"No luck?" Branchmoon asked sadly. "Never mind, at least we have some food." She curled up on the ground. "Let's wait for the storm to pass. Then maybe we can find our way back to camp." The smell of the fish was starting to tempt Branchmoon.

"We'll have to wait until after the storm ends." He replied and grabbed two fish from their pile of five. Truthfully he could've eaten them all, but he kept himself under control. Slowly he toseed one of the fish in Branchmoon's direction. "At least we won't starve." He mewed cheerfully.

"Thanks!" Branchmoon meowed. She ate her fish quickly--she hadn't eaten since dawn back at camp. "Should we ration ourselves?" she asked as soon as she had finished her first fish. "I mean, in case the storm gets worse? How will we be able to find our way back? What if we can't get back?" In the face of the storm, the normally sensible Branchmoon was starting to panic. It had been a very, very long time since there was a storm this bad.

Fleetingwaves sighed. "There's no trace back home.We should just go to sleep and figure out a way in the morning. There's nothing we can do now." He was assessing this situation rather well he thought to himself. Normally his outgoing self would leave it to the other cat. But, in Branchmoon's state she was in no position to be pitching out ideas. Looking at her distressed he shivered.

"I'm sorry!" Branchmoon croaked. "I just...I hate being lost." She sniffled. "I'm sorry," she repeated. She was tired and wet, but at least she had someone else and she was no longer hungry. She closed her bronze eyes and allowed herself to drift off to sleep as the storm poored down around their scant shelter.

"It's ok." Fleetingwaves responded. Slowly, he too drifted off into sleep.
Sunlight filtered through his eyelids and Fleetingwaves awoke with a yawn. He expected to find himself at camp, but was out in the wilds. Oh yeah... He thought to himself. Getting up with a groan he decided to make breakfast count. He went on the look for mushrooms and nuts.
A while had gone by and Fleetingwaves returned to the shelter finding Branchmoon still asleep. Quietly he sliced open two of the fish then cut the last one in half. Delicately Fleetingwaves dropped some mushrooms and nuts on each fish. It was complete. A nice meal to start off their journey back home.
Fleetingwaves placed half of their pile of fish in front of Branchmoon's nose and began munching on his one and half a fish.

Woods. She was wandering aimlessly through them, searching for a familiar scent...not camp--Fleetingwaves. Where was he? Why had he left? The forest was getting wetter and wetter. Soon it was a paw's height deep...a leg...the shoulder. She was drowing in water, and the current was dragging her down! No matter how hard she swam, she couldn't escape the current, she was under, just her nose was above the swirling, tempestuous dark...Desperately she inhaled through her nose for her last breath. The last she would ever breathe smelled of...
Fish and mushrooms?!
With a jolt, Branchmoon woke from her nightmare. It was morning, she and Fleetingwaves were in the place they had sheltered from the storm. He had put mushrooms and nuts on top of the remains of their fish. Gratefully Branchmoon gulped on her fish and a half. "Thanks," Branchmoon murmured. "I was in the middle of a very bad dream."

Fleetingwaves smiled as she woke up. Now he wouldn't be only one awake. He shivered a little then returned to eating his fish. They would have to keep up their strength for the trip back home.

"Looks like the storm's cleared up," Branchmoon meowed encouragingly. "Shall we get going to camp?" She glanced around. The forest was still soggy, masking all scent, and she didn't recognize any of their surroundings. "Oh no," she moaned. "Fleetingwaves, I think we're lost! I don't recognize this place at all, what'll we do?" She began to panic.

Fleetingwaves sighed. "We accomplished that yesterday." He replied firmly. Now we just have to trust our instincts and hope that they lead us back to camp." He purred reassuringly to her and started to pad forward, trying to remember anything from the night before.

Branchmoon nodded. "You're right, Fleetingwaves. I was just...overreacting." She padded out of their shelter and took a few sniffs. No recognizable scent...she swallowed, trying to remain calm. Taking a few deep breaths, she thought of something. "I think...I think we should start going towards the sun," she meowed. "We were on the streambank yesterday, and that's east of the camp. We tried heading back west to camp; if we overshot it, we should go east until we reach the river. We can take our bearings then."

Fleetingwaves nodded and was glad for her to be calm again. His nose twitched as he tried to sniff out the scent of salt. It was very weak, but he smelt some and headed towards it twitching his tail for her to follow.

((Why salt?))
Branchmoon followed Fleetingwaves quietly. She found that Fleetingwaves's calm actions made her feel better. She could almost accept the quiet, still-damp forest in all its unfamiliarity.

(( Cuz there's salt on the rocks by the river. o3o ))
Fleetingwaves was glad that she calmed. Under pressure he couldn't think straight. The scent got stronger with each step they took and Fleetingwaves looked up then down again quickly, hiding the dismayed look on his face. It was going to rain soon. He just prayed that Branchmoon hadn't followed his example and looked up.

Branchmoon sniffed at the air. Salt. Dimly she remembered her apprenticeship where she ate a fish on a rock during a border patrol...Of course...the river rocks are salty...we'll find the river soon! Happily she trotted next to Fleetingwaves, the dew wetting her paws.
Odd...shouldn't it be warmer by now? It must be past dawn, there should be sunlight... Branchmoon looked up and gulped. Storm clouds. Not again! "Er...Fleetingwaves? Could we perhaps...hurry up?" She decided not to alarm him by mentioning the storm that was coming up. "I mean, we've been gone awhile, so, uh...yeah..." She glanced at the clouds again.
