Sarah smiled as finally they started to debate the topic. Even though she'd asked for elemental, it seemed several were on the side of the arcane. "Well, both types can perform the same spells. With elemental, you'd have to think on how the elements play into the effect you're wanting. But it's the easiest to learn. After all, the elements are everywhere. Arcane can often be harder for a beginning spell caster to understand fully."
She turned to Fleur. "It's not really that it uses that much more energy, but that it's just... a different style. Elemental is more efficient at energy usage. So the question is, which is better overall?" Here she turned to Nibal. "So you're saying arcane would be better overall. Anyone want to say differently?" She looked at the class as a whole.

Roulette had been silent for the last few minutes, scribbling down haphazard notes and wondering if he should say anything. He had drawn down the two types, with three branches coming off of each topic. This was his first magic class, which meant a lot of it was new information to him; scratch that - all of it was new.
Chewing the purple mechanical pencil thoughtfully, he looked around the classroom, willing himself to speak.
"Would we be learning elemental magic as a whole?" Roule paused, trying to think of a better way to phrase his question. "As in, would we be taught the powers of multiple elements?"
He was unsure about the answer himself; arcane seemed all well and good, but if there was a possibility of mastering more than one element, in combat, it seemed just as - if not more convenient - to adapt the spell to its surroudings.

Lazilly the mantis girl wrote down some notes, mostly so she looked like she was paying attention. She did find it ...kinda interesting. But lectures always were boring to her..her mind tended to drift elsewhere during the class. She snapped back when she heard Roulette speak.
Which was better overall? Hell is she knew.
"Wouldn't it depend on the person which was better? Kinda like how my brother has problems using magic in the first place...so.." She trailed off not sure what her point was. But hey at least she looked like she was being active and interested.

Sarah thought for a moment on Roule's question, then shook her head. "No. While some of you may learn some elemental magic, it's actually rare to find someone who can handle it well. Plus, if you are able to learn it, you only focus upon one element. So, you'd either be a water or a fire or earth elemental magic user."
She glanced over at Zyanya. "Which ties in with what you were saying. Most people have to learn arcane magic because they cannot use elemental. And, even if you could use it, it wouldn't be the only thing you'd learn, most likely. Unless you wanted to only stick to that one element."
"But, as to my question, the answer is really 'Neither'. Even if you were able to use both types of magic, it would be up to the person on which they would prefer. Some lean towards elemental to conserve energy while others tend to prefer arcane for its versitlity."
She paused there and looked at the class, smiling slightly at them. "But you were thinking, and that is what I wanted! Magic isn't just something you can memorize the words and actions for. You've got to think on what would best work in the situation. You've got to think constantly and adapt to your surroundings."
"Any questions?"

Trailing a swirl around her note book she looked up boredly at the teacher, lectures always bored her. So you could choose either method of using magic...so what was the point..? It seemed like Arcane was better suited in the long run even if it used more energy.
"When will we get to actually try this stuff out? Do we have tin incant things or such?" She asked her bored and slightly annoyed tone obvious.

Nibal glanced up. "I thought that magic was about memorizing words and motions to do spells... That's what you always see in movies and shows and stuff... Are they wrong?"

Fleur twitched his ears and tapped his pencil thoughtfully on his notebook after writing down everything he just heard. If elemental magic was really so difficult to use, why bother when arcane was easier and could get the job done just as well? He started to ask that, but he closed his mouth when the other two children spoke, not wishing to overwhelm the instructor. Instead, he looked to the two who had spoken then back to the instructor.

Sarah raised an eyebrow at the girl. "Not today. Today is learning the basics of magic types. We won't be performing any spells." Mainly because Sarah couldn't do spellwork herself. This kind of stuff, she could teach. The practical? Nope.
The woman turned to the frog boy. "No, they're correct, but there is more to magic than just that. Timing is important as well as assessing the situation. If you use a powerful spell that wipes out everyone in sight and leaves you drained, you're vulnerable. What if the group had a reserve that comes up on you? You have to be able to adapt. What if you're good at one spell, let's say a fireball. Well, you can't just rush into battle throwing fireballs everywhere. What if your foe is immune to fire? Brains are important in magic as well."

Upon seeing an opening, Fleur raised a hand to ask his question, "You mentioned earlier that most people focus on just one element - why? Is it really that hard to control it, or do the different elements cancel each other out and make it impossible to use opposing elements? Like...if you're good at water, does that mean you can't use fire at all?"

Zyanya looked over to Nibal and rolled her eyes. She traced another doodle in her not book. She didn't use elemental magic so this was pretty useless to her. Nor did she have any real interest in getting to learn elemental. She used enhancement types of spells, stuff to make her faster..yes she wanted the speed and the power to destroy her opponents quickly and efficiently.
Though if she could learn multiple spells that could prove interesting as well. Though being immune to spells in general would be in her best interest.

Sarah smiled at the skunk boy. "That's a good question and the answer is: Because they have to. Most people who practice elemental magic can only use one type of element. Occasionally, you'll find someone who can use two types, but they have a harder time matching the level of someone of the same element who only uses that element. Dual-typing has a drawback in that both elements are weaker in power than someone who is fully that element."
"And, you're right in your example. Someone with two elemental types would not have opposing elements. So no fire and water wielding mage. At least not elemental." The woman glanced at her notes, then at the clock. Finally her gaze fell upon the class. "That's all I have to cover today. Are there any more questions?"

"J-Just one," Fleur stammered, hoping he was not out of line for asking so many questions. His last magic class left very little room for questioning, so this was unusual for him. "How do you know which element you're good at? Do you just have a natural affinity to one particular element, or do you get to choose which one you want to focus on?"

"It's a natural affinity," Sarah answered, smiling. "Many say that there's a link between your element and your personality. Some say that depending on when you're born has an affect. No one really knows, but they like to guess."
The woman glanced around at the class. "Well, I guess that is all for today. Class is dismissed."
