Edison was a clever b*****d who industrialized the process of inventing. Tesla was the Ur-Mad-Scientist.

Apparently there's a lot I don't know about these guys.
Any suggestions for reading up on them? Uh, aside from Wikipedia. sweatdrop

[[ current mood :: neutral ]] Tesla, of course. A mad scientist with a knack for getting screwed over who was married to a pigeon. What's not to love? [[ current song :: she blinded me with SCIENCE ]]

While both of the esteemed gentlemen in question have much to recommend them, Nikolai Tesla is my preference of the two. He could pull raw power out of thin air!

Tesla, the world's only REAL mad scientist.
And the coil...

As awe inspiring as Tesla's coil is, I must give Edison props. I adore the common use of a light bulb and if I had to pick light bulb over lightning coil... well, light bulb wins. Plus, he helped give way to telephones.

The light bulb wasn't Edison's idea. There were many people at the time working on finding a material that could be used as a filament in a bulb for illumination. Edison was simply the first to make it work.
But without Tesla, we wouldn't have the fluorescent tube, which is a far more energy efficient method of illumination.
A great number of Edison's patents were not his own work in any way, shape, or form, to any degree. Edison had what can only be described as an Invention Factory. He had all these bright young lads working for him, and by contract he took the rights to whatever inventions they came up with.
Which is why I'll go so far as to say Edison was clever, but stack him up against true genius, and he is found wanting.

I think Edison was a wealthy snake. Even when Tesla sued, Edison just wore him down in court until the poor genius died alone and penniless. Come on! Science is great and all, but there's a line of respect for a fellow scientist you shouldn't cross--especially when you already have enough money.
Tesla. Totally.
...I think my brother is Tesla reincarnated. They were born on the same day, and my brother is NUTS about ALL of Tesla's inventions. Hopefully, my brilliant, genius brother won't suffer the same fate.

Tesla was a far better scientist than Edison for many reasons.
He was a mad scientist who was a little...okay very eccentric, with some brilliant but if impossible machines.
Tesla pretty much re-invented the field of electricity and magnetism, and was created for creating the radio.

I vote Tesla. I am backed up by the simple fact that we in modern day use far more of Tesla's work then we do of Edison's. Power lines are AC, power Drills use Tesla Coils, Radios and Cell phone technology is all based on Tesla's work. Also, as an Electrician, I'd like to Say that AC is Safer then DC, for this reason. DC grabs, AC throws. DC causes your muscles to tense and forces you to remain attached to the source, while the alternating nature of AC actually will toss you away from it. It burns faster, but shorter. (Having been Zapped by both, I much prefer AC.)
Tesla and Van Gogh have a lot in common, both were artists, neither was really famous till after they had died
but this is just my understanding of the question.

I shall vote for Tesla, and I shall proclaim why! Tesla was a mad genius. Tesla invented radio. Tesla had a magic white pigeon visit him towards the end of his life... erm...
well i will mention this much, both edison and marconi really screwed tesla over, between patent stealing, and just plain underhandedness... Those two were real jerks.
too bad philo farnsworth wasnt around during said time... sweatdrop though he kinda got the underhanded thing going towards him too... anywho...

Tesla was a genius, Edison a hack. If there is anyone who can dispute this, I would truly like to know how. It is a great tragedy that in most schools, more is taught of Edison than Tesla, when anyone can do a little digging and see which of them really contributed the most to bringing about the modern age.

Well I won't say that Edison wasn't a genius, because he was. Sure, all his patents weren't invented by him per say but he was a genius in industry. Who else thought to bring all these intelligent minds together?
I still prefer Tesla though, he was a mad scientist. They're always more fun. biggrin

Hmm...That's a good point, but I would say that Edison was more of a genius in the same sense as Bill Gates. He was certainly brilliant at marketing and the business side of his work. That much is true. However, just as Gates has Jobs, Edison had Tesla. A man with more raw talent, but less sense in how to apply it. Of course, Jobs seems to be doing a bit better than Tesla, but Apple is still no Microsoft...even though, IMHO, much of Apple's tech is superior. I guess that maybe times just aren't so hard as they were then?
