He followed. In that, he was predictable stallion. Where the mare who had his attention went, he went too. "Why does that surprise you? I mean, I thought you thought I didn't like mares." A few more thoughts and he'd have been thoroughly lost.

"Seven." He whickered softly, impressed. "That is a lot. And foals for the foals too? No wonder you're out here alone. Three seems like nothing now. But what about you? No special stallion in a herd that size?"

'No, that was the impression you gave from what you said about not wanting to be near your herd mares because of their chattering.' Meena said with a grin.

'Given that any males in the family that aren't a mate of someone in my bloodline, would be actually related to me no. Besides, we aren't really a herd proper, just all tied by who we came from.'
she gave a soft snort.

'Besides, I'm done with stallions for the time being, until I can find one who is genuine in his affections.'

"I like them," Diego protested once he'd untwisted himself. "I just don't always like my ears buzzing. Nothing against the mares at all. I like mares," he said again, though he had the vague impression he was digging himself deeper into trouble.

His ears pricked forward. "Done with stallions? But how will you find one you ...like if you're done with them?"

'Done with the overblown, think they are so wonderful, flirt with anything remotely female..stallions.' Meena corrected.

'I don't even want to think about having feelings for anyone until they can prove they are serious and not just making eyes because they think I am an easy touch.' she snorted.

'After all, there must be some out there right?' she challenged Diego, looking straight at him.
'Stallions who want to get to know you, and not just lead you along with a pretence of feelings.'

He fought the urge to back up. Or turn away. Or...run, for that matter.

"I. Of course there are," he answered, somewhat warily. "Stallions who like more than a pretty mare, I mean. Friends first," he offered, tail twitching. "And then friends might turn into good friends, and good friends turn into ...really good friends." He wasn't even going to go near suggesting that mares and stallions do what comes naturally. He was likely to get kicked or bitten.

Of course Meena understood and knew all about instinct. But just because they were animals, it didn't stand that they also had to act like them. They had reasoning, thought and emotions. Shouldn't that mean they weren't as base as some could be?

'So, you're that kind of stallion huh? You would make a tie first, get to know a mare before deciding that there is an attraction beyond the physical?'

If Diego decided that he could actually stand to be around Meena after this grilling, she had decided that maybe it was worthwhile just knowing him. After all, she could use someone who might be able to tell her what the heck stallions were really all about, and why they did what they did!

Yep. Definitely still in landmine territory. Of all the places he could have picked to land to get a drink. Well, no, that wasn't fair. This conversation was interesting, if potentially dangerous. He tipped an ear forward and back while he thought and pointedly did not shift his weight or move a wing. He didn't want to look fidgety.

"If I found a mare I wanted to build a herd with, I'd want to be friends too." That made sense, right, and was careful enough not to get him kicked? "Friends and physical. Physical friends."

Meena gave him a piercing look; he'd given her the right answer, but was it only because she was being particularly prickly and he was hoping to avoid being bitten, or was it because it was what he truly felt?

'So you wouldn't make conversation, tell a mare how pretty she was and make her think that there was a future together, when really you planned on never seeing her again huh?' she persisted. Honestly she did think he was an okay stallion, and probably didn't deserve all this needling, but what happened with Demon still hurt.

'Well then, if all that you say of yourself is true then whoever you end with will be a lucky mare among mares.'

"Well, of course I'd tell a pretty mare she's pretty," he insisted, slightly offended. "It'd be rude not to say something." He honestly believed that and stating the obvious had ruffled his feathers. He smoothed and shifted them back into place. "But much as it sounds like it'd be nice to have more than one mate, I think that's just a story. I haven't met any mares who'd agree, at least.

'And it's ruder still to string someone along, to put hope in a heart and then dash it again.' Meena replied, the pain etched across her, like a pattern on glass. She let out a breath, feeling more exposed than she wanted to be. Why did she continue to needle on about it? To this stallion who was a perfect stranger to her? She turned her head away, unable to look at him.

'You would have to have a hard heart, or none at all to be one of many.' she shook her head. There was his truth, finally. He would have many a mare clamouring for him if he could find enough that would let him string them along, not caring that they weren't special enough to be the only one for him.

'I don't believe it is possible to be with more than one. And that's all I want. And it seems too much to ask.'

"Not a hard heart," Diego answered. "Just ...lucky, I guess. You don't see it, so it's a story," he said again. "Probably just one stallions make up to make themselves feel better when a mare kicks them too hard."

He wasn't the brightest, but he wasn't entirely dense, either, so he added, "I'm sorry that a stallion did you wrong. If he made you a promise, he should have stood by it, no matter how many other mares he might have seen. Promises shouldn't get broken."

'And if they spin such tales is it any wonder that they might get treated in such a way?' Meena smirked a little, amused at such a though. For a moment her mood shifted, as she thought on meeting Demon and just giving him a swift kick to his behind.

The thought though of her being just one of many that had gotten the silver-tongued treatment brought her mood down again and her ears flattened.

'Somehow that would have been worse..' she muttered. Maybe that was the way to think of it, if he had stuck with her and it was only out of a sense of duty..she would rather be alone. Spirits! She had to, had to stop thinking in circles.

'I'm sorry I've been..well y'know.' she managed after falling quiet for a while.

He laughed. "But if they're just stories, there's no reason to kick a stallion for real. Stories don't hurt." At least he hadn't heard one that did, yet. "Hooves do."

He was getting the impression, though, that he was going to talk himself into trouble no matter what he said, and he didn't want that. She was a nice enough mare. She really was pretty, but she had him in a corner and he didn't know how to get out. When she went quiet, he did too. He stretched a bit. He watched a grasshopper climb a long blade of grass.

And looked up at her when she started talking again. "Sorry I haven't made you feel better," he offered in return.

'So does being false,' she replied to his first point, but only in an even tone this time, her indignant fire mostly spent for now. Meena chewed on her lower lip, feeling remarkably foolish. What she needed to do now was extract herself from this stallion with what little dignity remained to her, and to think of things on her own.

'It's okay, I think this is one of those life things that one has to work through on their own. I think just venting about it made me feel a little better, though I'm sure you weren't expecting all that.' she gave a weak smile.

He was taking a risk, he knew, wandering closer to a mare in a less than cheerful mood, but he did it anyway. Drifted over and, very lightly, bumped his shoulder against hers. "Hope you work through it soon. And if you need to...talk. I'll listen."

He knew it was ironic, given his thing about the mares in his little herd talking too much, but none of them were talking about problems. They were just making noise.
