Another late night, another sleepover at Dixie's. Raven was going to kill him. But really, surely she could understand the fact that buses were... scary at night. And with all the kids they took care of, it wasn't like she could just hop in the car and come and get him. Staying the night was the best option for everyone.
Since Franny slept in his old room now, Archie took the couch, donning an old pair of cotton PJs with giraffe heads all over them he found in the closet. The couch wasn't the most comfortable place in the house, but Archie was tired and soon fell asleep with no trouble.
As he slept, his spirit somehow managed to escape his body, floating above it in a spectral form that was like his regular one, except it could walk through walls and doors and such. Even the little relic was around his neck. However, there was something odd going on, apart from him being otu of his body. A large wooden door had mysteriously appeared, floating high off the ground in front of Archie's spirit. And the man's relic seemed to be beckoning him towards it.
Archie looked down at his sleeping form and shuddered. "Hey," he said, his voice barely making any noise at all. He kicked his feet in the air. "HEY!" No one answered. This was just... spooky. He turned from his body to the wooden door. Also spooky. His hand went to the relic as he felt its bizarre beckoning. "No," he told it, but the feeling didn't stop. Maybe if Dartie had mentioned obtaining this child would involve flying through the air and floating wooden doors, he might have tried more drastic measures of getting rid of the thing. "Fine." He walked toward the door, his feet not making contact with anything but still managing to propel him forward, and tugged on the knob.
On the other side of the door, he found himself on clouds, with a bizarre-a** looking man laying there, a stack of cards in his hand. Apparently, when he died, he'd been playing cards with someone else. Archie didn't know it, but his card partner was an equally freaky looking apathy god, who'd gotten killed about the same time. The relic glowed softly, trying to draw Archie to the body, beckoning him to touch it.
Strangely enough, Archie didn't need the relic's faint glow to draw him to the body. He rushed forward, but didn't touch the odd-looking man. "Sir? Are you okay?" Not expecting an answer, Archie leaned over the rest of the way to look at the man's face. And people thought he looked weird. He moved his hand from where it still rested on the relic and poked at the being's shoulder.
As he touched the man, the body and relic began to glow brightly. Shooting from his neck like pure light, the relic entered the glowing mass, causing it to shrink rapidly. In moments, the glowing stopped, and a considerably smaller figure was before Archie-a baby boy with large, awkward elephant feet, and wings, among other things.
Archie stepped back and squeezed his eyes shut, barely suppressing an utterance that might have sounded embarrassingly like a girly scream. "Oh," he said, once the light had dimmed. "It's you." He stepped forward again, looking the baby over. "Well, I knew it would be you, but... when Alek got here, Dixie just came home with a stick." He supposed landing in a noisy pod was no picnic either, but he had never really thought about how his kind arrived very often. "How do we get out of here?" he asked as he bent down to pick up the baby, as if he was somehow still speaking to the dead man with the cards.
As Archie claimed the baby, the door opened in front of him, allowing the two to go to their bodies and wake up, once more.
