"Shinoma. I don't think I can do this," he whispered.
Those poor, unsuspecting deer. How could he bring himself to attack one? He would never forgive himself. Not that he knew how to attack them, either. He had never done anything of this sort before.
But that darker part of himself, the part that was truly Kalona, kept prodding him to prove himself, even though the part of him that was decidedly not Kalona completely rejected the idea. It was a battle of good vs. evil, all happening in the depths of Cobalt's heart and mind.
The deer were, of course, oblivious of the two Soquili, engaging in their usual activities, which made it even harder for Cobalt to want to harm one. Perhaps if they had been rabid, manically attacking him, he would have been more inclined to bear fangs and hooves against them.

Shinoma shot a look of pure venom at Cobalt; well as much was as possible when you were as tall as she was.
'Of course you can! You have Kalona blood in you.' she said firmly. 'I'm exactly the same as you, my father isn't a Kalona.'
Of course her father wasn't a flowers and sunshine grounded either, he was just as vicious as Izusa. So she probably wasn't the same, but she was furious at what she deemed to be a large waste of potential. She flicked her gaze back to the deer herd, noticing that one had moved away from the rest, and was even slowly meandering towards where they were partly concealed.
'And if I can kill, so can you.' she finished, nodding meaningfully at the deer that was moving near them.
'You can do it. It's very quick..' she wheedled now, the scent of the animal causing her mouth to water again. 'Just grab it around the neck and squeeeze till it dies.'

Cobalt grimaced at her glare. In it, he felt the disapproval of all the Kalona-born who had scorned him.
Prove yourself...
Grim determination flashed across Cobalt's face. Yes, this was disgraceful. Yes, he would probably have night-terrors of the deer's face as he mercilessly killed it. And yes, he would feel terrible after the deed was done. But he could prove himself a Kalona. Shinoma was right. If she could kill, he could.
Though his softhearted nature screamed protests, he sank down into a crouch, shyly baring his fangs, ever conscious of her watching eyes. Waiting, he allowed the deer to come closer, until he could hear it's soft heartbeat. He saw it's velvety hide, the long lashes of it's eyes, how it was unsuspecting, unprepared for what was to come.
He felt a twinge of regret as he lunged, striking it's jugular mercilessly, shuddering in disgust as the bones of it's delicate neck crushed in his jaws, and the taste of blood filled his mouth.
Releasing the carcass, Cobalt spat out the blood, sorrow clouding his eyes. Yes, he had proven himself capable of killing...but he had no joy in it, whatsoever.

Shinoma watched him through a haze, her own youthful blood lust rising, her heart thrumming in her chest.
'Yes..' she whispered, seeing his fangs flash, the crouch and then the swift movement forwards, followed by the impact of his strong jaw around the fragile deer neck. She shut her eyes at that point, swaying from side to side as the creature gave out a last heart-wrenching cry.
'Beautiful..' she murmured. Her mother had told her to treasure that moment, when your prey died, and the life force slipped past you, brushing you on the way to joining the spirits.
'Wonderful.' she praised Cobalt, her eyes going towards the carcass, her nose filled with the scent of the spilled blood. The rest of the herd had scattered, and they were alone with the downed deer, and she pressed her nose briefly against the cooling flank. 'Well, now the best part.' she urged, looking up at him. He had to eat his kill after all, what was the point otherwise? She could only dream of landing prey this size at her age, and she wanted to taste, but he had made the kill..

Cobalt frowned as he stared into the still-open eyes of the deer. Life was indeed fragile...it could be snuffed out in the blink of an eye. The metallic taste of blood covered his tongue, filled his senses. The taste of death. Cobalt shuddered again, filled with disgrace at what he had done.
He realized what she was waiting for. It was his kill...etiquette required him to have the first taste. "Shinoma...I can't." His words came out in a whisper. "It was innocent...so..so innocent. It didn't deserve to die. How can I further shame it by eating it?"
