Happy to have an excuse to get away from the water, Jethro all but sprang away from it, heading over to where the fish had been deposited against the floor. He frowned, watching the small fish flop feebly against the slightly moistened earth. This tiny thing was supposed to be a meal? At least there was more than one of them. Carefully he edged his head towards them, sniffing suspiciously at the food before finally decided that he had no reason to not eat them outside of a strong resistance to trying new foods.
Picking up one of the minnows in his teeth, he tossed it into his mouth, getting the whole moment over as quickly as possible. One fell swoop, he liked to call it. Chewing the fish, he was surprised by the taste. They were surprisingly good for something so small and unappealing in appearance.
“Hey, these aren’t bad!” he chuckled, “where did you learn how to fish for these?” He bit his tongue. Silly Jethro, he wouldn’t remember! He lost his memory. Why didn’t he remember that bit about Fen not remembering? Remember to not talk about remembering.
His head was starting to hurt.
“Sorry,” he said softly, eating the other fish quickly. If he had something in his mouth he wouldn’t have to look like an idiot while speaking.

"No, it's ok," Fenris said simply, grabbing another pawful and depositing them on the shore. (He'd had his fill.) "These I remember learning how to catch. I don't think I knew how before whatever happened to me happened. I had to learn to catch these just recently. I like the river... So I guess it's only natural that I forced myself to learn? It's the bigger ones that I'm not so good at catching yet." He said.
Though, he wondered secretly if he'd once known how to catch fish, and forgot it, only to relearn it... His head hurt from trying to remember. He gave his head a little jerk. "And even if I hadn't remembered it, it's ok. The past is such a vital part of the present, trying to keep it omitted would leave one with very little to talk about." From the way Fenris spoke, one would think that he was far older than he was. The cheeton was very tolerant, and tried to stay on the bright side. "Heck, for all I know..." he said as he waded back into the water, "I could've had a horrible past, maybe I should be grateful that I don't remember..." Though... even a horrible past was a past. He felt he needed one.

Jethro listened to Fen while eating the fish, having a few more before calling himself full and turning to face the smaller animal. He sat down, tilting his head to one side. “I see,” he said, “this memory thing is all really complicated, isn’t it? I wish I could do something to help you, but I really have nothing to offer. I’m not very good at catching the larger fish too… though not because I don’t remember how. I just really don’t like water,” he admitted with a light chuckle.
“You’re right about that. About how important the past is. But… I don’t know… I think there’s plenty of other things to talk about besides the past!” Mostly because he hated talking about his past and really did do his best to avoid it, but still, “recent past, maybe, but you don’t really need to go too far back in my opinion.” He rolled his head about his shoulders, working out a few of the kinks in his neck while he had a moment to. Never a tense animal, he wasn’t used to stressful situations.
Being helpless was indeed stressful to him.
He smiled faintly, trying to be supportive since the other male had just uttered something he actually agreed with. “Yeah, maybe. I know there are a lot of things in my past that I wish I could forget about. Still, it’s gotta be strange to not even remember if you have forgotten something bad or not… I don’t know. Like I said before, it’s all so… complicated.”

"Yeah, you're telling me!" He said with a smile. It was all very complicated... He couldn't help but wonder what he was like before this. Was he someone that he would have liked? Well, at any rate. Perhaps it would be better for him to focus on the here and now. Could he do that for the rest of his life? Who cares, here and now, here and now... he redirected himself in his mind.
"Yeah, you're probably right. We could talk about..." The cheeton looked around at his surroundings. "We could talk about the river, or the fish... Hey, what'd you think of the fish?" He asked, popping a few more in his mouth before deciding that he was quite full. Fenris padded out of the water and leaned back on his haunches on the bank, legs and belly soaking wet and dripping, tufted tail twitching lightly. The sun, though, would quickly dry him off. Once he got his mind off of things, it was really easy to lighten up.

“They were very good!” the male laughed lightly, glad that this strange creature was willing to switch topics and talk about something other than the past, even though this new topic was little more than idle conversation. He didn’t mind, though, as it was at least something to draw their hearts away from something so serious.
Since he couldn’t help with the memory loss, distracting him from it was the best Jethro could offer.
Laughing lightly, he watched the soggy boy. Being wet was fun to see, but he hated experiencing it. Water really sucked, and no one would be able to tell him otherwise. Getting himself a little nearer to the male, Jethro sat down once more, thinking about the fish and what they had tasted like. “I don’t think I’ve ever had fish like that before,” he replied, “they’re very… strange, but in a good way.”
Glancing up, he noted the position of the sun, wondering how much longer he should stick around with the guy. He didn’t want him to be uncomfortable or alone and was willing to stay as long as needed.

"Glad you like!" he said cheerfully. Fen saw the skyward glance that Jethro gave, leading him to ponder what he'd do with the night. The gesture spoke for itself, it was getting late, and both of them needed to seek shelter. "Well, I suppose I'd better be heading off?" he asked. "I have a tree I've been sleeping at the past few nights, so you don't need to worry about me or anything," he said. Hopefully that would put the grey lion's mind at ease a bit.
"You've been a great help to me, Jethro." Fenris said, pulling his gaze from the sun's position and returning it to the lion. "It might not seem like much, but the company was good to have," The cheeton said with a genuine smile.

"I wish there was more I could do for you," said the larger gray lion with a sad sort of smile, "I feel kind of bad." He was a least contented to hear that the company hadn't been that horrible. Still, he could only hope the confused animal would be able to remember his past soon enough. That was really the only thing that would help him feel completely better about their time together. Until then, he would feel like he had failed the boy a little bit.
"Well, I wish you the best," he said, letting his smile become more friendly and warm, "if we meet again, maybe the circumstances will be better. I should probably be heading home right about now. If you need anything, sniff me out. I don't mind."
He turned to leave at that, bidding him goodbye with a nod of his head. It had been an odd encounter, to be sure, but not a bad one.

"Ah, it's alright," Fenris said to avoid discouraging someone who he would consider a friend. "And I will, then, Jethro," he said, taking up the lion's offer. He was pretty sure he'd be fine, he'd managed this long. Fenris returned the nod of the head and turned himself, padding off towards the tree. Little did the green cat know that he hadn't changed much at all from who he was before he lost his memory.
