A much more light-hearted season opener than previously, and overall, I enjoyed it. Nice to see an alien race NOT get blown out of the sky for once.

Without a doubt, however, this episode will always been remembered for That "Guest" Appearance - I knew Rose was coming back, in one way or another, but I didn't expect her to show up in Episode 1!

Catherine Tate didn't annoy, which is a good sign for the rest of the season - the "silent conversation" was fun. lol

When I found out about Rose, I was sort of surprised that she was in this first one. The bad side of that is that I sort of found out before I saw the episode. DX When I saw her in the episode, I sort of felt like crying for a moment. She just looked so sad.

I thought the episode was fun. I like how they've both improved since "The Runaway Bride", but she's still pushy. *smiles* The window conversation made me laugh. This looks like it may be a really fun season.

If I remember correctly Jack mentioned something about Pompeii and "Volcano Day" in passing in those episodes.

Yep, you're spot on. Jack claimed one can work the same con he did in the Blitz in Pompeii, provided one remembers to set the alarm clock for volcano day.

Here's a thought...given that we're leading up to all of Ten's companions appearing in the finale and given Rose's cameo in Partners in Crime...

I wonder if they'll have John Barrowman do an unpublicised apperance in Fires of Pompeii and have Donna briefly meet Jack without knowing who he is. smile

All of Ten's Companions? Wow, that should be fun.

That would be absolutely wonderful! I can just imagine the Doctor's reaction, to Donna meeting Jack, though they'd be meeting pre-Doctor Jack. Which would be very interesting on its own.

It would be awesome if they met Jack, but I doubt it'll happen.

Oh, those here's an interesting note. Jack got his name specifically from a World War II soldier because that's where he was doing his con. So if this is pre-Doctor Jack, then mayhaps we'll learn his real name? (Or even just a previous fake-name, which would also be interesting)

But again, I doubt he'll be in the episode. Although it might be interesting to see him, like, in the background or something.

EDIT: I also want an Adipose. They're so cute. XD

i just saw this episode, as i was at work when it was shown so i had to record it.
it was alright. not too bad for a first episode. donna... i dont know. she might grow on me. but i just hate catherine tate xd but i did think the window mime conversation was funny.
kinda odd to see rose so soon in the series, even if it was for all of about 3 seconds.

But of course. I've always thought direct theft to be more flattering still than mere imitation. Take two. smile

On the off-chance that we do see him, that's all it could possibly be for it to have escaped publicity. A cameo on the same scale as Rose's.

I think I want an Adipose. But to be on the safe side, I'd like to know what their adult form looks like first.

Rose, meh. Am I the only who isn't positively ecstatic with Rose returning? Not that it's a bad thing, but I don't see why we should bring her back. She had her run, she was great as a companion for the most part. But to bring her back, that seems a bit to much of a stretch.

I agree.

She was good before, but one of the things that annoys me about RTD is that nothing is ever just gone or dead. More Daleks, and universes that just won't close. Some things should just stay dead (apart from with the daleks, but they shouldn't come back on such a regular basis in my opinion)

Fun facts! Despite the slightly-less-good time slot and Britain's clocks recently having gone forward (both of which were expected to damage the ratings...not sure I entirely understand why in the second case) Partners in Crime kicked the arse of everything else broadcast on Saturday with 8.4 Million viewers (Casualty was in second place with 7.1).

As an example to help overseas readers appreciate how good this is...new episodes of LOST only just scrape past one million viewers over here.

Now, we're waiting for the AI figures so we can find out whether or not the audience liked it. I've a suspicion that they did.

EDIT: My suspicion was right.

It got an AI of 88. By the BBC's reckoning that makes the episode 'excellent' and two points off 'exceptional'. Go Team Who!

88 also means it's tied with Smith & Jones and Last of the Time Lords for the honour of being the second most well-liked Doctor Who story ever. And yes, that's counting the old English series. eek

(Parting of the Ways and Doomsday are tied for first, in case anyone's wondering)

I agree, as much as I love RTD's obsession with making "dead" or "locked-away-in-an-alternate-universe-so-it's-kinda-impossible-to-breach-the-gap-without-bringing-down-both-universes" alive again. Rose should be respected and left to live her life in the Alternate Universe, same with the Daleks they've nearly become a joke. No offense but having them pop up every 5 episodes kinda takes the "frightening" factor out.

But whatever floats RTD's boat is fine with me, as long as the show keeps running I'm happy.

LOST Confuses me, the last episode I saw was TimeTraveling!Desmond (Who is awesome btw, I miss Charlie. D: )

Lost?..... That just lost me.

What are you all talking about in letting things stay 'dead.' Don't you know? Things that really annoy the Doctor have never stayed dead. Daleks have been around sense the first Doctor. For them to remain dead would be..... I don't want to say it. Never say 'always stay dead' when it come to Dr. Who. How else would the Master come back? Again? And again? and again?

Believe me when I say, this was going on WELL before RTD.

Yeah. Cybermen always came back, too, and Davros kept reappearing. Omega came back the one time after it looked like he was gone. The Rani somehow escaped the predicaments the Doctor left her in.

3nodding In fact the English series did show us 'the end...the final end' of the Daleks in a once and for all way. Trouble is they showed us at least three different 'final ends' of the Daleks and brought them back after each one. smile

People who seem to think that 'Dead means dead' in the old series are very much mistaken. It was more like 'Dead means dead...but only if you're Adric' twisted

I've had quite enough of the Daleks - so far, over three years, there's been four Dalek stories. During the three Fifth Doctor (my personal favorite) years, there was one. I don't want them gone forever, but I want bigger gaps between the stories. They're being rather over-used.

This is a lucky thread; I just got a blue gift box!!!! blaugh

Okay.. just saw it.. O_O.... it was definitely a great Doctor Who season opener. Very lighthearted, in fact.. of course, this is the first time it hasn't been really insane in a long time.. 'Rose' was the episode to introduce Who to a lot of people.. the next season opener was right after the Doctor regenerated, so we all were getting used to the new Doctor on 'New Earth'. The one after that.. the Doctor was incredibly upset after losing Rose... so we get tons of mentions of her whilst introducing the first companion change. Whew!

I have to say right off the bat that I really really hated Catherine Tate in 'Runaway Bride' and was not looking forward to seeing that character become the newest companion. However, I have to say now that they toned down that annoying aspect and she became much more likeable. This is probably one of the few times that I liked one of RTD's scripts, actually. I still don't like Donna too much... but I suspect she'll grow on me midway through the season.

The monsters weren't really 'monsters', and the evil lady was just plain awesome. ^^ Wonder where she got the sonic pen, though. xDD

Also: OMGWTF ROSE! I get clobbered with confirmed rumors that she's back.. and then she shows up for five seconds in the first episode!!! eek

I can see how the universes collapsing would have something to do with her just fading away after being completely solid ... two parallel universes that occupy the same space begin to collide.... sounds like a more drastic version of Army of Ghosts/Doomsday... (also, a completely unrelated adult book series where things didn't exactly work out in the end)

I think if a character *coughRosecough* is so well liked... and then given an amazing finale.... they shouldn't come back! It ruins the original goodbyes.. and he mentioned her enough last series.. maybe it's the whole 'power of a word' thing? sweatdrop

I WANT AN ADIPOSE!! xd

No more freaking Daleks for a while, k? It worked with Rose having never seen one and then met it... it kinda worked with Martha.... I don't think Donna's gonna be any help. The most it will do is exterminate her because she won't stay quiet. xD
..plus TWO finales have ended in Daleks and death... why more? (I think I said all this somewhere about how each finale is like a worse copy of the last)

Edit: ... my summaries/rants have gotten longer. O_O
