I always say I'm Jamaican first because I beleive my culture makes me more of who I am rather than my race. Yes, I'm black but I'll be damned if I ever get called an African American, especially because I live in Canada. I don't like that I'll be automatically referred to an African American once I step over the border because it isn't me. Isn't that term a little.. wrong? And what about the white africans who happen to live in America? Are they not African Americans as well? neutral

Arias Delmar

Just in case some people dont know, Black is a Race, Not an ethnic group, an ethnic group is a group of distinct people within a race. Haitians are Black, Jamaicans are black, Trini's are black, and most tribes in africa are black.

So claiming black as an ethnic group is wrong.

uhmm since when were all Trini's and Jamaicans all black? I don't know about Haitians, but I know more coolie (indian) trini's than blacks. And my father is 100% Jamaican but is half black and white. So.. yeah :S

But you are right about how blacks should not be referred to as an ethnic group.. it's a race afterall.

I can't speak for anyone, but I say I'm 'just black' because I don't identify with any other race (and even if I did, I doubt I'd be accepted). Yeah, I have 'white' in me, but it's not like it matters. So I'm 'just black'. Nothing special. I don't know exactly where my ancestors are from, other than as slaves, so that's it.

I believe this has been a problem for most Afro-Latinos.

Im not black so in truth I can't know what each of you are feeling about the subject of being grouped as "Black" (Whether it bothers you or not)

Most folks tend to refer themselves to their main heritages instead of the colors of their skin. IE one of my Favorite Cuban Singers from the Buena Vista Social Club Ibrahim Ferrer is one of the blackest men I've seen and yet he refers himself not as Black but as Cuban.

Its preferrence for the person themselves really of what they want to be seen as.

It's all well and good that Haitians and Jamaicans and such can give an ethnic, but you seem alittle pissed off that blacks in America call ourselves black(that's the way I'm reading it). To me you seem alittle out of touch with our situation. It's all fine and dandy that you get to claim Haitian, but African Americans don't have a name to accurately and quickly sum up our ethinic. Black is a race not an ethnic, and African American makes it seem like we're recent immigrants, Negro and coloured are just as "bad" as black, and the N word certainly won't do. American is fine but not if you want to accuratly describe a person. So what the crap CAN we use to describe ourselves. Sorry we can't come up with some fancy little moneker(sp?) like everybody else but it's not our fault.

Sorry if I come off mean, it's late and I can't go to bed.

Hundreds of years ago my ancestors came from Africa; I don't know from where or exactly what part. My background along with other black or African Americans is multiracial. I use the term black because here in America black means African American, usually. Black refers to my culture, ethnicity, and race here. It is used just like the term white eg. black men/ white men. I don't prefer using African American white Americans don't use European American. And I believe people who come from different nations to America and have a problem with being coined black or white have a right to define their own ethnicity and say they are Haitian American, Jamican American, Italian american etc.

Call me apple juice
I personally dont care where my first roots were from,

Thats your business. Some of us actually do care, and want to learn.

Hurts my heart when my people say they don't care. Why is that the attitude today? sad Have pride!

I personally detest being confused with African americans.

I know you're Haitian and all, but why do you detest being confused with us? I'm appalled. Do you not like African Americans, or something? rolleyes

To be honest I just say I am black just because it is the easiest thing to do in that situation. Plus I am not from the country of Africa my ancestors may be but I don't know even no that for sure so I say I am black. It is simple and it gets the point across.

If I say I'm anything but black I'll betray the race I'm loyal towards..

I am, however my loyalties lie towards my family.. even though my family are mixies.. The underdogs are the blackside... and I relate more towards the underdogs.

Like others have said...I say i'm black. I don't know my ancestory aside from the fact that obviously I had ancestors from Africa. But the way I see it is I have no identification with Africans, the only thing we have in common is our darker skin. So I don't like calling myself african american. Plus I'm white and native american as well...so calling myself african american, just doesn't suit me.

I call it from where I was born. I either say I'm black or that I'm American. Not African American or anything relating to my ancestors. If that were the case, I'd have to dig out my European heritage as well. I actually dislike the term African American due to the fact that I wasn't born, raised, lived or visited Africa in my life.

I think it makes sense if you know you are some type of black but not your exact ethnic group. Some people can't identify exactly what they are.

any thoughts?
