Buna ziua.

Hello. I am very happy that there are other people on Gaia who can speak Romanian. I was born in Romania, and I lived there until I was 5. I now live in the United States and I speak Romanian with family and friends. I did not get any education in Romanian, but learning from family, I can now speak, read, and write pretty well.

Quote:
Did Romanian come from Latin? Or did Latin come from Romanian? That's probably a stupid question... But reading what you said... ...I'm confused now. *must know*

EDIT: UGH. Now I'm confused with my own post! Um... Well I heard from someone that Romance languages developed from Latin. Is that true?

Romanian came from Latin along with all the Romance languages. Romanian is the modern language which resembles Latin the most.

Quote:
Also, I was told about "Dracula" meaning "the son of the dragon", but it has the same root as "devil" and becomes confused with each other.

Dracula is nothing but a myth. It comes from a Romanian ruler named Vlad Tepes, known as Vlad the Impaler, who used to impale his victims. It is told that he used to dine by their dead bodies.

Quote:
How do you say I love France in Romanian?

Iubesc Franta.

Quote:
Im trying to learn Romanian. Its hard because Im trying to learn German a bit better.

It should definitely be harder. At least since you speak English already. English and German are very alike, so learning German should be considerably easier than Romanian. On the other hand Romanian is very close to Latin, as are many words in English, so that shouldn't be too hard either.

Quote:
it means love for linden tree

"Numa numa" or Dragostea Din Tei, roughly translated actually means love from the linden tree.

Well it really depends on who you ask. If you Google it right now, you will see many different results. Some say Romanian, some say Italian, and some even say Portugese. But I still stand by my statement.

First of all, it was documented that in the times of the Roman Empire, whevener Rome held meetings between its territories, the Romanian people were to only ones who did not need translators.
Furthermore, 75-85% of the Romanian language comes from Latin.
And finally, you can find out more here.

Hmmm. Well actually, you might be right...partially. You see, Romanian is closer to classic latin, while Italian is closer to vulgar latin, which came in a later period.

why ......... is pretty simple . the vulgar latin was spoken by the simple people like the soldiers sent to conquer "Dacia" . The natives of Dacia were the "daci" or the "getzi" , the ancestors of nowadays romanians.
PostPosted: Tue Jul 18, 2006 12:26 pm

You are incorrect. This doesn't have anything to do with who the Romans sent to conquer "Dacia". It has to do with how the "Dacii" adapted under Roman influence. If you don't believe me, read more here:
