"You tell me when and help," Fiero said. "I not cook much. We buy pizza lots." He didn't say this aloud so that Korea wouldn't hear and get her feelings hurt. They really only got real food when Ewan came over and cooked. Fiero didn't mind. He liked pizza.

"Envy like cooking? What best food?" Fiero asked. "Sit, watch TV?"

He floated over to the couch and approximated sitting. It still took a little concentration to touch the ground or sit in a chair, but at his height eating was difficult unless he made an effort. He couldn't hover over the chair as a child might, or his head would be high above everyone else's.

Invidia nodded as Fiero said he would help her. Then blinked a bit at the fact that neither of them could cook. Why couldn't they cook? Was it really that hard? Mrs. Van de burg made it seem so easy. She didn't take into account all the cooking and years of experience she had when making this thought. "Yes, I like cook. Cook much food with Wind-L mother. I home alone much. So Envy cook with Wind-L mother."

She looked at the TV for a moment. Wendell didn't watch all that much TV since one wasn't in his room. There was only the one in the family room and usually his parents watched that. During the day she was too busy flitting around the shop to watch it. She understood there were pictures on it and that you would watch them but she didn't know about all the shows and channels. "What we watch? One box in house. Envy not watch much."

She floated over to the couch and climbed up onto the back. This was her usual perch when Wendell was actually down stairs. She liked the back of the chair because she could always see over people, being naturally shorter than most.

"Good. TV makes people stupid. Is joke. I not know what shows now," Fiero signed. Aloud he called, "Korea, what's on television right now?"

He had expected to be told to just check to TV Guide Channel or find a newspaper with local listings. To his amazement, Korea rattled off a list of shows which were either on or would be on shortly. The two of them didn't watch much television in the apartment, so he assumed that she must watch television when she went over to Ewan's. She really only had cable because it came with the apartment. She had the television only to watch movies.

"Which you want watch?" he asked Envy. "Can tell about some, not all."

He had recognized some of the shows, from being home a lot over the last year when Korea had classes and sometimes disinclined to go out, so he could give summaries of what they were, but he probably couldn't do it in ASL. He was thankful Envy understood spoken English as well as ASL, even though she couldn't speak English herself, or any other vocal language.

Invidia wasn't really sure what to watch with all these choices. Why they all seemed interesting none of them made her really want to watch them. She thought them over carefully then decided to be safe and maybe help Fiero learn something. "We watch food show?"

The Food Network was part of cable (at least at Bya's it is) and always showed neat chefs and their way of cooking things. Perhaps something would be on that Fiero would think was neat while they waited for the food to cook.

((Sorry, short))

"Food show good. Better than real food." Remembering that humor didn't always translate, despite his grin, he added, "Joke."

He handled the remote deftly, flipping to the Food Network and finding themselves at the beginning of some show about cooking. Obviously. Fiero was not enthralled with cooking, on the whole, but it was safe, and it was the channel Envy had chosen, so it would do him no harm to watch. Food wouldn't take too long to be ready, after all, and he might pick up something from watching the channel. Certainly the food it showed looked appetizing.

Had he a different personality, Fiero would have blushed, or at least registered some sort of embarrassment when his stomach rumbled loudly during a period on the show when a particularly decadant food was displayed. Instead he chuckled and said aloud to Envy, unable to fully interpret into ASL, "At least with no stomach, you don't have to worry about that."

Korea overheard and came over, leaning over the back of the couch. She was frequently distracted while cooking, which is why her food frequently came out a bit differently than otherwise expected.

"Yeah, what happens to anything you eat?" she asked. "Or do you really not eat at all?"

Envy greatly enjoyed the cooking show. She knew all the ingredients the chef was using. Strangely enough she had an idetic memory so she could always cook what she had seen prepared. She blinked a bit when the sudden rumbling sound occured. When Fiero explained that's what stomachs did she looked confused. "Never hear at Wind-L house. Everyone always eat."

Which was true. With a woman like his mother, there was never a shortage of food to eat. If it wasn't pastries or candy it was leftovers of whatever meal they had the night before. So rarely did anyone's tummy get the grumbles. "Envy stomach will make noise?"

She blinked as Korea appeared over the couch and asked about her eating habits. "Envy eat. Need some food. Not large plate." She couldn't live without eating something for energy, she just didn't eat a lot due to the lack of body mass she had to power. "Sauce done soon. Go check. No burn." Yeah, faaaaar too much time in the kitchen.

Fiero considered Envy's question. Would her stomach make noise? Considering it was a by-product of hunger, he sincerely doubted that she would ever havve an opportunity to get hungry at Wendell's house.

"Envy stomach will make noise if Envy not feed stomach. Is not likely Wind-L mother allow hunger," Fiero clarified.

"No problem," Korea said after Fiero interpreted for her. "Small plate for the Envy-monster. Thanks for the head's-up."

She pushed herself up, away from the couch and wandered back to the kitchen to check on the sauce. She sneaked a glance over her shoulder at Envy when she realized that the little undera was correct. She turned the boiler down to a simmer and checked the pasta while she was about it. It was almost ready. It looked like this would be the first meal she cooked in a while which came out as it was supposed to. Shocking.

"Dinner's almost ready," she called, back, having the impression that she was telling people what they already knew. "Set the table, Fiero?"

"Real place settings or disposable?" he replied.

"Real. Envy will die of shock if we feed her off of paper, plastic, and styrofoam." The majority of their food was served on such, but she kept a set of real tableware, too, for occasions when she had guests she wanted to impress.

Envy nodded at Fiero's explination and agreed. She doubt she would ever know hunger in that household. She began to realize that this stay with Fiero might be informative. She would understand her growing body better from someone who was experiencing the same thing. Except male.

"Envy monster?" The dark undera suddenly looked a little vacant, as if remember something. She didn't want to watch TV any more. In fact she kinda curled up a bit. After a few moments and after being called to dinner, she went back to her normal curious yet distant manner.

"You dispose plates?" Korea was correct in that Envy hardly ever ate on anything that was not a proper eating plate. The little undera followed the elf into the kitchen and help put out the silverware.

"Tomorrow. Before park. We go shop for food. Envy make special meal for Fiero and Korea. Sa thank you." She signed all this to Fiero to tell Korea, so she would know there would be a meal for tomorrow.

Fiero caught a hint of Envy's distress at the joking term Korea had used for her. Clearly something about the phrase didn't sit well with the undera. He guessed it was the "monster" part, since Envy didn't seem to have any trouble being called Envy. He filed that away to consider later, at a more appropriate time. He also made a mental note to tell Korea not to call Envy that anymore.

"We can," he replied to Envy's question. "Paper plates we dispose. And s-t-y-r-o-f-o-a-m cups, and p-l-a-s-t-i-c forks, knives, and spoons. For you we use real plates. You special guest. Thank you help with plates."

Fiero interpreted between Envy and Korea, sharing Envy's generous offer to cook. Korea blushed, thinking to herself that the little banshee was already horrified with the way she kept house and unable to help feeling self-conscious about it. She got like this when her mom came to visit, too. Where Envy couldn't see it, Fiero signed to Korea, who would understand the simple signs, "Okay. You not bad."

"Thank you, Envy," Korea said. "That would be wonderful. Would you like me to come with you, or should I just send Fiero out with money? Also, Fiero, when do you anticipate you'll be bringing her back from the park?"

Fiero shrugged. "When she's ready to come home, I s'pose."

Envy nodded to his explination of the disposable eating things and smiled as Korea would allow her to cook. "Korea come with. Is tall, reach food on top." The little banshee realised something else quite quickly. "Bread Fiero! Bread! Must put on spread!"

She grabbed the small bowl she had made the butter and garlic spread and waited for someone to pull it out of the oven. She wasn't allowed to use the oven because she was so small. Once the bread was out and cut she spread it carefully, the butter melting and the garlic scent rising into the air. "Put back now, not long now. Good bread."

Korea smothered a giggle at Envy's distressed and emphatic signing over the bread. Fiero's dry interpretation of Envy's use for her at the supermarket: "You're tall, and you can reach the foods on the top."

To the itrepid shoppers she said, "I'd be happy to come with you shopping, but you two are on your own when it comes to the park."

Both of the apartment's usual inhabitants sniffed the air appreciatevely. Fiero loved his garlic, and anything else which added spice to a dish. He liked his foods muy picante as one Mexican restaurant warned on the menu. He had been told that certain kinds of cajun could actually burn your mouth with just the spices, and he wanted to try that, too, someday.

He returned the bread to its place in the oven, heedless of the potential danger to his hands from the heat. He didn't have much of a problem with heat, and he could move quickly enough that it was unlikely he'd burn himself anyway. Korea and he both supposed it came from being an elf, which were notoriously light of foot and theoretically as light of finger as foot at need. Certainly there were a number of elven thieves in literature.

Envy just nodded, having quite the independant streak in her. She didn't think she'd need Korea at the park. The supermarket was a different story. Food was heavy. She blinked as Fiero put the bread back in without hurting himself. "Fiero not burn hand? Must be safe next time."

She shook her little finger at him before helping serve the food that was already done. Her plate looked so small in comparison but it was really all she needed. She stirred her pasta to spread the sauce out. Then she sat back and put her hands together. In her mind, she asked for forgiveness for her past inhumanities, though she doubted there was a caring mind listening. Once done, she started to eat.

"Is good. Korea good cook." She childishly slurped up a long noodle so that it hit her nose with a smear of sauce. She looked cross eyed at her nose before taking her napkin and whiping it off.

"If I move quick, I not burn hand," Fiero agreed. "Hurt hand before when move slower. Move quick now."

He and Korea seated themselves in their fashions at the table, taking places wherever. Each of them had a place where they were accustomed to sitting, but they did not adhere strictly to that seating arrangement simple because it was what they were used to. Fiero insisted on occasion that they vary their routine, and so both he and korea had gotten better about being displaced. Interestingly, Envy had managed to select for herself the chair neither of them would have sat in because it was unofficially designated the guest chair for some obscure reason.

Korea put her paper napkin in her lap - the result of long years of her mother sniping at her about manners - and cast a quick glance at Fiero. Korea did not pray before meals, and therefore neither did Fiero. Her glance was meant to convey that they ought to emulate Envy and clasp their hands, even if they put no special significance behind the action. It did no one any harm, she figured, to simulate prayer for the comfort of others. Nevertheless, Korea was relieved when Envy decided to make motions toward eating. Both she and Fiero unclasped their hands too quickly.

They had both picked up their respective forks and held them the exact same way to twirl spaghetti around. They twirled spaghetti the same way, too, which was to be expected, since Fiero had learned his table manners from Korea. Fiero interpreted for Korea, passing along Envy's compliment. Both were gratified that Envy seemed to like the meal, even though Fiero had had little to do with its preparation.

"Thanks," Korea said. "I don't do it that often. Mostly I order out. You'll probably be getting a lot of delivery while you're here."

"Don't worry," Fiero said, "Lots of good food can be delivered."

Invidia nodded at Fiero's explination but doubted that she would be willing to try it. She had been burned before while helping in the kitchen and it was not a fun experience. After eating the small amount she had she watched the other two eat. She found it interesting they ate the same way.

"Delivery? No cook? Envy can cook. Envy cook for Fire-o and Korea?" Delivery was only ordered at the Van de Burg house if Wendell was in the mood for pizza. Even thing his mother sometimes just made homemade pizza. Envy didn't see why she shouldn't cook for them, after all they were letting her stay with them.

"Envy no have to cook for Fire-o and Korea," Fiero assured her. "Unless Envy want to cook."

After dinner, Fiero cleared the table, but he made no move to wash the dishes. That task usually fell to Korea. Fiero had nothing against cleanliness, and he bathed and showered, but he was not a fan of detergents. He found that whatever cleaning agent went into dish detergent made his hands very dry and chapped. Korea suspected that he was allergic, but they couldn't very well take him to a doctor and get him checked out. He wasn't that human looking.

While Korea washed up, Fiero went into her room, where most of the good books were kept, and found himself some comfort reading. He was accustomed to strolling around the neighborhood after dinner, but he thought he might ask if Korea and Envy wanted to come, which would mean he'd have to wait for Korea to finish with the dishes. So that Korea and Envy could both be apprised of his plan, he said aloud, "Would anyone like to go for a walk later?"
