“All sorts!” Cecelia exclaimed cheerfully. “Hopscotch, tag, ball, anything where I get to move is fun.” She though for a moment, “I also like to explore, or pretend I’m a spy or a princess, or a princess spy. I like to pretend a lot.” She nodded happily.

Delilah gave this list careful consideration. Finally, she sighed. "I don't know about spies but I'm already a princess," she answered. "Uncle Kiet tells me that every day and he would never lie to me." She paused again. "But I guess it's okay to pretend to be a princess, too."

Cecelia stamped her foot in a very un-princess like manner. “Why do YOU get to be a real princess?” She demanded. “I wanna be a REAL princess.” Crossing her arms, she put on her very best I-want-it-so-I’m-going-to-pout-face. It worked wonders on her mother.

Unfortunately, it did not work one iota on the teal-haired girl and she merely regarded Cecelia evenly. "Because I am," she answered simply. "Because Uncle Kiet says so. You have to ask your mama if you're a princess. She would know."

This seemed to make Cecelia stop and think. “Mama’s busy a lot.” She said slowly. “Maybe I did. . . did something nice for her she’d tell me I was a princess?” Cecelia knew that when pouting didn’t work, her next best weapon was to try and be as sweet and adorable as she possibly could.

Delilah nodded firmly, clearly approving of the direction the other girl's mind was going. "Very true," she agreed. "In the stories, princesses are always kind and wise and beautiful. You need to be so sweet that the birds and animals and plants want to help you." She reached out to touch the nearest flower and it turned slightly into her touch. She smiled. "They know."

“Who know?” Cece asked, fascinated with the entire princess talk. “Princesses?” She was thrilled, the moment she got home she was gonna make mama tell her every princess story she knew. Well, after Cece did something nice for mama that was. Her desire to be a princess filled her, be she knew—just knew – that the moment she was called a princess she’d get a sparkly pink dress and crown and the whole deal.

Delilah looked over her shoulder at the other girl and it was straight out of Disney, big eyes and all. She smiled again. "The creatures and the flowers," she answered. Then she rocked back on her heels and turned to face the other girl once more. "So you have to learn. I don't know about your mother but I think mothers almost always like good behavior."

Cece pondered this latest development for a moment, “good behavior” always meant not begging for thing, or pouting, or yelling when company was over. It was hard. Could she possibly manage it just for the sake of being a princess? She hoped so.
“Okay!” She agreed. “I’ll do my very best to be good for my mommy, and listen to the plants and stuff. . .” She paused. “Will I get a fancy dress?” She wondered.

"I should think so." Delilah smiled faintly and nodded before dropping her hands to take hold of her own skirt. She spread the soft, flowing fabric a bit and sketched a curtsey. "A princess needs a pretty dress."

Cecelia nodded vigorously. “And pretty shoes, and singing bird friends, and. . .” She tailed off. “My mommy’s going to be done with work soon, maybe I should go look for her?” She thought. “I want her to see right away what a good, pretty, princess I am!”

Delilah nodded solemnly. Then she paused and tilted her head to one side; with her bright eyes, she looked like a curious bird. "Please be careful when walking," she said and it sounded a bit like an order. "I would like to see you later and find out if you've become a princess."
Then she offered a faint, crooked little smile. "I'm just going to go and talk to the roses. Goodbye." With that cryptic (and half-crazy) statement, Delilah turned on her heel and strode off, soon disappearing amongst the flowers.
