not all shadows are cast by light...
Gabriel walked on the dark road, leading to an unknown house. at least, to many people unknown. Gabriel though, knew what was inside: his target. he got another assignment, this one was big, he'd get alot of money for this hit. he sneaked up to the house, making as little sound as possible. even the best ears would have trouble hearing Gabriel right now. he looked through the window for signs of life and just as he saw a man walking, the lights turned off. "great, shadows." he thought. he looked for another shadow outside and walked right into it. he dissapeared into the shadow, to appear inside the house this time. he slowly and silently made his way up the stairs, hoping to find the bedroom there. as he opened the door, the man was in the room attached to the bedroom. the light was on in the other room, so Gabriel made his way into a corner, where he could hardly be seen. the unknown man came out of the other room and walked into the bedroom. he got into bed and quickly fell asleep. Gabriel sneaked up to the man, took one of his daggers out of the sheathe and assassinated the man with a single hit... no sound... not even from the unknown man... no better kill could be made. Gabriel made his way out of the house and quickly back to his own home to rest. he'd get the reward tomorrow.
...some are cast by darkness.

As the dark shadow of night was cast over the land, a figure of a young elven women was walking through the dark woods holding onto a blue lantern. She had been travelling for many days now and wasn't looking the best. Her quest had been simple, she was told to travel to the human's capital city to report to their king about the troubles her own people faced in this time of war. Though she was noble to her family, she had chosen to do this quest and get away from the restrains that were cast upon her by her parents. They were not at all happy with what she had chosen to do, but they still loved her and wished her luck hoping that she would return to them safely and with good news.
"Hey Liniathe, wait up!" The women stopped and turned around, her pet white tiger and her stallion were running towards her. "Come on you two, I only have two legs and I am faster then you both." The stallion and tiger soon caught up and stood on either side of the women, she began to walk again. "We are not slower then you, we were just helping with some things while you kept walking." "Would that be helping other animals by any chance?" she asked slyly. "Well yeah, we wouldn't help human's, you don't even help Human's." "They just waste my time and that is something I can't spare. Mist, Moondust, please make sure you keep up from now on, don't bother with off road things, am I understood?" "Yes we do understand, though we would rather take a rest. How can you stand not resting, eating or drinking at all through these past few weeks?" "It's something I got used to long ago, besides, if I get too tired, hungry, and thirsty, I am easilly able to find the things I need. Let's keep going."
The three continued on their journey down the road, Lin's skin had grown pale over the last few weeks, she wasn't very well though she choose to neglect that fact and continue travelling anyway. He tummy was always growling, when her companions pointed it out and begged her to stop she completely ignored them and said she wasn't hungry. "How much further is the human's capital city Lin?" Moondust complained. "I am not sure, perhaps a few more weeks or just days, either way we will arrive quite soon if we keep on going as we have been for the past few weeks" "Lin, you really should stop pushing yourself, you don't look so good" Mist said. "Oh come off it you two, I am perfectly fine, besides I have been without food, drink, or water for a month before and I survived" "Though afterwards you took a while to heal up and gain back your stength" Moondust pointed out. "Let's just keep going, I must hurry and take this message to the human's king, my people need help and soon, I won't let them all get destroyed like the minor settlements of my people were." "We understand, but think about yourself a bit too. What if we get attacked, you would be too weak to defend yourself. We two aren't exactly as strong as we usually are either." "That won't happen, and you would be amazed how a true warrior can fight, even in their weakest state they can pull through if they have the will to." "Isn't that just in stories" Moondust muttered. Lin didn't reply, and neither did Mist.

It was late, dark, and very poorly lit. A young woman with short white hair, pale skin, and a dark gray jump suit walked slowly coming out of a forest towards a large capital city gate. She had traveled far on foot, slowly pacing herself as she walked. Looking ahead was a large stone wall with large pillars and a large wooden gate. She approached slowly, her head not looking up but rather door more at her feet. She noticed a man dressed in armor with a large staff guarding the gate. When she got closer he turned his attention to her and asked her a simple question.
“You there, what business do you have here?”
“Me? I’m just a traveling musician looking for a nights rest.”
“You’re not a bandit are you? I’ve never seen clothing quite like yours before.”
“No.”
“Well if you’re not a bandit then I suppose I’ll let you pass.”
The large gate slowly opened, it was sturdy yet still sounded as if it was old and out of shape. The clanks of the metal chains clinked and clanked as the entrance to the city slowly opened. As she stepped further candles were let all around her, it was still pretty dark, but the surroundings were visible for the most part. The stone streets inside of the city were extravagant and everything had a homely appeal to it. She walked forwards to see a grocery cart that had closed for the night. He head was lifted high now, eagerly enjoying the sights and smells of the human capital.
She walked further and noticed a small boy running around, the child’s parents in tow. She walked by trying not to pay too much attention to them as she continued on. Up ahead on the right she saw a rather large fountain where a few older people were gathered. It was quiet aside from the chattering of the people she was around. With her looks she would blend in with these humans and not be given a second thought that wasn’t the same as them. This was good for her, because other cities she had passed through had inhabitants who had despised her for her looks. Just like those who once lived in the city up above with her.
She sat down, not facing those around her at the fountain and pulled her lute from her back. She slowly tuned the musical instrument and began to play a simple tune she had once picked up long ago. Perhaps from another century, it didn’t matter. She slowly closed her eyes, almost weeping, and yet she played. It was not tears of weakness but tears of happiness. She often played this song whenever she was feeling blue or when she was having an exceptionally good day.
When she finished she slowly put it on her back finally opening her eyes to notice a man before her. She looked up a bit awkwardly after noticing that this man was staring at her. She always felt uncomfortable in crowds, and when someone focused their eyes on her too long that too made her feel uncomfortable. She looked up at the man then slowly turned away hoping he would go away, but it didn’t seem like he was going to.
“That music, such elegance, please tell me where did you learn that song?”
“I um I don’t remember.”
She kept her eyes off him even though he was talking to her. She started to panic and began fidgeting with her fingers. The man looked down at her still and continued to talk.
“What is your name? You’re not from around here are you? You’re much prettier than the other girls I’ve seen lately.”
She began to blush at such compliments but now she looked down at her hands and slowly brought her index fingers slowly together trying to regain her composure.
“My name… is Sorrow. Just call me Sorrow. And yes, I’m not from around here.”
The man sat down next to her, slowly grabbing her hand with one hand, and tilting her head towards him so she couldn’t look away.
“You have such beautiful eyes. Where are you from?”
Sorrow noticed the man was clearly drunk, forcing herself away from his grasp she looked over at what appeared to be a bar in front of them. She stood up and slapped the man across the face. She looked down at him with a mean glary look and slowly walked away further into the city.

After what seemed like forever, Lin and her companions came finally stopped and ventured into the forest near by. Lin walked through the forest for a few heartbeats and soon came upon a river. She looked deep into the water and smiled. "It seems this water is pure and safe, there are no strange, nor evil creatures lurking under that moonlit surface." "About time" muttered Mist; Moondust agreed. "We can rest here for the night, there is good food and water to be found where a river is located. You two can stay here and rest, I will go collect some herbs, fruits, and anything else that I can get which is edible around this river" With that she walked away from Moondust, and Mist going deeper into the forest around the lake. After walking for about an hour she finally came to a vine with round orange fruits on them, this wasn't a very common fruit, it was rich in colour, flavour, and nutrients, a brilliant thing to eat to gain back lost fagitude.
"It had been quite some time since last I ate this fruit. This place...It is so beautiful and full of things to get, yet still so mysterious and dangerous. I wonder how the other two are doing." Taking a small knife ffrom a leather pouch connected to her belt, she cut off a few of the fruit from the vines she had found. After this she collected some herbs from the area and even found a tree full of nuts. "This will be a fine meal, now we just need meat, I can easilly catch a fish or two, and maybe even a wild beast!" Lin skipped all the way back to where she had left Mist and Moondust, she was full of spirit and once the other two saw how much food she had found, their spirits had raised as well. "We are having a feast tonight after a long time of starvation!" It was Moondust that spoke and ran around in a circle or two. "Now, now, calm down Moondust, allow me to get some meat and fill up a pot with water to boil before celebrating or eating." "Very well, please hurry, I am starving." Lin chuckled and took out her bow and an arrow.
"I shall get a wild beast or two first, then I will get some fish and some water so our feast may begin. With the herbs I have, the food should be delicious." Moondust and Mist relaxed and waited patiently as Lin quickly ran into the forest in complete silence. She walked around with her senses strong and made sure she made not a sound. The moonlight dimly lit the path she was taking through the forest. The bushes near by rustled and a deer walked out. Lin took up a strong stance and aimed with her bow. She let the arrow loose and it hit the deer through the neck, killing it instantly. Not long after that she killed about five rabbits and quickly took all her catches back to camp. "That was good hunting, terribly sorry my dear animals, but I must eat as well" this she aimed at the dead animals. "Welcome back" Mist said. "Thankyou, now to skin all of these and make some dinner." "Leave my meat raw please." Lin smiled. "Do not worry Moondust, I know what you like, that is why three of these five rabbits are yours to eat as you please, you may also have their insides and the parts I do not eat, like the head and the rear. The same goes for this young deer." "Sounds grand!"
A few minutes passed and Lin had finally finished skinning the rabbits and the deer. She got rid of the guts and the bad parts that she wouldn't eat and threw them to Moondust. After this she caught some fish, got rid of the scales, and guts, then threw the bad bits to Moondust as well. She slowly began to cook some meat from the deer and her two rabbits in a pot of heated water, she added some of the herbs she picked and gave Mist half of the fruit she had gathered. "I hope that fruit is nice enough, if you are still hungry feel free to go off and eat whatever you may like. I know you don't eat meat like myself and Moondust here, so please just enjoy anything you will eat." "Thankyou Lin, I shall do exactly that after I finish with this fruit, then you can give me a brush down!" Lin chuckled. "Very well Mist, that is simple, now eat up, it is rare that we rest at all." "That is so very true" Moondust cut in. Silence soon overcame the group as they ate their meals and drunk water from the lake. Mist went off a few times for something more to eat, once he returned the last time, Lin brushed him down, washed him, and then curled up in her cloak and fell asleep. Moondust and Mist also went to sleep, if any sound was heard however, they would wake up and check to make sure danger didn't target their companion.

[Quick Q...do we have a map or something to base this place off? Like a city we are all in? Because I know my character lives on a coastal city...dunno bout yours] ---- Flint was sitting in front of an inn, the Severed Anchor, in a small town on the coast. The sun was up, shining on the sea, and the wind was calm, so there werent many waves. The city was still waking up, but was soon to be in full swing. Flint reached over his back, pulling off a large, odd looking instrument. It was a hollowed out gourd with a wood neck, 5 wire strings, one shorter than the other, and a few bone tuning keys. The gourd had animal skin over the hole. He moved his hand over it, strumming down with his middle finger and hitting the fifth string with his thumb. Flint's day had just begun.

"Rok'ryuktar Mantoph returns!"
"He's back!"
"Lord Rok'ryuktar Mantoph!"
The minotaur lord, Rok'ryuktar Mantoph strod through the home of his race, having just returned from what his people believed to be a battle with a rampaging ogre who had entered the city-state of Mahn-Tor. In truth, he had simply left the ogre to it's business and visited his friend, Mantie the sparrow. His bold chestnut fur glistened with not a drop of blood on it, which was amazing to the crowd, yet was reasonable as he had not entered battle. In any essence, Rok'ryuktar appeared every inch the great warrior his father had been and his people expected him to be.
Entering the hall of his ancestors, Rarthor Hall, Rok'ryuktar sighed with relief. He hated to be the center of attention, but often was due to his status. Almost immediately after he shut himself in his room, he shed his leather armour in favour for a cloth tunic that was far more comfortable. Then, grabbing a notebook from a table in his room, Rok'ryuktar left to the main hall of Rarthor Hall.
Turning right after entering the main hall, he walked briskly to the back where, on the left side of the vast wall bearing a tapestry of his ancestors, a small (for the home of a minotaur) door lay. Slipping through the door, he found himself in a secret courtyard that he had discovered in his youth. The door had formerly been locked, but he had found the key in the storage room.
Sitting down amongst the flowers in the courtyard, Rok'ryuktar opened up his notebook and started to sketch out a large oak tree in the middle of the courtyard. Smiling, he felt at peace...
"ROK!!!"
Rok'ryuktar, or Rok, as his close friends called him, started and looked around frantically, only to see his childhood friend, Elin'savrakta Takark, grinning at him from beside a birch tree.
"Elin?" he asked, standing up. The roan coloured female minotaur nodded and giggled.
"Who'd ya think it was, Rokky? Your mother? Of course it's me!" Elin replied, stepping forward. Rok looked down to hide a slight blush, then glanced back up at Elin.
"What are you... how did you... why are you..." he tried to start three questions, but didn't finish them. Elin shook her head.
"Don't stammer, Rokky. I found a key lying on the ground, and realized that it opened up the door to here. Then I found some papers that belonged to you, so I returned the key and the papers to your room. Sorry if I went out of line..." she explained, looked sad. Rok shook his head frantically.
"No, no, Elin. I'm glad you found the key because I was going frantic about losing those papers!" he exclaimed. Elin giggled again.
"I should go. Bye, Roksteroodles!" she sang, walking towards the door. Rok fumed for a moment over the foolish nickname, then calmed himself.
"It's okay, Rok. She's just having fun with you. Now, where was I?" he spoke to himself, glancing around. Then he looked at his notebook and the great oak tree.
"Oh, yeah..." he groaned, sitting down to sketch again.
((I had an idea for some interaction with my character. Someone can come across Mahn-Tor and in turn, Rok. It might not seem obvious from this post, but he wants to leave))

The sun soon came upon the horizon and shone down on Lin and her friends, the night was peaceful, no creature had attacked the camp either. With the sun shining on her face Lin slowly opened her eyes and covered them with her arm. "Too bright..." she muttered silently. Lin pushed off the ground and wrapped her travelling cloak over her shoulders once more, she poked at the hot coals left from the fire and added some leaves and a few twigs to it. Once the flames were back up, she added some larger wood and made some porridge for breakfast. She looked at what was left of the deer and smiled. "It seems my young friend Moondust decided to finish it off." Smiling to herself she soon ate her breakfast and woke up her companions. "There is food for the both of you, I am going to have a wash in the lake, be good now and don't make any mess" "Okay then. Though I still hate been woken up so early in the morning." Moondust slowly sat up and licked his paws. "I have to agree with Moondust there, I would like to sleep longer too, but I guess that won't happen" Mist said looking up.
"Of course it won't happen, we haven't time to waste on too much sleep or resting. If we don't get to the human capital city soon, then I will be very angry, and you two don't want that now do you." Mist's and Moondust's ears went against their heads. The last time Lin had gotten angry, she had taken it out on them, and not in a pleasent way either. "We don't want to go through that again" they said together. Lin smirked and walked off leaving the two to do as they wanted. She travelled lightly with only her sword by her side and some clean garments in her hands. Once she arrived at the lake she got undressed and washed herself close to the bank of the river so she would have easy access to her clothes and sword. Lukilly this time, nothing even went near her and she found it easy to get washed and dressed in her clean garments. She dusted off her travelling cloak and put it around her shoulders once more. She dressed in her armor and equiped her sword. Shortly after all this she returned to camp, washed Mist down and brushed through his hair. She done the same for Moondust and quickly packed everything up. "Now we shall travel again. There are a few strange places where beings live that we must pass through, hopefully none try to attack us."
"Yes I do as well" said Mist. "And the same for me" replied Moondust. Lin smiled and quickly started moving out of the forest towards the road. Mist and Moondust travelled close behind her. Neither of them had anything to carry at all. Lin however carried everything, which was just a small leather pouch on her belt, a larger leather pouch on her back and of course her weapons and armor. "When we get to the closest town, we will have to restock on everything. Travelling won't go so lightly once we travel further from the forests and along the coast, or by sea." "We are going by sea at one stage?" groaned Moondust. "Going on those floating wooden objects make me feel sick" Mist cut it. Lin chuckled at the two and continued walking. When she got to the pebble road once more she replied. "Those wooden objects are called ships, or boats, and don't worry Moondust, we won't throw you into the water" she smirked. "You scare me sometimes Lin..." muttered Moondust. "Oh do I, well tough luck, we can't be too far from a town, hopefully." "What do you mean hopefully? Do you even know where you are going?" "Well of course I don't know where I am going Mist. I have never actually left home before." Mist and Moondust both frowned. "We're doomed" they said together.
"Saying that just makes me want to kick you both, it is amazing just how much alike a horse and tiger is." "We are nothing alike!" "I don't agree with that either. That tiger is much more immature" "Why you...damn horse!" "Enough you two, I will get angry soon if you don't watch it. I don't exactly like not sleeping in a warm bed, and sleeping in the wilderness. The sun rises so early I can't keep sleeping, and the nights are cold and dark. But you do not see me getting so unsettled and so pesky as you two are being now do you?" "No, we're sorry Lin" they said together. "Good, now let's just relax and continue, if we come upon a town or city, we can stay for a whole day and night and start travelling again tomorrow. That will be the only rest for another few days or weeks, I really don'thow much further we must go." know "I thought you did..." "Same here..." "Well I don't, I just go the way my instincts tell me to" Mist and Moondust both went very silent. All this time they had believed Lin knew what she was doing and where she was going. Now after hearing what she said it was a completely different story. They hesitantly continued to follow her, it was obvious they were now worried however.
As Lin and her companions continued along the pebble road, it began changing to well tended pavement and they noticed more carts passing by and trading goods. "Seems like your insticts got us closer to a city or town, but those creatures look strange, mostly like bulls walking on two legs." "I agree with Mist..." Lin smiled at the two. "I know what they are, it is not wise to bug them, and it would also be wise not to talk about them or anger them in any way. I highly dought they would invite us warmly, they like to treasure their own nature shall we say. We won't be staying here, I think it would be best to just pass through, though we would need permission to do so. If we are denied permission, we will have to go around and that would add a few more days to our adventure." "Are they really like that?" asked Moondust. "Well that is what most people say, though I haven't met one personally, so we may be welcome here, though we would get strange looks because I am an elf and you two are animals." "Hopefully things work out, I feel as though my hooves are waring away..." "I don't think we should talk so much, no one else can understand you except me..." "That is true." So with that the group walked further up the path until they got to the city gates which were sealed from intruders and unwelcome guests. One of the guards at the gate saw the three and glared at them. "What business do you have here elf?" he asked coldly. "I just wish to pass through" Lin replied. The second guard looked at Lin with a curious interest and walked in through the gate. He would get the lord of the city to ask him what to do. "You will have to wait. My companion went to get the lord of our city. He will choose if you may pass or not." "Very well."
(Totally jumped on that chance I did. ^^)

Flint started strumming off a lazy tune on his gourd-banjo, singing an old sea shanty as he did. "Though the night be dark as dungeon, not a star to be seen above, I will be guided without a stumble into the arms of me only love" he sang in a higher toned voice. "I went up to her bedroom window, kneeling gently upon a stone, I rapped on her bedroom window, 'My darling dead do you lie alone?' Because Im a rover, seldom sober, Im a rover of high degree, and when Im drinking Im always thinkin' how to gain from my love's company" A small crowd was forming around him, listening. One of the ships in front of him was about to cast off, and the crew was standing on deck listening to him. [I hate how I always get small posts >.<]

Waking further and further she had finally gotten away from the creep she meet earlier and stumbled upon an inn. She dug around her pockets only finding a small amount of currency. She pushed the small door open and pressed further into the establishment. She walked slowly forwards, trying to make as little eye contact as possible. She turned to the old man at the counter and handed forward what little she had.
“One night stay is all you can afford. Room 13 G, up those stairs on the right.”
Sorrow grasped the key from the man and slowly walked up the stairs. She turned slightly looking at the numbers on the doors till she found the one that was hers. She inserted the key and turned the handle slightly, closing it after herself. Setting her lute down on a chair next to the bed she plopped down and raised her arms over her head.
Oh man I’m exhausted.
She sat back up and unzipped her jump suit. She tossed it to the floor and then started to take off her undershirt. She tossed that aside on the floor as well. Now only in her white undergarments she pulled open the sheets and slipped inside the covers and passed out.
A dream is but a dream, or only as it may seem.
Everything is white. The sky, the ground, everything is bright and cheerful. A group of people walk around dressed in white with large wispy wings on their backs. They seem content happy, full of life, yet not alive. The people here drink strange wine and laugh only smiles around. Sorrow is suddenly there standing before them, she has wings just like them, but hers is a dark black colored wings. The people turn to look at her and begin to frown. The surroundings begin to get fuzzy. The floor shakes and her wings rip from her back, blood gushing everywhere. Then she begins to fall towards the ground bellow that which she once stood. Everything goes black.
The dream ends.
Sorrow awakens in a bead of sweat. She lifts up the sheets and quickly gathers her clothes. Slowly zipping up her jump suit she walks to the door grabbing her boots, putting them on as fast as she can. She turns the door and walks down the stairs giving the key back to the inn keeper. She walks out the door slowly shielding her eyes from the bright morning sun.
Looking down once again she walks forward, her mind lost in deep thought. As she walks she notices people around trying to avoid them, and especially the fountain. As she walks forward she doesn’t’ notice the tree in front of her and walks right into it. Falling to the floor she hits the ground hard. She notices blood coming from her nose and some minor scratches on her arm.
“Ouch.”
She turns her head and looks up, noticing a shadow casting down on her. She’s still dazed from hitting the tree and looks up to see a hand reaching down to help her up. Without thinking she accepts the gesture of kindness and allows herself to be helped up. She stood smearing the blood from her right nostril and holding her right arm out. She looked up to see the face of the man, and it was none other than the man she spoke to briefly the night before.
“Are you all right? You had quite a fall.”
“I’ll be okay.”
“You’re the girl from last night. Sorry if I scared you away last night. I’ll admit I had a little too much to drink last night.”
Sorrow showed a small smile, barely noticeable to anyone.
“It’s okay. It’s just that… Well I’m kind of used to that. People hitting on me I mean.”
“That song you played last night was beautiful. Just like you. You are really talented with that instrument.”
“Thanks, I suppose.” She began to blush and turned to look away from the man.
“Sorrow was it? I haven’t introduced myself. I’m Drake.”
“Well it was nice to meet you, but I must be going. I probably won’t see you again.”
“Where are you headed?”
“I don’t know.”
“Well if you don’t have a destination why not stay here a while and enjoy everything this city has to offer?”
“Well to be honest, I’m broke. I make little money as it is.”
“Well I can help you get a part time job here. That should help you fund your journey.”
“Okay but I um…” She trailed off just as he stomach began to grumble.
“I’ll tell you what; I’ll get us some food, on the house.”
Sorrow smiled and gave a small nod still holding her arm.
“We should probably get your arm looked at though.”
“It’s okay.”
She lifted her left arm towards her right arm and her fingers began to glow a bright green. Slowly the scrapes and bruises disappeared from her. Then she moved her hands up towards her face and the bright glow magically cured her of all injury. She slowly lowered her arms to the amazement of the man before her.
“Wow I’ve never met someone who could use white magic before. I thought it was only a myth. That’s amazing. Can you heal anyone or anything?”
She nodded.
They both turned and started walking towards a small eatery and sat down at a table. Sorrow adjusted her seat at the table and looked across it at Drake ordering food for them. She looked away at the wall and started to day dream wondering how far this would go and what might approach her in the future.

A small crowd was gathering around Flint, some of them clapping to the beat of his lute-sounding banjo. He kept on singing, grinning as he did. "She raised her head from her feather pillow, raised her arms up around her breast, saying 'Whos at me bedroom window, disturbing me at my long nights rest?' 'Its only me, your one true lover, open the door and please let me in. For Ive come on a long nights journey and Im here drenched to the skin" The crowd was now clapping along, and because most of them where regulars around the bar and knew Flint quite well, sang the chorus with him. "For Im a rover, seldom sober, Im a rover of high degree. And when Im drinkin' Im always thinkin' how to gain my love's company" The crew on board the ship waved, and he watched it pull away, standing up from the chair outside for the final verse. "She opened the door with the greatest pleasure, open the door and let me in! We both shook hands and embraced each other, 'till the morning we lay as one. 'Well now me love I must go and leave you, though the mountains be high above! Well, I will climb them with greater pleasure now that Ive been with me only love" he sang, sitting back down as the crowd finished the chorus. "Morning all" Flint say casually, smiling. A wave of replies greeted him. "Well, Im leaving today, so while we are all here, any requests?" he added. A voice called out from the crowd. "Hold on, lemme get my drum, we'll play 'Excursion' " it said, and a few moments later, a bearded man stepped out of the crowd and sat beside Flint. "Ready?" he asked, producing a bodhran and starting to play.
"Well it was on this Monday morning and the day be calm and fine, a Harbor Grace excursion with the boys who had the time! And just before the sailor took the gangway from the pier, I saw some fellow haul me wife aboard as a volunteer"
