A bit off topic here but why does he run in place during most dialog scenes?

Haha. Maybe he's ADD like Zack in CC and can't stay still? xp

Either way you have to admit that "Tee-dus" sounds a bit weird. So I've always called him "Ty-dus".

Upon perusing this site, I have discovered (among many other very interesting things), that Tidus is in fact pronounced "Tee-da."

That would, of course, be assuming the website is accurate. It certainly looks and sounds reliable, but that doesn't really count for much. There are sources, but not they're not very specific.

I now also must question Kingdom Hearts's pronunciation. I have just realized that nobody has doubted the translation in this case, and having never heard it in Japanese (and considering the possibility that his name was never even said aloud in the Japanese version), I can no longer consider Kingdom Hearts a definitive source for the answer...

I think I'll just start calling him Jim.

That's very interesting but somehow dissapointing confused And I was assuming that Kingdom Hearts was where the question came from. If I had never heard Wakka in the beginning pronounce Tidus as "tee-dus" I wouldn't have thought twice about it being our english pronunciation for the word "tide" and Tidus's relationship to the water.

I think it's pernounced Tee-dus, because the japanese pronounce their i's as an eee sound, I think...but maybe it's pronounced another way for us Americans. Do they ever say his name at the end of Final Fantasy X-2 or anything?

If they did, this thread wouldn't have lasted so long.

His name definitely comes from the Okinawan dialect of Japan, but the problem is that nobody knows how to pronounce that dialect. Even so, who's to say they kept it exactly the same?

No... wait. After directly searching for it, it seems many other sources agree that it's "Tee-da." I'm willing to believe it, if only to let the topic rest. sweatdrop

Variations on voices may be from that voice actor who speaks the lines is not talking with his own basic voice. And they made terrible amount of lines for the game. If I remember right from interview I saw, there was either three hundred lines or three times as much lines as in normal movie. That interview is on official FFX game discs, if anyone wants to check it for sure.
It's bound to be different from time to time just for the length of time that takes to make it all. Plus emotional tones etc.

Remeber people that Japanese people did make him and I sound like e's so thats probaly why its pronounced like that but then the u should sound like oo so I always called him Teedus because I think it sounds better but Either way works, most americans will say Tydus though.

"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.

In Kingdom Hearts it's pronounced Tee-dus like the Japanese would, but I'm sticking to Tidus. Wakka can't talk anyways and that's english dub (now going to look for how it was said in the japanese version, grrr.) It sounds cooler and works with the water theme of FFX. Plus, my dog already knows it as Tidus so I'm not changing the way I call my dog to that weird version. (Yes, my dog is named Tidus.)

"Oh, you ca'n't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. . . ."

...And yet right in Dissidia's review, GameTrailers still says Ty-dus.
