Ardia reeled from that tidbit of information. Not only was she a grandmother, not only that she was a great grandmother..no wait, and she listened to Atsila with widening eyes..great-great grandmother!
'Spirits..' she murmured, floored at how big the family line had gotten, and all without her knowledge.
'My goodness. So not only do I meet one of my grandchildren, but I find out that she is a grandmother in her own right! I feel proud, and oh my, a little older than I did before.' she said, but she was smiling. She felt proud more than anything, that her children had gotten on so well in life that their children were having children..and those had children of their own.
'It seems as though I have a bigger task on my hand then I thought. I have to meet those of my blood at least once in my life. Do you see your children often though?'

"Ah see mah sons more often than Ah see mah daughters... But they come back an' visit every now and then. If you've got some time Ah could show you where we live... It's a bit o' a walk, but it's nice." She nodded slowly, glancing back over her shoulder across the plains. It would take at least a day to get back to the lake where she and Nuka had raised their children.
"Nuka'll be glad that Ah've made m'way back home. He gets worried if Ah'm gone too long... Thinks Ah'm off runnin' 'round or something." She nickered softly, shaking her head slowly. "He worries too much. There ain't no one Ah'd rather be with than him."

'I don't mind a walk,' Ardia answered swiftly. After all, if she knew where this one grandchild lived, she could actually visit every so often, maybe meeting her great grand children, and great great grand-children at some point!
'That way I can come by at a later date, if you don't mind occasional visits from your old grandmother that is.' she said, smiling warmly.
Ardia gave a little nod as Atsila talked of her partner.
'That's how I feel about your grandfather Sheridan.'
She didn't want to speak of how it had been a long time since she'd actually seen him, she just knew however that he would love to see all his family as much as she did.
'I'm glad you've found someone like that, that's I hope I had for all my children, and I'd like to think of my grand children and so on to be just happy in their lives.'

"Nuka an' Ah didn't get along all that much at first... Well, we got along, but not as good as we do now... My daddy didn't like him none either, which just made me like him more." She found herself grinning almost thoughtfully as she turned to head down the hill so that she could lead the other mare back towards her home.
"Ah don't mind visitors... It's nice t'have family wanderin' in from time t'time... And that way if you ever see Mama again you can tell her you've seen us an' she needs t'come visit too."

'Well, as I said, I am happy for you. Finding someone that you can get on with, raise children and grow old alongside. It was always my wish when I was a younger mare I seem to recall.' Ardia said, stumbling a little down memory lane. Sheridan.. she thought, but gave herself a small mental shake. Now was not the time to dwell.
'Well I will do so, not to often to be a bother obviously. And if I cross paths with my daughter, I will be happy to send her your way. And maybe give her a little scolding for not letting me know sooner that I had several grand-children already!' she chuckled.
'So, what do you find yourself doing when your time isn't taken up with raising children?' she asked, as she followed her grand-daughter.

"Can't say it was a wish o' mine. Ah wanted t'be wild and free like Mama... Then Ah wound up pregnant with Kizuka and Wadi. Ah didn't know what t'think. Didn't like Nuka all that much then either, but he's grown on me... An Ah think Ah've grown on him." She nickered softly, shaking her head. They certainly were an interesting pair, she and Nuka.
"It wouldn't be a bother... No more than Pah an' Rogue. We've got a nice little home now and a friendly pair of two-leggers that keep an eye on us just in case." She paused for a moment to think as she continued walking. "Ah tease Nuka an' wander 'round a bit. Nothin' all that excitin'."

Ardia listened as Atsila spoke frankly of her relationship with this Nuka stallion, one eyebrow raised. She really was another generation; Ardia could never talk so openly, not even now when she felt at her most abandoned. And of course she wouldn't want her first meeting with one of her grandchildren to be tainted with her own woes, so she continued to keep her peace.
'Tease him? What about?' Ardia questioned. Atsila and Nuka's relationship seemed so good in her eyes, despite the rocky start the mare had said they had. Maybe that was why they got on so well now?
'Well, I travel more often now than I did when I was younger. Maybe it should have been the other way around though,' she admitted with a chuckle.
'My old bones don't carry me as they used to.'

"All sorts o' things... Mostly Ah tease him about him bein' a grandfather because it's what he used to tease my daddy about an' it's funny seein' his reaction to gettin' a bit of his own medicine." She nodded slowly. Nuka had never seemed to enjoy being old and it was a good thing she'd never viewed him as such. Older than her, yes, but never too old to keep up with her.
"Ah used t'wander a bit more once Ah had a better feel of my legs... But then Ah settled a bit and with the exception of needin' t'wander a bit every now and then Ah ain't never been happier."

'Some just don't like to be reminded of that fact, 'grand' anything makes them feel old. So I should feel positively ancient,' Ardia joked.
'But growing older can also be a positive thing. You can be seen as having wisdom with age, even if you're not particularly wise.'
Ardia nodded at Atsila's words;
'Like most I think. I really seem to be doing this the wrong way around in my life. I didn't wander so much when I was younger, and although I know I'll enjoy meeting my descendants, I don't have the stamina I used to.'

"Ah don't think there's any wrong way to go about wandering, even if you're doing it now instead of before you settled. Ah think it happens when it happens because it's when the Spirits want us to. It may take time t'get where you're goin', but at least you're goin' there, right?" Her brow lofted slightly as she glanced back over her shoulder at her grandmother. "Part o' the joy of life is takin' your time t'breathe everything in."

'Well true, the time taken is well spent, I'm not missing the scenery by rushing through an area.' Ardia smiled at her grand-daughter as Atsila looked back at her.
'Though given that the family tree seems to be bigger than even I expected, I'm not so sure I want to spend the rest of my days searching for you all, so a modicum of haste is in order. And of course.' she went on.
'The season will be turning for the worst eventually, and I don't plan on travelling during the winter months.'

"Well, Ah guess in that case it might be a good idea t'ask where you live... So that way we can just start bringing the strays back t'see you." She chuckled softly, her grin bright as she looked at her grandmother. "Us bein' such a spirited lot and all."

'That you are,' Ardia said with no small amount of pride. She couldn't have imagined a few years back when she met Sheridan that this large and rambling family tree would have been the result.
'Oh mine is an easy place to find, I'm to be found mostly at the two-legged one's Village, I find the fire and the shelter to be a great comfort for my old bones.'

"We live in the woods by th'big lake. Just two teepees and a small herd mostly made up o'family." She nodded slowly, still guiding her grandmother along the path. "Our two-leggers are real nice. They helped me out with mah foals th'first time... Back before Ah was alright with th'whole family thing."

Ardia nodded, she remembered how scared she had been the first time she had given birth. Of course after those three, and then the subsequent birth of her second lot of children, which had resulted in four foals, she was much more relaxed over the whole thing. She'd even helped a friend of hers with her first birth.
'I wish I'd have been there for you though.' she said.
'I would have liked to have witnessed my great-grandchildren coming into the world.' the mare smiled, and then gave a cheeky wink.
'Well, let me know whenever you get the maternal urge again, I would be happy to sit with you during the labour.'
Sometime Ardia missed having foals of her own, but she wasn't sure if she had the energy for pregnancy or running around after them anymore.
