PunkRockFaces So more gimmicks make you better? If that's the case then Vai can/has done everything that Hendrix did (except set his guitar on fire), and then some. (I.E. playing with his tongue, or making his guitar "neigh") The fact is that it's a subject of OPINION as to who the "best" guitarist is. You can't judge by gimmicks, or speed, or even talent. People are going to believe what they believe, and nothing you say is going to change their mind. EXAMPLE: My dad thinks Angus Young is the best player of all time. I have tried to convince him otherwise by making him listen to Satriani, Vai, Maalmsteen (Sp?), Batio, Gilbert, Chet Atkins, Paul Simon (and Garfunkle), Brad Paisley, and many more. The response I recieve is always the same though, "Yeah, they're pretty good but they just don't have that sound that Angus does." It's true, and I can't argue that. So what did I do you ask? I started learning AC/DC songs, (I can currently play Back in Black and Highway to hell) after about three weeks of practice and learning other things I can copy his style... "Somewhat well", but "i'm still no Angus." Yes that's a true story, and yes it did have a meaning to it. The only way you could actually figgure out who the "Greatest Guitarist" is, would be by asking everybody in the world who their favorite guitarist is and then seeing who got the most votes. That would be the current "Worlds greatest guitarist", because that would be what the WORLD has chosen, not just some thirteen year old in front of a computer. THANK YOU GAIA!!! GOODNIGHT!!! Best guitarist isn't subjective, by doing what you're suggesting would simply turn out with the world's favorite guitarist, but NOT the best. Like I said, best would mean this guitarist would have to excel in every single genre.

For someone who's in the wrong decade, Hendrix sure does get a lot more votes.

The Nameless Liberty And hide from X JAPAN and later hide with Spread Beaver, and Zilch are like... amazing. For sure. If I ever manage to meet Dave Kushner, my first question would be "what was it like being in the same band as hide?"

My favorite guitarist is Robert Fripp. I know he's not the best, but he's up there in my opinion and I love his incredibly unique style.

I say MAB, just because Herman Li isn't paired up with Sam Totman. I know what you're going to say, "They're just playing fast. There's no soul to it." But they do. Listen to more songs than TtFaF. Sure, Guitar Hero did boost their popularity, but it did the same for a lot of bands. They were well known a year or two before GH1 even came out.

I think the greatest is either Hendrix, Clapton, or SRV. But as far as influential, Robert Johnson.

Beatellicle I voted for Jimi but....where's John Lennon, George Harrison, or Eddie van Halen on here?? I don't think John and George are that great. It only takes me a few hours to master a Beatles song and I'll admit I'm not that great at guitar. No offense to the two because I think they're great in every other way. I just think skill is a huge factor when figuring out who the greatest guitar player is. I vote for Hendrix. He was good at singing, dancing, playing lead, and playing rhythm all at the same time. On top of that his songs were great and meaningful. And who else thinks that Herman Li isn't that good at all? He can't replay any of his songs. Most if not all guitar players should be able to know their own songs.

Well, Michael Romeo & Jason Becker aren't on the list, but Paul Gilbert easily takes over on this poll for me.

How come all the guitarist in this poll are from the same school of guitar besides Jimi? There is no such thing as the best guitarist in the world. There's plenty of good guitarists not even on this poll and ones here that I know in bands that people here don't know about. Look at it this way in theory Jimi Hendrix is the best ever because he INVENTED the way guitar is played now. Then there was Edward Van Halen who took that and advanced it in ways that nobody heard it before with stuff like two handed- tapping. Then it branches from there. Kirk hammet forwarded thrash, Chuck Suldiner invented Death Metal, Darrell Abbot reinvented the guitar to where it is played today and has inspired generations of guitarists already and will continue to do so, John Petrucci introduced technical guitar and made odd time signatures and tempo shifts popular. Most of these people on the poll are showcased jack off guitarists. Not that they aren't talented because they are but to truly hold the title of "best guitarist ever" is to have actually changed the music world in some way. Notice that there are no people rising out from the underground that come from this school of guitar and it's only these guys in this poll. I recommend re-analyzing you're way of thought and broaden your horizons.
