Jester paused mid roll, and looked quizzically at the fledgling then hooted in amusement. "A fantastic question my dear! Well firstly, it was great fun, but more importantly the once brown bug was now bright red in color." Jester righted himself and leaned down once more to be on eye level with the fledglings.

"You see the brown bug had seen red bugs and yellow bugs walk right past that spider!" Jester was amused and flattered by the fledglings enthusiasm, and continued.

"So after changing his color he made his way carefully at first towards the tasty top leaves. When he got near where the spider lived..." Jester paused for great effect.

Bumble laughed inwardly at the other fledgling. Strange question, but he didn't say anything out loud, the bard would answer. That bug was definitely clever! Using disguise was a great strategy, but would it fool the spider? Bumble gazed up at the bard expectantly. But could it really be so easy to just get by like that? "Did they fight? Did the spider find out? Did he make it by?"

Happy to know that she wasn't going to be scolded by her little outburst, Fable looked back up at the bard. Now that she knew what the berries could do, she made a mental note to herself. Maybe it could come in useful in the future.

Hooting softly Fable waited with excited anticipation.

"Instead of being carefully quiet, the now red bug walked right past the spider. He could feel his legs shaking as he walked eyeing the spider. The big black spider eyed him right back. Then something amazing happened!" Jester opened his wings wide to accent just how amazing it was.

"The spider turned the other way. The little brown bug had done it, he moved right past the spider and up to those tasty leaves at the top of the tree and ate and ate and ate."

Jester sat down more in the nest, "Now this is a very old story, do you know why?" he asked the fledglings.

Fable jumped back with surprise, as the bard spread his wings. She couldn't believe it! How on earth could the bug get past the clever spider, maybe the spider was not that clever after all. Then a thought came to her.

"The bug should be careful and not get too comfortable eating all those tasty treats, " she said and looked at the other fledgling to see if he agreed.

At the bard's question Fable replied back happily, "Why is this story so old?" She flapped her wings enthusiastically.

"The spider might catch on!" Bumble nodded, flinching at the wing opening in case a wing strayed too close to his head.

Perhaps the spider was just stupid. A big bully guarding his treasure. Why did the brighter bugs get better treatment? That was something he would have to ponder later on. He wanted to ask but there was a question pending already. "How come?"

Jester gestured to his dyed green spirals, "The story is old because we do the same thing the little bug did, except we don't do it to fool others. At least most of us don't. The reason the red bugs and yellow bugs got past the spider is because those colors were a warning to the spider that those bugs would taste yucky. And that is why the brown bug dyed himself red."

Jester closed his wings and waited, his story now finished. Watching the fledglings carefully hoping their reaction would be a good one.

Fable cocked her head a little puzzled by the ending of the story. Thinking to herself, despite her confusion, she had to admit that the bug was quite the trickster. Fable furrowed her brows in thought and then said "I guess both bug and spider were clever. The bug for his disguise and the spider for being cautious."

Then another thought popped into her head, "So...." she paused for a moment and then said slowly, "because we like to dye our feathers the scary creatures in the forest think we taste yucky?"

"Oh interesting," Bumble said quietly, thinking about the story. Smart bug, very smart. So bright was yucky, but some berries seemed colorful and bright but were still good for them...not the same thing maybe! His eartufts perked at the question, and he watched the Bard for an answer. That, that was a smart question. What of a Sentinel who didn't want to dye, would they be hunted down silently? Didn't sound right. He shifted on his feet, waiting.

"Well..." Jester thought for a moment perhaps he needed to explain further, "Yes and no, we change our appearance because of our own likes or to state something about ourselves. But the bug changed his color because if he didn't he would have been eaten. Don't worry weather or not you choose to dye your feathers when your older is all up to you. And I promise if you choose to stay as you are, nothing will eat you. Still for bugs brighter is usually yucky though." Jester clicked his beak to put firm emphasis on his story.

He wondered if it was just above their level of comprehension. Or perhaps this batch of fledglings was just more curious then the last. Either way he was impressed by the questions the fledglings asked.

Fable took a deep sigh of relief, she was so happy that she wouldn't have to color herself the color of the rainbow. Maybe a fancy design would be better.

Smiling she rustled her wings a little bit and spoke, "So the point of the story is to warn sentinels not to eat bright bugs, cause they could be dangerous? We need to be careful like the spider?"

"Or just poisonous for the spider?" Bumble thought out loud. He'd never want to have to paint himself silly to avoid predators. Then again painting yourself is bound to make you more visible! Pointless! He put that thought into words. "Bright colors attract predators!"

Jester smiled, "Your both right. Bright colors do tell certain animals what is good and what is bad. For spiders seeing bright colored bugs tells them to stay away, the bug would taste very bad if the spider ate it. For us bright colors can sometimes attract attention," gesturing to himself, "I'm a good example of that."

Such lively fledglings, Jester enjoyed their company greatly.
