Ashokan Farewell DayofDance Yes, it drives me insane. My band director actually fought the school board about having Band under the "sport" category. They haven't done that yet, but we can now letter in Band!
heart We could letter in band but we could also letter in academic quiz bowl, so that's not saying much. The way our course requirements worked, it was better to have marching band as a fine arts credit becuase we were only required to take one semester of PE and it was a required class and there was no way they were going to waive the class altogether for us or the football team or the soccer team or anyone else who had sports classes during the day. To make matters worse though, the way it ended up for me was that I had to go straight from marching band class to gym class. Try running a mile in less than 10 minutes after spending an hour and a half on the parking lot drilling tempos as high as 200 bpm. That really sucked. ah thats exactly how I was only I went from gym, to eating lunch to band/orch deff. brutal I hated it

Wendy Wicked punk_gurl2011 I hate that! Yea I know the football players work hard, my brother is in football, but we march a 7-8 minute show without stopping, football they play for 10 seconds and stop. I mean come on, our band practices more then the football team. I also hate how the teachers let kids in football and other sports slide on their homework because they had a game or practice, but not me because its marching band. The only teacher who let me do that was my geom teacher and that is because he loves watching the band. I know its soo retarded I mean; the band kids are out just as late; and I bet we get more exhausted; they constantly have breaks and time outs and whatnot we march around in 239487234 degree weather wearing heavy clothes, having to either hold our arms up or carry at least 20 lbs on our shoulders we dont complain we ain't pansys cool I know. Oh my god my gym teacher gave me s**t when he found out I was in band (hes also the football coach...) I would have my show shirt on and he would look at me and laugh, and when we would be in the weight room I would have a lot of weight on (more for my legs) and he would be like that is to much weight, but he never said that to anyone else. Then one day for spirit day I had paint under my eyes like football players do and he was like "Oh, are you going to be a big strong football player now?...I think it might be to hard for you" and I gave him the dirtiest look ever and was like "you know what...it is way harder then it looks, you wouldnt be able to handle it" and he was like eek . He didnt really say many comments like that anymore.

heart We can letter out our 2nd year in band. Our letter even says Band on it and everything! But yea...its not a sport here either. No one apperactes its what so ever. All the sports get these huge trophy/show off cases, like 7 feet by 4 feet by 2 feet or so...band gets one to, a 1 foot by 6 inches by 3 cm...

What make's people think that this isn't hard??? You know what? There's this thing where a parent will go up to a baseball coach and say, "WHY DID YOU BENCH MY KID!! PUT HIM BACK ON!!" But you rarely hear a parent say to a band teacher: "YOU DIDN'T GIVE MY KID THE SOLO??!!! WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU?" I guess parents are tone deaf? mrgreen

I played four years of baseball, but marching band is WAY harder than that. Definitely a sport.

At my school martching counts as pe credit, heck I got my p.e required credits before my fine arts.
I think my school system realises how hard it is to march...
Then again... Texas is real completive when it comes to marching.

I wish our school did that;; but nooo it's totally lame; we almost had all of our fine arts taken away because we had this HUGE teacher cut; but then everyone protested and rallied and we got it back 3nodding

we jazz ran for 30 yards last year, talk about a leg work out, i can loose weight during marching season, eating nothing but pizza, and hamburgers. we practice more than the foot ball team, or any other team, because we strive for perfection. and perfection hurts.

We Hardly get credit for band. It's like 1/4 credit for us. bleh. P.E. is now every day for us, and all our fundings go into the track, basketball, and football departments.

ughhhh.....I'm so tired of people saying that but at our school they can't
According to our schools standards it is a sport.....it counts as a P.E. credit and we have to have a physical done to be in marching band.....
I'd like to see some of those people who say marching isn't a sport to try to do marching band....not only does it take physical strength(marching,practices,etc..) but it also takes mental strength (memorizing music, counting, etc...) razz
