I hate kids.
Its an honest statement. I really do. First off they're whiny little brats. Secondly, they don't know when to shut up. They're rude, loud, stupid, and they just expect you to do everything for them. Why on Earth would you want that?
So I have this close friend named Greg, right? He's a psychiatrist or something and feels like he's out to help the world. Anyway, so I was talking to him and he decided my problem (besides trying to be human when I'm not) is that I don't have an iota of maternal instinct. How he knows this is beyond me but he figures I need something. A boyfriend, a kid, Hell, a girlfriend! I don't know if he was hitting on me or not but a few days later I get this call.
Apparently, I've sent in an application to adopt a kid. That's not even the worse part. Oh no.
I've been accepted. Now, for the record, I could have set them straight right there and told them that this has obviously been forged and that I did no such thing. However, I always like to do things in person and so I stormed by a** down to that facility and I was met with the most naive hazel eyes I have ever seen.
Damn it all.

He was sitting by the counter, his huge eyes blinking. The man was saying something about him but I was highly distracted. First off, this place seemed to be half a church-half cross... thing. That was creepy enough. As a fox, I don't really understand the whole concept of 'religion'. The crosses and the general theme of the place made my hair stand on end. The lab part also threw me off since it gave the underlying appearance of danger. Anyone who's seen a horror movie knows that no lab can be a good thing.
The second thing that was distracting me was the kid himself. He was sitting still as a statue, only his eyes giving away that was alive. He kept his gaze on me, his spade tail flickering everyone in a while. He showed no signs of being bored with the conversation or that he was even following it.
I glanced up at the man who was holding out some papers to me. I stared at him blankly and he sighed. "To put it simply this child is half of a sin and a virtue, you signed up for the program, surely you know about it."
"Er, right..." I frowned at the kid and he glanced away. As much as I hated kids, I couldn't just leave him here. His clothes were weird and thrown on, like no one cared to make sure they fit. His shoes looked uncomfortable and I as fairly sure there were claws under there. He looked... miserable. I let out a small growl that seemed to startle the man in front of me and sighed. "Alright, alright... I'll take the brat." I grabbed the pen out of the man's fingers and signed the papers. I knew what it was like to have an owner who didn't give two cents about you. I blamed that past for making me take the runt.
"Alright, Runt..." I said kneeling down to him. "Want to blow this joint?"
The kid just blinked at me, as if surprised. He glanced up at the man then back to me, obviously scared. "Huh?" He questioned insecurely.
I rolled my eyes and scooped him up before he could protest. "My name's D.S., what's yours?" I tried to keep my voice gentle, it always sounded rough and hard to me. I had a deep throaty voice.
"....Devan..." He said slowly, gripping at his shirt.
For the first time I noticed the kid was covered in scales. Weird. "So what is he anyway?"
"The son of Patience and Envy."
I stared at the kid's scared eyes. "Weird combo, kid." I told him before heading out of the building and to my car. I hadn't actually intended on taking the runt home. Apparently, I had some shopping to do. As a fox, I will fully admit I'm prideful and vain. I wasn't going to have the kid run around in those clothes. First thing was first, taking him home.
Devan was quiet the entire ride which worried me a bit. Weren't kids loud and messy? He acted like he was frightened of everything. Still he never seemed antsy or worried about the length of he ride. Duh, of course he wouldn't be. He's the son of Patience. Some of that had to rub off somewhere. When I got out of the car, I helped him out and he latched to my hand. I scowled but his grip didn't lesson as he stared up at the house.
I was going to get Greg for this. I opened the door and allowed him inside, mentally going through what I'd need to do to clean up this place for him. He took everything in then looked up at me for orders. Defiantly a strange kid. "Er... what... do you want?" I asked him, nervous and unsure myself.
"... Nap time?" He responded after a few minutes.
I stared at him for a second, uncomprehending. "Nap time? Oh... you're tired." That made sense. It WAS a long drive. I furrowed my eyebrows and glanced around the room. The couch would do. I walked him over to it then picked him up, setting him on it. I handed him a pillow and a blanket and we stared at each other.
So much for bonding.
"Er... do you uh, like it here?"
He smiled for the first time. A soft, gentle smile like a kit who's seen its first glimpse of the outside world. "Yah..."
He fell asleep rather quickly after that as I pretended to busy myself with other things. Once he was out, and I was sure of it, I covered him up and sat down. What had I gotten myself into this time? A fox taking care of...er whatever he was? That didn't seem like a good idea but those humans obviously didn't understand him. What made me think I did, I wasn't sure. Maybe because I'd been in the same boat once. Well I guess we'd have to learn to sail together or sink.

Today I'm taking the kid shopping. I personally hate shopping. Why? Its boring, you have to deal with people, and someone always had to ask if my hair was dyed. It wasn't but I just explained it was for their benefit. But as much as I hated shopping I couldn't leave the kid in the rags they'd given him. "Hey kid, you ready to go?" I asked him as he finished up his breakfast.
"Where we goin?" He asked me jumping up and taking my hand. He was just damned lucky he was cute.
"Its called a mall. Its got clothes and stuff. We'll get you somethings to play with." I told him herding him to the door. This kid did not know how to move quickly. Once I got him into the car, we headed out. I'll admit, driving was a challenge for me. Every time I see an animal on the road I get more squeamish then I should. I remember the days when the road was a scary thing to cross and keep all four of your paws attached.
Devan didn't understand any of it. He got into the car and like the first time, stared out of the window. His spade of a tail wrapped around my arm and I had to pry it off. He looked confused, maybe even a bit hurt that I had removed the appendage but I gestured to my leg. While I wasn't comfortable with his tail ON me if I was driving I didn't want his tail to cause an accident. He nodded silently and slipped his tail across my leg. It didn't reach all the way but he didn't seem to mind.
I pulled into the mall and helped him out of the car. I wasn't sure how to hide him from the humans. My natural instinct was to keep him at home but I couldn't leave him alone. If the humans dared to hurt him, I'd kill them. Simple as that. He latched to me again and we ventured forth. People stared. Oh did they stare. I pulled him closer and bared my teeth more then a couple of times and once let out a growl that sent a teen fleeing for his life.
The Runt just stared at me in surprise before trying to make the noise himself. I snorted. He'd needed to get a bit more demonic for that... maybe it was better if he didn't. "Alright kid..." I announced, walking into a Sears or something like that. I don't really pay attention. "We're going to get you some new clothes."
He stared up at me in awe. Apparently that didn't happen a lot. I led him to the children's section and we got started. He was very quiet and patient (surprise, surprise) while I sought out things that would fit and made him try things on. It was going extremely well up to the point another child walked by. He was an older kid wearing a tan sweater, he practically bowl me over to rescue his brother who was complaining he was lost.
Devan's eyes grew ground and wide as he saw the sweater and he pointed at it. "I want!" He said loudly, raising his voice for the first time since I'd gotten him. "I want that!"
"What?" I asked trying to hush him before he caused a scene. "You want what?"
"That!" He pointed again.
"A brother?"
"No!"
"... the sweater?" I asked halfway glad it wasn't the first thing I asked. I stared critcally at the boy who was looking me like I was insane and that my kid was a freak.
He nodded helplessly, pouting his lip."He's got one!" He complained loudly. The other parents were starting to stare and I bristled.
"Er, alright ah..." I glanced around then pulled him to where a bunch of sweaters were. They were at least two sizes too big but I wasn't in the mood to argue. He made it sound like I was a horrid parent. I handed one of them to him and he latched to it, nuzzling it.
At least he shut up. So much for being quiet. The rest of the trip was simple save for him seeing a golf hat and wanting that too. Damn it all. Even with his insane outfit, he looked better then he started. Dinner was an entirely different matter.

After coming home from the dinner the duo were exhausted. D.S. shooed him into a bath only to be summoned back to help him. After all he was just a toddler. "Did you like today?"
"Mhm! I like my new hat!" He pulled back on his golf hat while his guardian adjusted his pajamas he'd gotten at the store that day. They were blue and had bunny's for feet. He liked to wiggle them and watch them move. "And I gots to meet my new friend!" He seemed very happy about that as she lifted him up and put him onto the couch. He curled up instantly over the pillow that was bigger then he was.
The fox turned out the lights and hesitated. She didn't really want him to sleep alone. She'd stayed up all night the last time but there really wasn't a bed. She normally just curled up on a beanbag chair. "Can I show you somethin, Dev?" She asked nervous of his reaction.
"Kay..." He sat up, tilting his head to side in curiously. What could his new mom possibly show him?
She paused before taking off the pedant and putting it on the coffee table. Her form shivered before she changed into a sliver fox, her green eyes staring at the boy critically.
"Wow!" He practically yelped, filled with renewed excitement. "Can I do that too? I want one!"
The fox was relieved he didn't seem frightened. "It only works on me, kid. Sorry." She stated but he noticed she didn't use her mouth. How strange.
It was her turn to be surprised when the boy climbed off the bed and waddled over to her. He stared down at her as if contemplating before he picked her up under her forelegs and hugged her. "Sooft!" He cooed, petting her and moving back to the couch. He set her on it, then clamored back up. "Cuddle sleep!" He said moving over for her to have room.
She was in a sate of shock as she left him do what he pleased. Apparently she was his guardian and his pet. Well at least she didn't have to worry about him being scared or anything happening. She'd be right there. She shook herself then curled beside him. It wasn't long before his arms slipped around her and he started to use her soft for as a pillow. "Heh... Night Runt..." She muttered giving a gentle lick to his hand before falling asleep herself.

When Devan woke up, breakfast was already on the table. Jeniffer was sitting in their small dinning room, reading a book called Teaching Your Kids the Basics of Counting and Letters. She'd found it on their shopping venture and it seemed like a good idea to buy it. She flipped through another page and pulled out the stickers of the letters she'd been given. Alright, she could do this easily enough. She glanced up and gave a smirk, which he was starting to realize was her way of smiling. "Mornin' Runt, breakfast is ready."
Like the day before it was eggs. He wagged his tail and fluttered his wings excitedly before bounding over and into his seat. He stopped however when he saw Jeniffer stick the letters above his plate. "Whatsit?"
She grinned. "We're gonna play a game. See those? They're called 'Letters' and you use them to read. Now, in order for you to eat your breakfast you'll have to repeat after me. 'A'." She pointed to the first letter and went on down the line.
Devan flicked his tail in interest, quickly becoming engrossed in the makeshift game. Once he caught on it was smoothing sailing. Once he knew their names, his breakfast had long since gone cold. He leaned forward over the table, wings working like small fans.
"Now these are what sounds they make." She continued, going forward in their lesson. He was patient. Never once worrying over how many times he had to go over a word to understand. He wasn't the brightest kid in the world but he understood well enough. It would take plenty more practice for it all to come together but she'd brought a video too. He could watch while she cleaned house and cooked.
"Mama, what's a park?"
"A place where kids meet. Where'd you hear that from?" She asked distractedly reheating his food.
"Uhm... s'okay if we go sometime?" He became more shy now. If it wasn't something that belonged to someone else, he was very shy about demands. His hazel eyes stared up at her in a half plead and she instantly gave in.
"Sure, later on today we'll go to the park. You gotta eat first."
"Kay!" He giggled and pointed to the letter 'K' before eating.
A few hours later they were on their way to the park.

It would be on a Saturday that you open your mail box (if you have one) and notice there is a rather thick envelope stuffed in there. There is no postage stamp and a very vague return address. But you recognize the font and the company's name. 'Seven of Seven Inc' scrawled in majestic font across the upper left hand corner. As you open it, you may strangely find yourself drawn to the letter, there is a mass of notes inside. They read as follows:
Letter Congratulations! You have managed to succeed in raising your child. (IE: Not killing him or her or getting killed yourself. Haha we kid of course.) We would like an update from you on the following: Guardians Name: Child's Name: Sin: Virtue: Gender: Current Attitude: Likes: Dislikes: Any abnormal growths: (if any, example: Feathers molting, horns growing larger, scars ) Current hair style: Current clothing preferences: Dominant celestial trait: (The sin or virtue) Please summarize in your own words how difficult or easy it was taking care of your child. Did you manage to care for them in a kindly fashion? Or were you forced to discipline them? As well do not be alarmed if you suddenly find your child achieving a massive growth spurt in the next little while. We are finding that the children from our facility have strange growing patterns and are rather unpredictable. Although please let us know if anything unexpected occurs. Sincerely the technicians from Seven of Seven Inc. Ps. Please just leave your letter back in your mail box one you have completed it our courier will pick it up. Thank you.
You would notice the letter seems overly friendly...strange since the scientist were so ...cold before.
(Just take the from Guardians name to Dominant Celestial trait and pm it to the mule, the summarization doesn't have to be long just have fun with it.)

As of late your child seems to easily blend into their surroundings. Especially in the shadows though it doesn't look like it is a trained ability more something that happens on occasion. Such a strange thing to happen perhaps it would be a good idea to set up a meeting with the facility to make sure your child is alright.

Unintentional Hide and Seek
Jeniffer growled as she looked around the room. The kid had been right there! This wasn't the first time and it certainly wasn't going to be the last where she just couldn't find him! She squinted against the light, her tail flickering in impatience. "Devan? Where the hell are you?" She barked giving a wicked look around the room. How in the world could the brat just do that! She was a fox and even she was having trouble locating him. There was something wrong with that.
"Right here momma..." The boy's voice whimpered from the shadows. He moved and suddenly was completely visable. He didn't know why she sounded so mean all the time. He was right there! Maybe she had bad eyes. He ducked under her intense stare and took his hat off, clutching it in his hands. "Are you mad at me?"
"No..." She was no fool to illusions. She sighed and put her hand on the boy's head. Something was going on but exactly what she couldn't say. It had something to do with what he was. Of that she had no doubt. He just seemed to disappear. He also didn't seem to have any control over it. He'd just be standing there then gone the next then visible again and in near tears when she yelled. Not to mention he'd randomly appear and scare the bejesus out of her and then he'd cry yet again for scaring her and being afraid of her wraith.
He rubbed at his eyes instantly brightening. He was forgiving of her anger to a degree that nearly made her want to choke him. At least he stuck around. That was more then she could say for others. He worked with her and she put up with him. It seemed the status of their relationship never changed. "I don't mean to make you upset..."
"I know, Runt." She grunted, dropping a hand to his head to ruffle his hair. "I know you don't. Just hang on, alright? I think its time we paid those docs of yours a visit. Maybe they could tell you what's goin' on. Because I sure as Hell don't know."
The boy practically latched to her side. "We're going to go see the nice man again?" He blurted out, tail thumping around the room in pleasure.
"Er well, I don't know about that kid... Just give me a coupla days to set up the appointment with those freaks and I'll uh see what I can do. Alright?"
"Alright!" He gave her another hug as she awkwardly patted his back. He let go his tail having found one of his crayons and obliged, sitting down to color.
Damn if she didn't turn her back once and the kid had disappeared again! "Devan?!"
"Here mom!"
