Well, I'm the type of person who'll do something even if I know it won't make a difference. And I disagree with you that words cannot change things. Words communicate ideas, and when enough people believe in these ideas, change happens.
I'm hoping to avoid the whole roommates thing. But maybe.

I actually think that a world-wide demonstration to free Tibet is an amazing thing. People around the world, who have never set foot inside Tibet, care about what happens to the lives of such a peaceful society... and the thing is this: No one is telling them to care.
It's not just America who is stepping in... it's NUMEROUS nations around the world.
Think about this: What kind of country forbids the MEDIA from entering and letting the world know what's going on?

CrazieDoily Words can't really DO anything to change something. Actions can do more than Words can, but not Enough. What's the point? You have Hope? Or just Bored? Pssshhha! Hope. I am no longer Passive. It's a waste of time. I am a Pessimist, and no amount of Words or even Actions "Protesting" me can change my mind. (You'll have roommates someday, and you'll probably understand me then.) Roomates turned you into a pessimist? I was in college with a kid that I'm pretty sure never showered and not even that made me give up on hope. These are average citizens showing their disdain for a regime that abuses human rights. Enough pressure can bring about change ie. the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War protests.

One thing may be stopped/changed, but it'll happen again. "History Repeats Itself." Haven't you heard that before? You just used Vietnam as an example, and what's going on now in the Middle East. There may be no draft, but history still does find a way to repeat itself. That's why this is not a Perfect World. Humans need something to do/fight for. In a Perfect World there is none of that. So, what happens in a Perfect World? Absolutely Nothing.
Oh, and have you ever stopped to think that your ideals differ from another country's?
(My roommates don't respect me. The more passive I am the more respect I lose. I've never been "in charge," no one has ever really followed my lead, and thats all I want. To be a leader. Not in a very big way. as long as I get some g*d damn respect.)

I personally think that Tibet is, well, was a very interesting society that was really very peaceful and respectful.
So the actions of the Han do sadden me, just as they do in Xinjiang/ East turkmenistan.
However Dolly has a point, we must negotiate in such a way as to respect Chinese sovreignty. We can express our concern, we can peacefully protest but we must respect the sovreignty. Otherwise, we lose all credibility and become no better than they.
And remember they hold much of our debt.

So, China gets a pass because its ideals on human rights are different than ours? Should the Nazis have gotten a pass too?

Thank You for making this complicated and completely missing my point. You know, "World ain't perfect" and "Humans HAVE to fight for something" otherwise They'd be bored in a Perfect World.

Just leave me alone and let me do my thing. If you want to be a Lemming then by all means, be a Lemming. Just let me be so I can work to my goal to be an Art Director.

I was just wondering how far this idea of yours was willing to go.

Somebody does need to help Tibet. Call in the US Marines and Army Rangers occupy it (get the Indians to help too. They don't like China, so they might be willing). It's the only way Tibet will ever be free. I hate the idea of a war, but it's the only feasible option at this time.
