"And that's why any pidge 'as to be taught as a chick to stay away from the hard white marked ground. The beasts race up and down it like there was no tomorrow, stopping for nothing!" She shook her head slightly at the terrible thoughts. "I didn't get too close, but once I saw loads of pidge sitting behind a criss-cross of wire mesh, and humans were tyeing something to their legs. Best to keep our distance I reckon. As they say, what the wasteful humans create, the curious pidge will take." She was fond of that rhyme, because it was all too true.

"Tying things to their legs?" Watch said, puzzled. "Well, perhaps they were pigeons, and not pidges. As you know, pigeons aren't too bright and are used by humans sometimes. You're right to not get to close..." Watch ruddered his tail feathers to stay balanced in the bumpy air. "Odd..." Watch muttered. The air had just been so smooth, but now it was bumpy. This wasn't a dead drop, it was turbulence. "Careful," Watch warned. "There's something wrong here..."

Letter nodded. "You're probably right, a pidge would have torn it off the moment they could. I've tried talking to pigeons a few times to see what would happen, but they couldn't answer, just sat there staring. I'm happy to be of the pidge kind." She said thoughtfully. Letter shifted her grey feathers a little too. "Thanks for the warnin' Watch, it is odd." She looked around wondering what could have been the cause of this sudden change in the air.

To the north, and heading their way, was a giant storm cloud, full of electricity. Though they were still a few miles away from the huge storm, flashes of lightning and the sound of thunder were easily noted. And the rain... Huge sheets of rain streamed down like confetti, only faster and much larger.
"Oh... no..." Watch groaned. "We'd better land, or we'll get wet. Why is there a thunderstorm now, and here of all places!" Watch started to go into a dive, circling a tree and he went down. It was a terrible situation for Watch to have been blown out of his home by a storm, then kept away from his lovely tree by yet another one. "April showers bring May flowers..." Watch muttered.

"Oh dear. I argee." Said Letter looking towards the ominous storm cloud, hearing it rumble and seeing the lightning flashes. It reminded her of a story she had once made, where there was a young pidge caught in a storm just like the one ahead of them. She dove down not too long after Watch by the tree. She felt that it had just grown colder, and knew that soon they would be feeling raindrops on their feathered heads. She landed next to the tree that Watch had flew around and quickly looked around for him. She was not fond of storms, they made flying very difficult.

"I hope that the lightning won'y be a problem," Watch said, a little nervous. They were, after all, among a whole bunch of trees and about to get soaked to the bone.
Then the rain came, in icy bunches, thick, wet, and cold. The trees were immediately soaked, as was Watch.
Watch went lower down the tree and closer to the base of the trunk, using the leaves above as an umbrella. It didn't help much, but it did some. Miserable and wet, Watch decided to wait it out.
The thunder above roared like an angry dragon. The lighting cut across the sky like daggers, illuminating the forest before receding. One right after the other, just like a little kid switching the lights on and off, over and over. The storm clouds blocked out the sun.

Letter huddled close to Watch to keep them both warm, and to try and keep wind and wetness out. "If this isn't a really tall tree I think we'll be fine. The weather watchers say its only the tallest that get hit by the lightnin'." She reassured him. She squinted slightly as the rain lashed down by the bucket load, making it hard to keep see very far. What miserable weather, the sky seemed to be groaning along with her spirit. She shivered slightly and puffed out her feathers, remembering how the sun would hopefully come out again and that she would dry. "It just keeps goin'." She said after they had sat there for quite a while, the rain still pelting down relentlessly.

Watch also side-stepped to get closer to Letter, which allowed them to share and conserve their warmth. "At least the wind hasn't picked up too horribly," Watch ventured. At the word 'horribly', the trees all bent over almost double and groaned as the wind tore across them. Watch had to dig his talons into the branch he was on and scrunch down to prevent his being blown away. I'm sorry that I had tried to come home today, Watch thought regretfully. I should've checked with a weather-watcher first...

Letter felt like she had been tossed into a river. There was no part of her that seemed to be at all dry. She sat and waited in the mad noise of thunder, cascading rain, wind and trees. She wished it would soon stop, her mood had been thoroughly dampened along with her feathers, leaving her in silence for a good long time, focusing on staying upright. She slipped once or twice and had to flap her wings frantically to stay upright, however she seemed to manage. Her spirit suddenly leapt as she saw a patch of blue sky over the horizon, and the rain began to slow. "Now isn't that a beautiful sight?" Breathed Letter. The patch of azure blue sky stood out like a blue wild-flower in a mess of dark leaves. There was the faintest beginnings of a rainbow too, as the clouds slowly moved. It was one of those moments that really made you think about the world you were sitting in.

Almost as if frightened off by the world's seeming delight, the ominous clouds moved on. The cheery sun popped out, ready to warm and dry the world that had been so soaked. The blue patch in the sky spread, showing that the world was beautiful after all. The thunder, growing distant now, grumbled at its defeat. The grass sparkled, drinking in the refreshing rain. The trees spread their limbs out mightily, undefeated by the once raging wind. Soon butterflies and bees were going about their business, dantily drinking from flowers dotted with water.
Watch hopped away from Letter and shook off his feathers, careful not to get any on his companion. "There," he said, also cheered by the beauty. "Look at that rainbow!" He stretched one wing high up, pointing at the bridge of color in the sky. "This makes the storm worth waiting through," he sighed. Watch felt an urge to fly into the air, which he promptly did. He circled above Letter, listening to the songs of other birds, showing their joy through their chirpings and warbling calls rather than by flying. Watch, not being a whisperer, did not know the words, but he could still enjoy the music.

"It's a wonderful sight." She said smiling up at the sky, watching the clouds roll away like the tide, the darkness being replaced with light. She leapt up into the air, tucking her legs in as she began to flap her wings and join watch in flight. The sun was all too welcome on her sodden feathers which were still making her feel chilly, the wet being mixed with the wind. However, she soon knew that the feeling would go away when she got moving. She flew behind Watch and began to follow him.

"Right!" Watch grinned as he flew back onto course. "Though that was an unwanted and uncomfortable rest, we might as well appreciate it. By now, we've probably flown a mile and a half, at least." Watch concentrated on getting home now. It was so nice, to be able to go home. After a good long rest in familiar territory, Watch would go back to visit his friends. I hope that my home still IS my home, Watch thought suddenly. What if my lovely tree has been taken over by another bird, or worse, by squirrels? Watch pumped his wings a bit faster, anxiety overtaking him. He'd hate to have to fight over his wonderful home, which he had taken such good care of...

"Yes, you're right. At least we got a good rest." She replied cheerily, riding on the wind with her spirits lifting as she flew. After a while she noticed Watch's wing beats become faster. Letter now felt urgency in Watch's wing flaps now, he seemed worried by something. She wondered what it was. I hope his tree hasn't fallen in the storm. She thought. She moved her wings more quickly and powerfully in order to keep up with him, and also so that he would not have to slow down for her. She didn't like to be an annoyance or a worry to others.

Watch sighed and slowed down, once more overriding his impulsive actions with logic. No matter how fast we go, it'll take an hour at the least to get there. No point in wearing out so early... It'll only take longer. Watch glanced at Letter and felt a little guilty at making her speed up. Watch could think of nothing to say, so he continued to simply fly.

"How much further would you say?" Asked Watch conversationally, to rid them of the pressing silence. "And you must have travelled a very long way to end up close to our flocks." She added as she thought about it. She watched the trees pass by swiftly beneath them, and listened to some of the smaller birds sing below them. She loved the sound they made, though she had no clue what all of the rapid twittering was. A river glinted gently in the sun as they continued to soar above the world to Watch's special tree.
