Empathy is more a surface understanding right? When you say empathy, I could mostly just mean that "Boy, piloting that mech must suck. It probably hurts a lot and carries a huge burden." That's empathy in my mind.

But when I said relate, I meant some of the life experiences and thoughts the characters have. The mecha thing is an obvious no when it comes to understanding their feelings about it, but the characters do speak and think plenty of times. There were times when I felt as if I was re-living the situation but instead I was watching it. That was the relationship I was talking about.

I know, we use the word too loosely. If you wanted to speak in general, yes, empathy is the correct term, but there is always a case in which the emotions of the characters, especially in Eva, can be transferred to real life.

sweatdrop That is true I guess... I should've been more specific, as in people saying they know what its like to be someone in every aspect of the person. It is possible to relate to little bits I suppose, even if aspects are different.

In certain cases the relate thing can be used, I just too often see people smacking it on in weird places that it doesn't belong, so I got ranty on it without thinking sweatdrop My brain isn't working right now either.

Well, overall, you were right. People do use the word relate way too much, even when it's really not true. Most anime shows have bizarre and fantasy situations, so if someone does say "I relate to him/her", they're going to have to get a little more specific to save themselves from sounding ignorant.

Hmm.... well, my friend at school showed me a bit of the manga, so I decided to go buy it. After reading it, I thought it was great. The story is very interesting, and has very cool twists later on. The artwork is very well done, and I think it's the first manga that I bought.

I like EVA because you get a sense of becoming one with the world.....

I like EVA for it's funny, the things I have in common with the main characters, its psychological references, it keeps you thinking, and it makes you question the reality of the Western Monotheisic religous sects (esp the Catholics), the battle sequences, and if and when you understand everything about EVA, you have reached nirvana (becoming one with the universe)......... smile

And you have WAY too much time on your hands.

Though, I swear if a college had a degree in Eva, I would so take it. What in god's name could you do with such a degree? Who cares....

Probably become a pyschologist and a theologist...

Psytheologist - some sort of art of granting psychiatric aid to deities... I like it. Where can one get this Eva degree of which you speak?

"So, god, lets dig back into those painful memories..."
"Well, when I was younger, I sort of lost my temper.... you know that little flood thing where everyone died except Noah?... Well I was having a bad day.... The guilt haunts me"
"Yes Yes, I'm sure it does...."

O.o lmao...

I don't know, maybe some funky college in Japan has it?

I actually felt bad for Shinji there because he wasn't doing anything at that point. It was like "You a**, he saved you"

Stupid Toji. My school is full of Toji's too. I wish to go Eva 01 on them. domokun

Toiji comes a long way as a character. He may not be the brightest, but at least he is compassionate. (mostly about his sister)
