Ari almost choked; she had caught his bluff, and he felt himself tense. But he took a deep breath to regain his composure. "O-of course I feel blessed, Layil," he smiled awkwardly after a brief pause. "I've never had cubs before; this is a good thing." That is to say, it might be. The truth was, he was by no means ready to settle down with a family. He was still searching for what he had lost, and so was she. When are we going to stop lying to each other? he thought guiltily. "What really matters here," he said, avoiding the topic of his own feelings. "Is how you feel."

She started a bit guiltily at that, ears tilting back for a moment. He was right again ... if he was maybe pretending, well, so was she. But it would almost be worse to tell the full truth now. So she swallowed and answered, "I ... well, I can't say that I expected this, but... I suppose I'm happy now." Her voice was quiet, almost reserved - and she could only hope she was hiding her nervousness well enough.

He willingly believed her, if only because it was what he wanted to hear. "Neither of us expected it," he said, finally and geniunely relaxing a bit. "But it's happened nevertheless, and we'll be fine if we just make due." Ari leaned over to press his muzzle to her cheek, trying to be comforting - although he may have done it just as much for his sake as for hers. "I'm glad you're happy then." We'll make it through this, he persuaded himself. We have to.

Layil sighed softly at that and leaned against the larger male with something like relief. No... he wasn't her mate. But she did need someone right now. And Ari was willing to be there for her.
"Yes..." she replied softly. They would make it.
