He winced, hating that she was thinking that... Hating to hear those words come out of her mouth... He so didn't want to hear that... Didn't even want to think about it. And yet she continued, telling him what was good and honest and respectable to do... Well, he'd already proved he wasn't any of those things, hadn't he? Pretty much beyond a doubt, one would think. But for Halia, he wanted to be those things. Wanted to be someone she would be proud to call her's... To introduce to her family. Wait.. Wait... Wait. She loved him? Still? After all he had done? He gaped at her, sure he looked like a fool with his mouth hanging open and his wings trailing the ground, but he was shocked damnit! Had she really said all that? Had she really meant it? "Say that again." He begged in a soft whisper, wings fluttering, eyes blazing blue. "Please... Say that again. Tell me you still love me after all of this, even though I don't deserve you..." He paced over to her, reaching out and rubbing her cheek. "I am not going to ask her... And I'd be honored if you let me ask you again... I love you, unworthy though I am.." He stepped back, bowing his head.

"Even if you ripped the heart from my chest, I would still love you Aureate..." Halia whispered softly, stepping forward as Aureate stepped back. "I love you," she repeated, more firmly as she laid her neck across his shoulders, squeezing her eyes shut to hold back tears. The pain of his betrayal still throbbed like a fresh wound, but she wouldn't lose him...whoever this Dahlia was, she didn't have that much of a hold of him. "Ask whatever you will of me...I will answer."

Aureate turned away for a moment, heart twinging at her words. If he ripped her heart out? He would sooner tear out his own, and offer it to her with his dieing breath... He had done wrong, had made mistakes in his life... But nothing like this. He wanted to make it right. "I would ask you to share your life with me, knowing I am not worthy of you... I would ask you stayed with me, loved me as I loved you... I am sorry that I betrayed your trust, and I would ask for that again... It is your choice what you give me."

Halia stared at him a moment, disbelief in her expression. Even after this, he truly loved her enough to wish to be her mate? "I would be more than happy to, Aureate, you know that...when you told me you were to be a father, I was terrified. Terrified that you had decided you no longer loved me, that you didn't wish to be my mate after all, that you would rather another loved you and bore your foals." Her eyes closed a moment. "I may not be the one to give you your firstborn...but I would gladly be your mate."

He felt like soaring right up to the sun and singing at the top of his lungs. She'd said yes! She still wanted him! She still loved him! She said yes! YESYESYES! He reared, whinnying happily, then returned to all fours, prancing around her and stroking her back with his wings. "You have no idea how happy you make me... How much I love you. I am sorry my firstborn is not yours... But if you will give me the rest of your life as I give you mine, I will do all I can to make it up to you." He nuzzled her cheek, rumbling deeply.

Halia leaned into her love's--her mate's, now--touch, doing her best to smile for him. She was truly happy that he was hers--no, overjoyed...but it still hurt. She would not push him away, she would be strong, but that didn't mean that she couldn't hope that he would be sensitive to her feelings and aware that these foals of his would remain a tender subject for some time. Well, she thought she could tolerate the foals. "I don't want to see her, by the way," she stated abruptly. "The foals I can take. Maybe I can even learn to love them too. But gods help me...if I see her..." She pulled away slightly, looking Aureate directly in his eyes. "Do you understand? If you see her again, warn her that she should stay away from the both of us if she knows what's good for her."

Aureate smiled gently, leaving his wing draped over her back as he nuzzled her cheek. The thought of the lives before his foals made his heart ache... They would not understand... "Most likely, you will only see one." He said softly... The one he himself would take, and raise... If there were more than two, she might see the third on occassion... But no doubt one would stay with their dam, one their sire... "I will tell her you do not wish to meet her." Aureate agreed softly, nodding. "But the foals, their fates are yet to be determined... So..." He shrugged. There was no way of knowing, yet...

"The foals are not to blame," Halia agreed, flicking her long tail against her hocks. "But I do not trust that the same is so for this...this Dahlia. And if she gets it into her head to pursue more than just your foals...gods help those foals, for they'll be motherless whether they deserve such a fate or not!" The venom in her own voice surprised her, but she meant every word. Aureate was hers now, and no 'friend' was going to take him from her. "Truly, once they are grown I would prefer that she left both of our lives for good."
