Somebody is stuck up. lol But yeah I'd be one of those people in the middle.

I know sheet and tab, but for most songs I play (metal) I just look up tabs. But actually have the time I play random s**t off the top of my head.

Yes I know plenty of chords and Yes I know a few scales.

Now I don't play guitar to "get chicks" or any of that silly stuff, I learned guitar because I wanted to.

That's all. Sorry if I sounded like a c**k clencher.

to summarise the thread so far:

Pretentious douche...
People Angry at pretentious douche...
No one has used the word 'douche' yet...

Now the important things have been summed up; I understand what you meant, but you have your ideas muddled up. You've confused technique and study material with attitude and drive. One of my friends I know can sight read music, nearly as well as me, in fact he taught me. why does he suck now? Because he does nothing but enough sweeping and shredding to look good enough. His ATTITUDE is lazy, but his MATERIAL stands up to any traditional school of learning known... in the woooorld (Reference only the English would get).

The points been made, but I just love hammering nails into coffins, don't you?

Fact is, if you were to study standard notation and tab, you would learn that, as a majority, Tab works better for modern styles (modern is considered in context to musical history, i.e post 1900). Obviously a combination of the two is best, but if you have to choose, Tab.

P.S notation, tab, ear, sight read, chord chart, whatever. *shrugs* Bonbon?

Thats a bunch of bull.

I dont know notes, but I know tabs. I've been playing for about 6 years like that. And alot of other people have too. I never had a guitar teacher (excludes the online guitar "teachers").

The group that you described that knew sheet music, just took the time to read it and stuff, but they are no different from people that only use tabs. Just because they know sheet music doesn't mean they are better players.

What you are saying is like a short/skinny/unskilled person knowing all the rules to play basketball can probably play better than a person from "da hood". (sorry that kind of sounds like a seriotype, but just stick to the main idea here. o.k.?)

I've gotta admit, I think a little less of guitarists that don't know their theory, scale or how to read sheet music.

It's mainly 'cause it's hard to have a jam on a jazz standard with someone who doesn't know that stuff, and it's frustrating to communicate musical ideas with someone who can't speak the language.

Hahaha! funniest reply so far.

I can read sheet music. But only when I play the piano. It's like my brain compartmentalizes the sheet music for piano and the tabs for guitar. Lol. If I wanted to figure out how to play sheet music on a guitar, it'd take me way longer. What's wrong with tabs anyways?
