For a moment it seems as if the storm itself has provided a balm to soothe the desperation of the fledglings - a sudden gust sends a rather large branch flying directly into the monster in the canopy, slamming into it with a solid THUNK. The shadowy figure drops out of Fiachra's sight, leaving a loud hiss of pain echoing in the stormy night. In the wake of the creature's passing there is silence (or at least what passes for silence in this storm). The reprieve is long enough to allow the fledglings to begin to breath easy, to feel as if they may be safe.

And then, from behind Fiachra, the horrific circumstances repeat themselves. THUMP. Ssssscrape, scrabblescabble hisssssss... the noises climb higher and higher, until the girls can look up and see the dark shadow looming above the young male.

As fast as she could, Fig grabbed Pika and hurdled to the opposite side of the nest. She wanted to get as far away from the creature as possible. The other female didn't need to tell her twice. Looking towards the other two fledglings, Fig could tell that they were obviously just as scared as she was. Even the boy was showing signs of fear. The situation was getting worse and Fig was now visibly shaking. "C-come o-o-over here!" she studdered trying to call the other fledglings.

But before she could say anymore there was another loud sound. This time, Fig was actually comforted by the sound. Apparently, something had hit the creature and caused it to fall down. The female's golden eyes could no longer see the black figure. "I think it fell!" she shouted out in excitement. But this excitement was only temporary. For, after only a moment the figure reappeared right behind the male. Whatever the creature was, it sure was determined.

Their eyes met, one trembling and frightened, fortelling of future deaths and the other shaken and already grieving for their broken bodies. He knew it wasn't the end- it couldn't be the end. But somewhere in the back of his mind, that stone castle fell again and again, stone rocks tumbling like blood spilling over the nest-

No. He wouldn't die like this, he wouldn't let himself, that's right- the girl, the girl, the girl was saying something... hide? Hide?!? Would that really do it? In the darkness his thoughts reached their limit, stopping and converging on one point: Survival. Of course. Hide. That was what he was going to do. Pressing himself opposite the female to another side of the nest, in a crook between two branches he avoided their gazes, afraid the fright would leak into his own heart.

The silence, the yelp, everything came like quicksand, the relief that lifted his heart like a million blue balloons in the sky. But then it started again- the scratching, the fear, the nerves in a knot. Looking up, he caught the sillhouette of the creature, sending his heart into broken rasps of desperation.

Pressing himself further into the wall, he flickered his eyes over the bright mus, wondering if the creature would be able to see it in all the chaos. Closing his eyes, he looked away and let out a breath of bitter air, hating the way things were turning out. He just wanted to live, for everything to stop.

Mulberry was still so intent on hiding that when the other female sang out in relief, Mulberry immediately hissed at her and pressed herself further into the little cranny in the wall, tighter against the other fledgling. That was probably the first time she really hated being right. The sound returned, and Mulberry's heart sank like a pinioned parus.

So terrified that she couldn't even tremble anymore, the little Wildtype's big, yellow eyes stared up in utter horror as the humongous shadow slowly crept up over the little boy's head, looming over him. She didn't want to watch, she didn't want to see, but she couldn't look away.

No... no, her mind pleaded. Don't eat him. Don't eat us. Go away. You can't see us. We're not here. He's not there.

But not so much as a breath escaped her throat.

With the fledglings all scattered to the four winds, the shadowy figure looms overhead. It waits, watching, silent, and then suddenly something sets it off - its hissing and panting can be heard over the raging storm, until it leaps into motion.

For a moment the shadowy figure is flying, right overhead, as if it is making ready to dive down upon the hapless fledglings. But then it is struck by a stray branch and it falls down, down.. landing with a sharp thud. What had been dark and mysterious up near the canopy is just sodden and disappointing in the nest - dark russet feathers plastered to its form, puddles of water collecting nearby. It might be a Sentinel.. but it could be mistaken for anything, from a distance. It's also not moving, or making any noise.

Fiachra twitched at the noise- there was something more... and now it was in the nest?!? Head tilting at the strange pile of feathers and water he puffed out his chest curiously, his nerves still on end.

Outside, the storm raged on, and as a few droplets of stray rain hit his nose he gasped from the frigid feel of them sliding down his feathers. He was standing too close to the storm, but to move would mean standing closer to that... thing.

Terrified eyes rose to meet those of the other female pressed against the wall, then traveled downward reluctantly to the silent shape looking broken and pathetic on the floor of their hollow. Shuffling backwards, Fiachra held his breath, he would have to be careful, or horrid things would happen to him. He knew that much.

But it was a relief that whatever it was wasn't tearing them apart with razor sharp talons.

Yet.

At first, Mulberry was too terrified to move. The thing was still and silent, but it was still pretty big - and the numbing fear that it had instilled in her when it was still just a threatening shadow did not just dissipate in an instant. Her big eyes met those of the little male, and even though she could see that he was terrified as well, she felt such a tremendous relief that he was still alive that some little inkling of courage came back to her.

She took a closer look at the sodden thing. It was big, sure... but not much bigger than a normal grown-up. And even though the colour was strange, it had feathers just like a normal grown-up. In fact... she scooted sideways along the wall a little, still keeping her distance. Then edged forward slightly. Wasn't that a... face?

Mulberry watched the perfectly still figure for a moment, not moving a single muscle herself. Then she pulled in a deep breath and fluffed herself up so that she might feel bigger and braver, and hopped up to the drenched thing, reaching out a trembling talon to poke it.

"H-hey... A-are you okay?"

If Fletcher had been at all aware of just how much heart-rending terror she'd put the fledglings through she probably wouldn't do what she does when brave Mulberry reached out with her talon and her words. Unfortunately, Fletcher is completely unaware and more than a little addled. So when she is touched she bursts into motion, leaping to her feet, spreading her wings, and fluffing her drenched feathers. A sudden push with her Will gently nudges Mulberry away from her while it seems to shove fiercely at the water, spraying the nest with a strange Will-borne deluge.

When all is said and done, the russet-feathered Aberrant is left in the centre, completely dry, standing calmly and gazing about herself with pale green-gold eyes. She seems to be somehow both relieved and disappointed to see herself surrounded by Wildtype fledglings. Belatedly, she answers. "Me? Fine fine, I'm just fine. You? All okay? Where are your.. your Minders and Teachers? Gone, gone away?"

Fiachra blinked and wheeled back, beak open in silent, horrified terror, eyes spinning in his head and talons tripping over themselves- thoughts, thoughts, thoughts screaming, what, why, why am I here get me out we're all gonna die, the flurry of drops battering into his face like a team of suicide bombers focused on the kill.

He falls back, down, almost out of the nest, golden streak eyes open in amazement at the Sentinel, amazement and tinges of fear, an emotion that he'd been having trouble clamping down lately. Swallowing, he edged himself to the side of the hollow, avoiding the gaze of anyone that would be able to see into his shivering heart.

He had enough fright, he just wanted to fly away, for the storm to stop, for him to be able to fly well enough to get far, far, far away.

At the voice, he relaxed but did not turn to watch, his heart pounding up his throat and down again. Closing his eyes in weariness, he leaned backwards and experimentally flapped his wings, as a way to show that he as alright without having to say a word.

Would the females be mad again, he wondered?

Mulberry had pretended to be prepared in case the unknown sentinel would make any sudden movements, but when it actually does explode into action she finds out just how wrong she is. Her legs do what they were prepared to, and jump backwards, but unfortunately not both at the same time, so she ends up in an awkward sprawl only inches further back from her original position. Her beak opens to let out a scream of terror, but since she is inhaling sharply at the same time, all that comes out is a really weird squeak.

But when it is over, and the strange sentinel stands up straight and speaks like a normal grownup, Mulberry just stares up at her for a little while, as if dazed, before the realisation that she's not actually going to get eaten actually sinks in.

And that's when all the accumulated stress and fear finally takes its toll on the little fledgling. She is so incredibly relieved that the waking nightmare is over, and there's actually a grownup there with them, and at the same time incredibly angry for having been startled, and frightened, and, and...

The little female's entire plumage flattens, she hunches over - without even getting up first, which is something of an accomplishment - and begins to keen breathlessly, as if she was really, really sad.

"You're not supposed to do that," she wheezes, merely shaping her keening into words. "You're not supposed to... do that!"

Confused by Mulberry's actions, Fletcher tilts her head from side to side and inches forward. She hadn't shoved that hard, had she? "So so hard to be sure.." she mutters under her breath, reaching out to poke at the hunched fledgling with foot and Will. "No, no. No, don't be broken little, little thing. One. Little one. Didn't come here to break you, no, what's wrong? Does it hurt? Where? What?"

Concerned, she turns her head about to regard the nest and the other fledglings, and eventually pins her gaze on Fiachra. "Names? Who are you? Who is she? Minders, where? Gone? Closer, closer, I don't bite young Sentinels," she croons, turning back to regard Mulberry and wick the moisture away from the young wildtype's feathers. "There there, not to worry, nothing's wrong."

Fig couldn't believe her eyes. She had thought they were all about to get eaten or something. But it was just an adult. Just an adult that had scared her out of her wits! The fledgling wished she had found a better way to make her entrance. That way, Fig wouldn't have been scared for her life. Either way she was not mad, just relieved. Relieved that she wasn't about to die and relieved that there was now an adult in the nest. Now, in case anything bad really came, they would be alright.

Glancing around, Fig looked at the other two fledglings. They seemed relieved as well. Fig came out from the corner of then nest slowly. Her legs were shaking from the events of the storms.

Slitted eyes watched her crumble. Fiachra winced, wondering if the small female was having a fit. Almost reaching over to help her, he pulled back, hesitant. She'd be okay, they had that (incredibly weird) adult, now, so she'd be alright. He would just watch, like he always did. Standing back, he tilted his head to listen to Fletcher, frowning.

Inside his head, the thoughts were whirring again, like a soldier recovering from shell shock. His eyes trailed over the walls, stripping them for a next move, in case something else unexpected happened. No, he couldn't jump into the storm, he could barely fly that well. No, he probably didn't blend in well to the tree, either. The lightning would reveal everything. No-

I don't bite young Sentinels.

Fiachra blinked at the word, bite, the trauma of the earlier events still sending him into flurries of panic. Wait, 'don't'. Don't bite. He looked away, embarassed that the only words that he did manage to catch had scared him to such a point. Relaxing considerably, he reached out a small talon and edged closer, shaking off the flurry of droplets that had attacked him earlier.

Being gently prodded and spoken softly to, Mulberry quickly pulled herself together. She wasn't a hatchling anymore, and besides, the worst of her ire was already blown over. She took a few deep breaths and fixed the strange grownup with two grumpy, yellow eyes.

"'M not broken," she explained, grudgingly patient. "I was scared." She pulled herself up, still keeping a close eye on the adult. "We've been all alone here since the storm started, and there were scary noises..." She preened very briefly, then looked over at the little male, since he didn't answer the adult's questions.

"I don't know if he can talk," she informed the russet female. "I'm Mulberry. I think the Minders forgot us. Who are you?"

"Best hope he can hear, hear what I say! Storm out's still raging, young little.. little fellow. Winds buffeting, blowing, shoving. Little bit like you'd be eaten up by the storm in no time, mind. No, no, not safe outside." Wincing a bit in mostly-ignored pain as she gives herself a look-over, the aberrant clacks her beak in annoyance to see all the broken feathers in her tail. That's what she gets for going out in this weather. "Too old for this," she mutters, shaking her head and grinning to herself.

"Closer, huddle closer then little bits, Mulberry, other little small nameless ones," she gestures with her wings, clearly intending for all of the fledglings to snuggle up close. "Me? Oh, me oh me oh my. How long since anyone has asked!?" Fletcher laughs quietly, "Many, many things I am called, and most of them not suited for a fledgling's delicate beak! You though, you can call me Fletcher, as that's the most suitable of my many names."
