Althalus listened to his beautiful lady, his own smile growing at the sight of her coloured nose. It tickled him pink to see her so receptive to his gestures, to know that he caused that sweet blush. Ah, but the flower perched delicately upon her ear was only the tip of the iceburg. . . . There was nothing he could deny the mare before him, nothing he wouldn't offer, wouldn't give. His attention, his affection, his heart would be hers for as long as she wished and he would do what he could to make sure lacked in nothing.
At Nivriti's words, the stallion felt his own nose darkening as her implication was not at all over looked. He chuckled, dipping his head in an almost coy manner as his bangs fell over his silver gaze; who was he to deserve such compliments? Althalus held a healthy dose of self-confidence, certainly, but for some reason he felt completely undeserving of Nivriti's affections and praise. There was something about the mare that captivated him and terrified him all at once. . . .
She was special and quite unlike any mare he'd met.
Glancing back up at her, giving his head a little shake to remove the hair from his gaze the stallion knew not how to respond. Only she could cause his tongue to fail, his witty remarks to silence. . . what a spell she'd cast over him indeed!
"It's the absolute least I can give, darling fair," he remarked, glancing from the flower back to her delicate features. As far as he were concerned, such radiance was nothing compared to her own and he was quite sure nothing in any reaches of the world would ever match.
Offering her a gentle nuzzle, she then spoke of her hopes. Her dreams. . . and not just hers but theirs! Of . . . . . of family. Children. Though it surprised him the stallion gave no show of it. Family was something he thought of but it often lingered around his parents and siblings. He wanted what his father and mother had, a love that ran deep and true. . . . Someone to spend the rest of his days with, someone he could call his own, to love, cherish and protect.
Love was something he thought of . . . But family? Children of his own? The thought wasn't completely foreign to the male - he did hope to rear a family all the same. But never had he thought perhaps such a future wasn't so far off as it seemed. . . . Already he had found a beautiful most wonderful companion, one he hoped he might keep . . . one who had already bewitched his heart. Should such affections stay . . . might this mean someday his own family might be lurking on the horizon?
"I do." He started softly, resuming their walk side by side. "I think frequently of my mother, father, siblings . . . of the environement in which we were raised and the affections still present between each other. I couldn't see my life without my own family and can only hope someday I shall be so blessed." Some mares and stallions were object to foals, to family . . . but Althalus was not that sort of stallion.
It pleased him greatly to know that Nivriti felt the same.

She smiled at Althalus; 'You make me blush, I make you blush. I think to an outsider we might seem overly sweet to one another. But I don't care.' she flicked him gently with a wing tip as they carried on with their journey, taking every care not to move her head too suddenly or risk dislodging the floral gift.
Nivriti found herself falling quiet, just looking at the stallion beside her. As they walked, she found herself even more grateful for whatever spirit had a hand in them meeting on that day by the Lake.
She felt that as time progressed, the longer that she was with him, that she wanted to speak from her heart, let him know with a few words all that she felt. It was the one word that was important though. Four little letters, and it explained all that she felt more words couldn't. She still wasn't sure if it was too soon for such a confession though.
'You do? And you have a mare in mind for who you will have all your lovely children with? You will be a wonderful father after all.'
It felt a little like she was fishing for further compliments, or even a slightly silly question after so much had been expressed so far - however nothing was certain - this was what the journey was all about after all was it not? Not just to see his home, and possibly his family. But to find out for sure if they could make their feelings and hopes into something tangible..for always as she wanted. She still felt a measure of uncertainty, not yet completely believing that this wonderful soul liked her in the same way that she liked him.

Althalus felt his own nose deepen in colour a bit at her words, and he gave a small snort of amusement. Silver eyes glittering with delight and mischief, he glanced back over to his golden eyed sweetheart and offered her a gentle nuzzle against her cheek. "Let an outsider look on, m'dear, and let them see such sweetness. Let them know that I have the most beautiful mare to spoil with affection." Such was the plan and promise he hoped to keep forever, should she allow it. What he wouldn't do for her. . . all Nivriti had to do was but ask. Say the word and he'd be there, announce her fears and he'd valiantly conquer them.
Step by step, moment by moment Althalus found himself falling deeper for the young mare. The way the sunlight dappled her body as it fell through the canopy overhead; the way the breeze tickled her hair and how bright her golden gaze truly was. . . More and more he wanted never to part from her side, to protect her from all that was wrong in the world, and to make sure she always wore a smile.
This went deeper than friendship, was much more substantial than lust, and yet kept him wanting more. . . Without even realizing it Althalus had given up on his selfish wanderings and had offered Nivriti a lifetime wit him. He hadn't exactly spoken such words but the fact she was with him, the fact that she was here now and he couldn't imagine journeying without her or leaving her behind told him that such a sacrifice was true.
Was this . . . .
It very well could be.
But he wasn't going to push such words, not yet. Not until the time was right and he understood that she wouldn't be so easily frightened. Their relationship was so new he was rather overwhelmed by how swiftly his life had changed. . . but there was no regret. His only concern was that he hadn't met Nivriti sooner, had had to wait this long to meet her and be blessed.
Glancing over at her, Althalus smiled and didn't hesitate in his answer. He had to tred carefully, surely, but Nivriti couldn't possibly believe that he would stray so soon. "Forgive me for being so blunt in speaking, m'lady fair," he started, "But there was a time in my life where such a dream held no particulars. There was a time I understood what I wanted but had little thought in who. . . " For a time he had often saw Caely in such a position, had found he had fancied his gentle and most dear friend.
But now he knew that such a place was not meant for the spotted mare. Oh no . . . he had found someone who fit him perfectly, someone who was to be more than just a friend, more than just a lady fair. "But I must say, that it hasn't been until late that such a position has been filled. . ." Tossing her another glance, hoping she wasn't panicked by the insinuation, he continued, "You'd like her, you know. She has the most beautiful golden eyes, and the most charmingly sweet smile. She's breathtaking to behold and leaves me breathless with every touch. . . And oh, if only you knew how her words stirred me. If only you knew how much I truly, truly cared, if only you knew the affections that run deep in my heart for her. . . " He offered her a soft nuzzle, voice dropping a bit, ". . for you."

For a moment, as Althalus spoke, she felt that maybe she'd gone too far. What if her questioning, and their talk of feelings had made him realise that there was another that would be blessed to be his partner, through life and through family?
Such was her insecurities still, even after the gentle touches, the words, his compliments and the gift of the flower, that she still doubted..not his words, nor his looks but that he could truly be meaning her when he talked. Stop it! her mind scolded her thoroughly, and she gave herself an inward shake. She had to stop doubting, because if he felt she was unsure he might back away and she didn't want that. Would never want that.
'I think I was the same.' Nivriti admitted. 'I knew I wanted the same as my mother, she was so lucky in finding my father. I guess I didn't think I would be as blessed.' she smiled at Althalus, falling quiet as he continued to talk.
She wasn't panicked at the insinuation, just panicked that it might not be herself that had filled the position. If she could have crossed her hooves she would have done, and over and over she thought Me, me, let it be me! She listened with a dull roar in her ears, the beat of her heart having gotten so loud she was surprised he could not hear it.
'Althalus..' she said his name, softly, with warmth. 'I love you.'
Maybe it was too soon, she didn't care anymore. After all that he had said. If she didn't let that out, she felt that she would go a little crazy.

I love you. The words rang out and seemed to reverberate around the sunset stallion, causing his own heart to skip a beat. . . . or three. She . . . she what? Nivriti hadn't actually - - - she hadn't- - - couldn't - - - - Oh gods yes she had! Silver eyes went wide for a moment, shock and surprise colouring his expression and painting his yellow nose a deep red.
Love. . .
LOVE.
And the final nail had been pounced firmly in to place. Such a word summed up everything he felt, everything he wanted to say, he wanted to explain. Such a definition, though frequently abused, seemed absolutely proper here and now. A sense of relief seemed to fall away from his shoulders, and his churning stomach settled. If she had said it surely that meant he could say something too? Right?
Wait. . . speak. Say. Words. It occurred to the stallion that he'd stopped walking, stopped breathing and was now staring only at the dark furred mare beside him. Oh gods, with mouth ajar he probably looked ridiculous and she probably was wondering what his problem was!
"Oh, Nivriti. . . . " He choked, words escaping him as his voice threatened to crack. The emotions that welled up from his soul were close to undescribable and a new fire struck him. If only he could offer her his heart, fully, completely. "Do you truly?" He questioned, stepping forward, his gaze intense and surprisingly desperate.
She'd said it once, yes, but . . . she had to have meant it! Reaching down, he embraced the mare with the most tender of touches, wrapping his neck around her own and refusing to yield the embrace. Now this moment was to be cherished higher than any other. . . . This fragile, tender scene that might never be replayed. She had said it. . . and now was his turn. No need to keep the lady waiting. "Darling Nivriti. . . my beauty of the sky. . . I . . . I love you too. For now and for always." And that was a promise he would never break. Ever.
Come hell and high water, come the meanest kalona to rip him to pieces, come the most dashing of stallions to steal her away she would be his forever more. Even if her own love burned out like a candle in a nights wind. . . . he knew without a doubt, with the beating of his heart and every cell in his body that he was meant for her and only her.
She was his reason to wake up in the morning, she was the reason to breathe.

Nivriti couldn't seem to stop shaking after she told Althalus of her love for him, so worried was she that his words would be some kind way of letting her down gently. The longer he was silent, the more worried she got, and she was in fact about to turn around and walk away, in shame, when he finally broke the silence.
But when she heard his voice as he spoke, she looked directly at him and gave a firm nod. 'I really do.' she affirmed. 'I love you Althalus...I would never have said it if I didn't feel it, I think I knew it for a while but was so scared to tell you.'
The mare shut her eyes as Althalus tucked himself against her, she felt so cherished, pressed neck to neck, and she unfurled one wing, draping it across him as far as she could reach.
'I am so glad, you really have no idea how fast my heart was beating before I said that.' She opened her eyes, her ears flicking as she listened to their surroundings, before speaking again. 'We should find shelter for the night do you think?' she said gently, still not moving from where she was tucked against him. It seemed that the day had slipped past as they had walked and talked, and was drawing to a close.
'Of course..' she giggled a little, out of nervous relief mostly. 'That would require moving.'

Oh, how he dearly did love his winged lady. Every time he touched her, every time she touched him it left his skin burning. Her words made him delirious, her admittance of affection giddy, and the young stallion felt as if he were wrapped around Nivriti's hoof. And he was, he knew it. . . All she had to do was ask and he'd give no objection, raise no brow. If she wanted the world, he'd give it to her - the stars in the sky, the moon over head. . . Anything, so long as she'd be happy.
"Ah, my precious lady," he murmured still holding her close, "I dare hope that you never need to fear again. Not of anything in this world and surely not of anything you could tell me. . . " He'd protect her through and through and hopefully, now that they had finally expressed fully such devotion, of no words or speech. "Though," he admitted softly, chuckling deep in his chest, "I feared admitting such words too soon and driving you away." Such fools they were, or so it seemed, but a fool in love was the best fool to be.
Althalus was hesitant to yeild his grip upon the mare, but her words and giggle did draw him away from his lovesick thoughts and more aware of his present surroundings. Crickes chirrped from their shadowed hideaways and long shadows reached out to embrace the pair. The sky, what bits could be seen beneath the canopy of the woods, was stained as deep an orange as his own coat. . . Ahh. . . night surely had fallen fast.
Amazing how quickly the day could pass when one you loved was near.
Heaving a little sigh, almost sulking, the stallion gave Nivriti a rueful grin. "I suppose you're right, m'lady. . . " Offering her one last nuzzle, he carefully stepped away, cautious of her draped wing, and looked around. There was a damp scent of water, perhaps a pond or small stream a ways away, and an entire canopy of trees to choose. "So tell me, beautiful, where would you like to relax? Beneath the canopy of a tree or something by the water?" Althalus could sleep anywhere, with as much traveling as he had done, but he wanted to be sure Nivriti was comfortable.
The day had moved fast but they still had a few more ahead of them. He'd ask how her feet had held up soon as they relaxed. He didn't want to run her ragged.

'I don't think I would, I feel safe with you. And I don't think I will worry about telling you anything either. Though, I feel that for now at least, there is not alot I can say that topped that.'
Nivriti smiled, nudging Althalus with her nose. Maybe one day there might be other big things, news that she would be able to give him. But that was just a shining wish for their future. For now, everything of note he knew.
'Well if it helps, I'm sorry for being right?' she giggled again, folding her wing and following her love. She listened to the options he spoke of, and sniffed the air herself. There was water nearby.
'Near the water I think. The ground will be slightly damper, moss tends to grow more and it's nice to lay on cool moss when you have tired legs.' she said, an air of apology about her in that she needed to rest so soon. He could probably travel on into the night, but she definately needed a short stop at least. Nivriti hadn't wanted to admit that she was weary already, and had pushed it aside, wanting to continue talking and walking with him. But she supposed that they would be able to do that again tomorrow, and the next day and the next; and all the easier with rested limbs.

Althalus couldn't be more content. The warmth that ran deep in his heart and soul stretched out for Nivriti, enveloped te mare, and he doubted she understood the full extent of his love. They had said it, they had spoken the words that were too often abused or neglected. . . but Althalus had no intentions of taking his most beloved for granted.
He was young, certainly, but he wasn't stupid. This wasn't just lust, though the stallion had to admit that she was perhaps the most beautiful mare ever to walk the earth, there was something more behind it; something emotional, something more than just a physical desire. There was a need to know of her happiness, of her feelings, her thoughts, her views, to know that she felt strongly for him too. This new relationship would hold complications and move up and down. . . There would be good times, but Althalus also knew there would be rough times, darker times ahead. But he wasn't afraid of the mountains, oh no . . . .
Althalus would fight tooth and hoof for her heart, for her affection. Trouble wouldn't break him from her side so easily.
"How are you holding up, love?" He questioned as he wove his way carefully through the woods and over to a small stream and pond. The water wasn't stagnant so it would be fresh, and the ground was indeed softer and covered in green moss. "I suspect the time shall travel quickly as the land changes. . . There's so much I can't wait to show you. The waterfalls as we get closer to home, the open meadows and plains that roll on as far as the eye can see, like a desert made of grass. . . ." The spring time weather would mean that the flowers would be out and blooming.
On top of the sights there was a whole two days to continue talking. Heck, furthermore they had (if he was most lucky) the rest of their lives to get to know one another. And Althalus hoped to cherish every moment of it. It would be the last day that would be the most difficult, heading in to the heart of the mountains. The hills were steep and the paths winding. . . . but they'd make it.
Together.
And it would be good.
Stepping up to the river, the male lowered his head to drink. The shadows were enveloping the world and the sky had already shifted from orange to a deeper purple. Crickets chirruped, toads croaked and dusk was swiftly losing its battle to night. Their first day together, as a couple, was almost over. . . . He had another, tomorrow, to look forward to. Best of all, he had this first night to truly cherish.

'A little tired,' Nivriti finally confessed, as they made their way to the stream that gurgled quietly away from the green-surrounded pond. 'I don't think I've walked so much since I learned to fly, but I'm sure I'll be good again in the morning.'
She smiled at his back as he took a drink. He described the lands of his home so affectionately. 'I am sure I shall come to love the area as much as you obviously do. And even more so because it was where you started. It will be almost as dear to me as you are.'
She looked forward to it because he did. Seeing his home would be one of those moments that she hoped would make their relationship secure - seeing his home, meeting his family? Big steps. Nivriti blinked, realising she'd been staring at him, and her nose coloured. He really was a fine stallion...
'Well,' she said, trying to shake herself out of her daydreams, and she lowered herself to the ground a little way from the water's edge, folding her legs beneath herself and letting out a noise of relief, looking up at Althalus to see whether he would join her yet or not.

Althalus finished his drink, though he kept his ears focused on what his most beloved said. It had been a long day and there were longer ones ahead. . . . but with luck they'd be able to keep each other company. Though Althalus was patient and often confident and secure, this new relationship had him walking on tiptoes. He hoped she would stay as breezy and comfortable around him for long periods of time. . . . Some said that a relationship could change when together a great deal. . . but their relationship had hardly been defined! The spirits knew he wanted to spend his life with her, and that was surely longer than a visit to his home. . . Nivriti seemed just as anxious, so with luck, nothing now nor ever would make her take leave from his side.
Silver eyes light with unrepressed adoration, the stallion moved over to where Nivriti lay. Leaning down, he nibbled ever so gently upon her withers, taking a moment to dote just a moment still upon her. "I must admit I'm greatly looking forward to you visiting my old home, and most importantly, introducing you to the family. It's still a few days north but I promise I'll make our time together worth your while." He grinned, taking a moment to nuzzle her neck and cheek.
Exhaustion was settling on his own bones but he was unsure just how soon he'd sleep. He was excited and almost would have suggested to walk through night! Ah, but it wasn't just him anymore. . . there was his lovely and most previous Nivriti to worry about too. And the poor mare had to be tired. Settling down beside her, Althalus hoped she wasn't object to his closeness.
"I hope you're comfortable. . . if you need anything, anything at all my most beloved lady, don't hesitate to ask." Gently brushing his head against her long hair, Althalus waited for Nivriti to drift in to dreams before he settled himself to sleep.
"Sweet dreams." ((I didn't want to assume or pose Nivriti's actions so I held off on the time jump ahead until this scene was thoroughly wrapped. x) ))

Nivriti replied in a sleepy fashion, shuffling closer to Althalus when he lowered himself down to the ground next to her. She shut her eyes as she spoke, the sensation of his teeth grazing on her withers very soothing.
'I'm looking forward to it as well, though I am nervous about meeting your family.' she said. 'It's all going to be worthwhile..' she carried on, her voice sounding properly drowsy now. 'And precious..precious time with you.' She nodded, her head drooping onto bent knees. 'And you..' she managed, as sleep stole upon her.

[A Few Days Later]
They had walked a long ways. Nivriti's homelands were far behind but for Althalus the journey had been nothing but a few breaths, a few hills, and various stops for sleep and drink. Time seemed to have no meaning now that he walked with the most beautiful mare he'd ever laid eyes upon; time seemed to prove that he needed nothing more in his life than her. . .
And oh how Althalus loved every minute of it. Certainly he was anxious to get home to visit his family and most importantly introduce Nivriti to them all; but part of the stallion was sure that he would walk forever if so condemned to do so. . . no distance was too great so long as his beloved clip-clopped beside him.
Even now, with the hills slowly grower steeper and the plains left behind them, Althalus was reminded of his foal hood. He had pointed out the various spots he recollected - the plains he had run during winter with Porsche and, yes, even her sister Nituna. The general area of the snow drift he and Nituna had climbed and fallen down, embracing the slippery ice and snow. There he had raced the hills with his best friend, Aiolos, and within the foothills he walked he had explored the lands with his dear friend, Caelyndei.
"We're not far now, love - just a bit further along." He encouraged, taking a moment to gentle brush his nose against her ear and cheek. Their long journey had, at least for Althalus, made him ever more comfortable with the brown furred wind. Any shyness he felt in expressing his adoration or affection was slowly fading - he easily and without restraint showed her exactly how dear she was to him; a touch here, a nuzzle there, a soft spoken whisper meant only for her ears and knowledge.
Althalus had every intention of cherishing Nivriti for the rest of his life and such was a decision he was going to stand by; she would never lack love, affection, attention or conversation. Whatever she wanted, whatever she hoped, Althalus wanted nothing more than to give.
The days had been kind to the pair, generally pleasant weather and good conversation made the trip fly. Secrets had been shared and Althalus did his best to share freely his thoughts, his feelings, and be open and trusting enough to keep no secrest from her. It wasn't easy. . . Althalus wasn't a secretive sort, of course not, but to go from living as a bachelor to finding a life with his heart of hearts. . . .
The transition would take some time, but the stallion was ready. This was what he'd been searching for and happily, excitedly, he was ready to show her to the world. He wanted to dig up Caelyndei and Aiolos as well, to introduce his most lovely companion to his best-friends. With luck they'd all get along. . . with luck she'd be as accepted in to their small group as any and even more, he hoped Nivriti would like them.
Glancing up at the mountains looming above, Althalus couldn't help but smile. Was he nervous for the meeting that would soon take place? Perhaps. . . he wanted his parents to adore her as much as he and love her like their own. Oh, certainly his mother was fabulous. . . but what might his father think? Althalus wasn't sure. . . . nothing negitive, surely not, but . . .one couldn't help but worry a hair. Perhaps what was most nerve wracking was wondering how Nivriti would feel about them. . . . .
Ah, but all in due time! With luck he'd have time to get her settled with the area, acclimated to the changes from where her wings most often carried her. A little time for each other before he sought out his parents and siblings. Silver gaze capturing her own, he canted his head, hoping to catch a glimpse as to how she felt this day.

Seeing the mountains made Nivriti awed, relieved and nervous all at once. The mountains were so..well large was probably an inadequate reaction, so she didn't express it out loud. Majestic, and enduring...from his side she looked up at them. She was relieved because quite frankly she was worried that if she walked any more her legs would the size of an Usdia's! Nervous because now the family meeting wasn't far in the future, it was almost here and now.
The rest of the journey had been as wonderful for her, when she wasn't quietly wishing that she'd not used her wings so much after learning how to fly. She promised herself that from now on she would go for a little walk every day, just to keep her muscles in good shape.
She'd enjoyed hearing of Althalus's escapades with his friends and her sister though hearing that they were mostly female friends gave her a pause and she felt a twinge of jealously, which she squashed down and also didn't give mention of. She would not be that mare, the kind who couldn't allow her mate to have friends of the opposite sex because she was so insecure.
She blinked, realising that he'd spoken to her, and she, lost in her musings had not replied straight away.
'Sorry my love, we aren't? Do we have to climb into those mountains?' she asked, looking straight at him, a smile on her face, as it always was when she looked at him.
'I mean, not that I'd mind, they are wonderful and I'm sure the view from up there must be simply amazing, but you know me and my legs.' she giggled, and joked. 'I really do have the walking stamina of a frog.'

Althalus gave a little chuckle as she poked fun at her legs. The poor dear, though she hadn't ever outwardly complained, he understood that the trip they took had been quite a long one. It wasn't easy traveling from her lands to his, and even Althalus was ready for the journey to come to an end. It would be good to relax, to refresh from their excursion and he knew just the place!
"Tut tut," he clicked his tongue at her softly, reaching over nibble ever so gently along her jaw line. "You've handled this excursion beautifully, my love, but we needn't travel so far up. There's a small clearing within these foothills, close enough to where my parents reside to not be more than a small trot away; but far enough to not be under hoof the entire time and allow us a little privacy." Althalus wanted things to go well with Nivriti, and he was more than confident that they would. But at that same notion. . . . well. . . . should they go very well he feared a little down time away from the parental figures and siblings would be something each would need.
"We're really not too far; I promise your poor legs won't have to do any walking from here on out should you so wish!" Silver eyes bright with good humor, he continued with the last of their journey.
Althalus wasn't lying when he lay claim that the small meadow wasn't far. But what he didn't tell her was that the small grove, nestled within the heart of the foothills, was almost like a small sliver of paradise. Being early summer, a variety of wildflowers decorated the greenery. Long, sweet grasses made for plush resting and eating, while tall pines and birch trees dotted the hills. The greenery died away and turned to a more rocky abode, but the sound of rushing water gave form to what was a cold, clear stream from melting winter snow. A waterfall was their company, falling in to a small pool at its base before the waters continued their journey down the hills.
Tail swishing happily, Althalus was pleased to see that the land hadn't changed much. The green hills and mountains surrounding them reminded him of his foal hood and most importantly that he was home. Turning round to face her, giving the small abode his final inspection, Althalus grinned. "Well, m'love. . . we're here."
