And the drow were released as a playable race in the Forgotten Realms PHB.

meh... my tirades come and go actually... iii-_- i don't realy blame Wizards, they are within their rights to do this, and yeah, alot of teh stuff i miss IS being reintroduced... plus, i DO like the idea behind the Shaman class.... >>
point is, i realy just prefer the gaming systems in 3.5 and 3.0 anyway. neutral the Unearthed Arcana is a great supplement book i think, and that provides me with all the changes to the game systems that i could want and then some. it's very extreme itself. i have softened somewhat to it, but i still insist on playing teh game the way i learned it. as i said, i just feel too old for my age. xd hahah! i know men in their 40s who complain like i do that 3.0 destroyed 2.0

I also have friend that is nearly 40 and he says he misses the 2.0 days. Back when the only available races were Human, Elf, and Dwarf. And when a wizard risked death by tripping and falling over.

I don't really like one over the other. The way I see it: 4 = New D&D players 3 = Seasoned D&D players It is actually helping bring in a new breed of D&D players so hopefully they will explore the other versions.
