"What were they called?" she asked, unfamiliar with the songs and having an aching need to know what they were. This was the first time she had heard such music: mostly she listened with Neko to her classical music, avoiding the songs with voices because they were Neko's country songs.

"The songs?" He looked up, clearly surprised. "Well...uhh......they're just....from everywhere, I guess. I hear them, and I just....sing them." He strove to explain it, but couldn't seem to find the proper words. For as long as he could remember he had been fascinated by music and it's effects on people. If he heard a song he liked, he concentrated on it with all of his might until he could sing it flawlessly. Though he tended to like certain ones; many of the songs he heard seemed like harsh noise.
He spoke again, haltingly, knowing he was probably speaking more now than he ever had before. "The first one's a song from an opera called Rigoletto, but I don't know what the song's called. Some of it's in Italian; hard to memorize but once you get it down..." He paused and cleared his throat. "The other one's called Lily's Eyes, but I don't know where it's from. And the last one's called To Where You Are. A person named Groban sings it."

Tolfitken blinked, thinking over the songs. "Wait... Neko's seen the movie Rigoletto! I think her grandma has it..." she said, determining to force Neko to let her watch it. She noted JoJo's nervousness and smiled, trying to lessen it. Still curious about the music, she asked, "So there are a lot of songs like those? I'd love to hear more..." Her ears were still tingling and somewhat still waiting for the last note that never came.

JoJo just blinked. "Movie? I...I guess it could have been a movie I heard...." He chewed his lip in thought, trying to remember how many of those type of songs he knew. "There are lots more, but not many to be heard. Most of the music I hear now is awful; noisy and angry with pounding that hurts my ears. At least if you make your voice sound that bad, they throw you out."
He smiled a little, then his eyes went wide. "M-more of 'em? Well.....yeah, there's lots more.....I know some of 'em...." If he didn't know any better, he would say that the way Tolfitken had worded that, she wanted him to keep singing. He sort of hoped not; he had never really sang in front of another person before, and he wasn't sure he could, at least not as well as he could when he knew no one was around.

"I know, I despise the current so-called 'music' most channels play on the radio nowadays," she said, wrinkling her nose and trying not to recall the horrible sounds to her sensitive ears. She much prefered the musc she had just heard to whatever 'that' music was. "It doesn't even deserve to be called music," she muttered, "Not compared to..." She stuttered off as she noted that she had only made him more nervous. "I'm still jittery over what I just heard," she said, smiling almost apologetically, "I'd love to hear more when my ears can calm down, then I can really enjoy it." She tried not to seem like she was overly disappointed or that she wasn't really interested in the music, worried that with her little control over herself and voice at the moment he might get the wrong interpretation.

He made a face. "I don't know how they can sing when they're so angry. I always thought that singing was for happiness or sadness. Still, I've heard one or two angry songs that sounded good...." He began to sing Epiphant quietly. "And my Luuucy, lies in aaaashes, and I'll neeever, see my girl again..." He stopped himself suddenly and cleared his throat. "Anyway, it shouldn't always be for anger." He wrinkled his brow, not knowing whether he felt insulted or just confused. "Jittery? Did my singing...scare you?" He tossed his head, trying to look indifferent. "Well, whatever. Just....." He mumbled the last bit. "Just let me know when.....your ears calm down."

She was nodding in agreement with his statements when he began to sing again, making her smile grow warmer. "Oh no," she tried to correct herself at his confused look, "It made me feel excited and alive, and I just wasn't used to listening to something with such depth." Her ears quivered and she twitched them slightly, running a paw over one of them. "Oh, well, I think they might be more settled now," she said quietly, fidgeting her paws and half-looking up at him.

JoJo felt as close as he ever had been to blushing. It almost made him angry; HIM, the one that makes people gasp in fright and grasp for their good luck charms, blushing! He gritted his teeth; this was not at all turning out to be the nice quiet day he had been longing for.
Still, having an audience didn't seem so bad. He had always considered the earth itself as his audience, and he had enjoyed that, but now that he had an actual being in front of him, he rather liked the change, at least for the present.
Trying to pretend that Tolfitken wasn't there, he slowly closed his eyes, searching for a feeling. He felt a little sad, at first only that he was found out, but almost immediately it burrowed down and reached the well within him. He began to hum almost immediately, and when the notes and words came, they sounded of grief and despair.
Let me faaaaall,
Let me gliiiiiiide,
There's nooooo moment
When fear and dreams....must......collide.

Someone I aaaaaam
Is waiting for courage
The one I want, the one I will become
Will caaaaaatch me
So let me fall if I must fall
I won't heed your warning
I won't heeeeear them

Let me falllll
If I fall
Though the pheonix
May or may.....not....rise

He then raised his head until his mouth pointed upward like a wolf howling at the moon, and his voice rose in key.

I will dance so freely,
Holding on to no one
You can hold me only
If you too will fall....away from all these
Useless fears.....and chains.....

Tolfitken closed her eyes as well, waiting for the notes to sweep her up again. The song hit her like a wave, soaking into her fur and dragging her into the pool of sound and emotion deeper than the others had. For some reason it made her think of Obsidian, her once Obimutti, and she found that she could not open her eyes even if she wanted to, ensnared in the dark memories of having the one person she thought would never abbandon her like the others had turning on her. The heat of the flames and the faint smell of singed fur brushed against her face and she couldn't stop the small gasp that escaped her throat. When the song ended and she was finally able to open her eyes and look up at JoJo she found that her sight was only a blur of his blue and white fur. Frowning, she rubbed at her eyes with a paw and was startled to find they were wet, freezing to stare at them dumbfoundedly.

Once the crescendo was ended, JoJo lowered his head and opened his eyes to sing the last bit, when he noticed that Tolfitken seemed to be.....crying. He was a bit surprised; he knew the song was sad, sad enough for him to not have any trouble with the notes that almost sounded like sobs. He didn't know what to do really; in the past if he had frightened anyone to tears, he would just turn and run away. But this......he had no experience with crying people.
Suddenly remembering that some people who cry like it better when people don't notice, he sang the last bit, though the notes were most decidedly gentler.

Ohhhhhh,
Some one I am
Is waiting for my courage
The one I want, the one I will become
Will caaaatch me,
So let me fall, if I must fall
I won't heed your warning
I won't heeeeear....

Let me faaaaaall,
If I faaaaall
There's noooooo reason
To miss this one chance
This perfect moment
Just let me fall........

Tolfitken's eyes lowered as the music continued, refusing to fully close as she wiped the wetness from her fur. She waited for the song to end before sniffling to clear her nose. Smiling, she clapped her paws. "I think I needed a song like that," she said, her spirits feeling lighter than they had for a while as she was able to face Obsidian's betrayal and move past it, finally able to stop 'waiting for her courage'. Her smile rang true; instead of making her look pathetic while trying to cover up some sadness, she seemed genuinely happy.

Seeing Tolfitken perfectly happy and now being utterly confused, JoJo scuffed a paw in the dirt. "I.....I never thought that was a happy song." He looked down, studying the ground as though every blade of grass had special significance, when really he was still trying despite it all to come to grips with this whole encounter.
"It helps me too. It's like.....drawing poison out of a wound. The nastiest wound you have."

"It's not," Tolfitken said, "But when it connects with something inside of you and you can see the true meaning of that something, you can get past it. And that's the happy part." In truth, she was immensly enraged at herself for crying, and especially for crying in front of someone, and especially for it happening in front of JoJo. But right then she didn't care, it was past, as all past was past, and she was looking forward to the future. She smiled again, "Yes, and once your system is rid of the poison you have more life in you than you ever thought was possible."

JoJo nodded slowly. "Though they mean different things to different people." He wouldn't admit it in a million years, but that song tended to poke at a spot in him that was sick and tired of being judged by what he was rather than who he was that sometimes he just wished that one day he would predict a disaster and perish as it wreaked its deadly havoc.
Then again, sometimes he felt thoughts like that were the worst kind of poisoned wounds. Hearing Tolfitken's words, he shrugged, and shok his head dismissively. "Or less in you than before. Some wounds don't heal and wind up making you weaker forever."

Tolfitken frowned, pondering what he had said. Personally, she believed that all wounds could heal given time, but she didn't know if saying that would make JoJo mad or not. She decided to change the subject instead, "Hey, um, do you think, maybe, if I practiced, and maybe got some lessons, or something... That I could sing, too?"
