Yazmina stretched out a wing, careful not to hit him, but it made it easier to see where the color stopped and started. Truthfully, it also felt good to stretch. "I'm not sure. Maybe there's a little bird somewhere in my bloodline," she answered warmly. "There's purple stuff because my mother has purple stuff in places, I suppose."

"I wonder if I've got a butterfly somewhere." He eyed his own wings. "Mamma didn't have any pink on her. Only Daddy. How come my wings are pink, when Mamma's are green, and Daddy doesn't have any wings?" Amitola fluttered his wings.

So many questions! Yazmina laughed quietly. "I don't know exactly why any of us look the way we do," she admitted. "Maybe your mother's mother has some pink. Or your father's father has wings."

Amitola shook his head. "Daddy's Daddy only has a horn like Daddy. Same with Daddy's Mommy." Nodding, he added, "I don't know 'bout Mommy, though. But she's all blue and green. Why wouldn't she get any pink from her Mommy?"

"Well what if she's not special? Does that make me special?" He grinned, and added, "I don't usually ask my parents stuff. Sometimes I'm scared I'll annoy them too much and they won't talk to me anymore. I don't really get to see them, anyway. Tsubasa and Lina are with them." His grin faded, but still remained. "Did you grow up with your parents? Or did you have aunties like Midori and Dusty, too?"

...he didn't get to see his parents? Yazmina couldn't fathom and she frowned a bit. "I don't think you could annoy your parents so much that they wouldn't talk to you. They're your parents, after all. They love you." She'd never met any who didn't love their foals. "And they'd want you to have answers to your questions so you can grow up well. Never be afraid of asking questions."
"I grew up with my parents," she supplied. "There was other family, of course, but home was with my mother and father until I got old enough to leave on my own. And now I'm here." And she was still adjusting.

He sighed. "That's what Auntie Midori says. But I sometimes ask Dusty too many questions and she starts ignoring me. Midori says that her and my daddy are really good friends, and that Mommy and Daddy just couldn't take care of two babies at the same time, so Daddy asked Midori to take care of me. But... Midori takes care of me, and Phae, and Dusty, and Dichali all at the same time. That's like..." The foal stopped and made lines on the ground. "Five of us! So why can't Mommy and Daddy take care of two Soquilis, but Midori can take care of five?"
"Really? What was it like? Did your Mommy teach you how to fly? Mommy hasn't had time to teach me yet. Midori says she would, but she doesn't have wings." Nodding, he added, "Sorry 'bout talking so much."

"Do you like where you are, with your Auntie Midori and Dusty?" Yazmina asked. "It seems like you do. If that's true, then maybe all this wondering is just for nothing. You're very lucky to have someone to care for you if your mother and father really can't, whatever the reason."
She nodded then. "My mother taught me. Does Dusty have wings? Or any of the others in your herd?"

"I guess so... But it gets kinda boring sometimes. Which is why I go off exploring when they don't know about it." He nodded, stretching his legs.
"Dusty doesn't. The only other ones who have wings are Dichali and Phae... But neither of them know how to fly, either. Phae says she's got a friend who is gonna teach her. He said he would. Dichali doesn't want to learn how to fly, though. He says that he's better than us and doesn't have to learn to fly first to prove it. I think he's just chicken, though."

"No one knows when or where you go? That's not very safe, Amitola. What if something happened to you? How would they know how to find you and bring help?" She wasn't the foal's mother or caretaker, but she'd worry all the same. "You should tell someone. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if they knew where you were."
She set aside her concern, though, to listen again, and found herself smiling. "It can be a little scary when you first learn to fly, so maybe he is a bit afraid." She paused. "If you don't have anyone else to teach you, and your aunties think it would be all right, I could teach you." She looked at his wings again. "Your wings aren't like mine, so flying with them probably wouldn't be the same, but we could try."

"Well, if I'm gone long enough, they'll come looking for me anyway, right? Besides, I don't always know where I'm going. It's like every day's an adventure!" He grinned and tossed his short mane.
"How's it scary? I'm not scared, and I can kind of fly." Nodding, Amitola fluttered his wings. "Teach me? Really?" The foal got excited and bounced in place.

"Of course they will." She believed that without question. "But if you've gone a long way, they won't know where to look. You wouldn't want to upset them, would you?" She was certain she knew the answer to that one too.
Then she smiled. "Flying low isn't scary, but if you go higher, sometimes you'll look down and realize how far away the ground has gotten, and your heart skips a little beat and for a second--just a second--you get scared. Well. I did."

Amitola blinked. Upset them? That's the last thing he wanted. "But... Auntie Midori's really busy taking care of Phae sometimes. I just don't want to be a bother." He frowned, seeming to not hear her after that.

She spoke to him anyway, frowning faintly. "I'm sure you're not a bother, Amitola. That isn't what I meant you to think, at all. She obviously cares for you. Watching over another foal doesn't mean that she's burdened by you. She sounds like a very generous mare, but a smart mare. I don't think she'd have agreed to watch you if she didn't want you."
