Many of those things are just blatantly wrong. ADD is a new word for an old problem, "over-activity." In 1967 children with ADD would be in a state hospital, alongside psychotics and kids whose parent's didn't feel like raising them. I had a professor who worked in the children's section of a state hospital in the '60s. The first day his job, a kid came in to class with his ear bandaged. He asked the kid what happened and he said, "Mr. So-and-So got mad and hit me with a broom." An orderly got mad at this kid and beat him with the broom until the external part of his ear was completely destroyed. The orderly's punishment? He was moved to the geriatric unit. Conditions like this were common in state hospitals across the county.
But you know, things were SO much better in those days.

I had a butter knife confiscated from me by a school security officer. Yes, a BUTTER KNIFE. For my lunch. I had to go pick it up in the office at the end of the day, and it was actually locked up.

To all the people who have posted before me, yes I know that those are kind of exaggerated and that this is meant to be satire (although some of those do hit kinda close to reality in some cases). If you look at the difference between now and then, we are way too sensitive to everything and apparently cannot take a joke.

I might be late but i can tell you the one about fighting is true, wel except for the swat and arrest but when i was living in england i was walking home from school when older kids from a different school i lived near, jumped on me ans started slapping me across the face, they got 2 weeks of detention for assault on school grounds but their school contacted amine and they gave me 1 1/2 weeks of detention for "asking for it" because i had my ipod on while i was walking.
also during school i was reading on a bench when 3guys pushed me off 2 of them grabbed my arms while the 3rd kicked my in my privates 3 times when he was going for a 4th i kicked him in the shin, and then landed a kick to the face (was an awesome move) which made him hit his head on the ground the other two ran off to tell a teacher, they got 3 weeks detention and i got 5 weeks, 5 weeks for self defense and it was because his injury's were more sever bulls---. in summery the victim is also charged now.

I know, self-defense is BS, even if you didn't start it and you walk away even worse than they did you're still in just as much trouble. Case in point: my brother. One day he's at school and gets picked on by some of the other kids at recess. They start teasing him and throwing stuff at him. My brother tries to get away, but they follow and end up hitting him in the eye with sand. He finally runs over and and punches one of them. The kids who were harassing him get two days detention, my brother gets two days suspension.

I was in elementary school at the time, and there were this group of kids who had been relentlessly picking on me and literally torturing me. Half the reason was because they thought I was weird and a freak, the other half was because they thought I deserved it for ditching religon class, prayer, and a few other things. (It was a religious private school.) Everytime I would complain about them doing something to me, the administrators would shrug it off and the parents would say "Oh no my perfect child could never possibly do anything like that!" Their answers to my problems were to send me to a psychiatrist and to make claims that I must have sprained my own arm and just "lost" my possesions over the years. Everytime I would fight back, I'd end up getting detention and getting suspended. I finally got expelled when one of the kids tried to push me into the street and I bit his hand, so I was labelled as a "violent threat" to the safety of the school. The kids who were torturing me? Nothing. Their parents were rich enough to buy them out of trouble I bet, and the administrators never liked me seeing as I wasn't a fellow believer. Sorry if that seemed like me just ranting and complaining. I'm just tired of the bullshit about self defence and what I had to put up with in religious school.

Perfectly ok dude, I mean by ranting and complaining. Glad I never went to one, I would probably have been expelled within a week.

We had a teacher in our high school who was fired because she flipped her students the bird. It was weird.

The ADD thing is true here in canada too. I'm sure that all of the things listed are worse in the U.S. though. I've never seen swat come near my school dispite the circulation of pot, estacy, and others and the many yearly fights. The on school officer deals with most of it. It sucks that students are not to use violence in any way. I've seen a victim break his wrist knocking his attaker out and he was still suspended for a couple of days.
If it were the 60 and i was in the southern states, I'd probably be long haired freaky person with far out ideas. I'd be beaten for speaking against the church, beaten for showing up in protests supporting african american rights and I'd be hated for supporting homosexual rights. In many ways the U.S. is more tolerant than they used to be. Canada was slightly better in some ways and worse in others. Canada had cultural reform catholic schools and forced native children to go AND natives didn't have the vote till the late 60s. I'd probably be frowned upon and beaten for speaking against the church and government in this case too.
I'd also probably be a lot more tempted to use heavy drugs, not fully understanding the concequinces and get hooked. But, one can never really know. Good topic though mrgreen
