Evelyn's gentle smile curved upwards until it threatened to break into an outright grin.

She had no need of words. Words were the building blocks of lies. Spiteful and deceiving, they could be used to sway one's opinion this way or that, to make excuses for that which is inexcusable, and to mask one's true nature. No matter how artfully phrased, words always seemed to lessen emotions- stripping them of their untouchable purity and demanding that they comply to a rulebook full of verbs and nouns, syllables and punctuation.

But... she didn't know how else to ask.

Lavender orbs took in every movement of the stallion at her side, watching for even the slightest quiver.

Not far off, a small colt had discovered a delicious patch of fresh green grass. "Omsh-Nom-crunch" He chewed with his mouth open, his little teeth grinding the blades into a pulpy mash. His eyelids were half-closed, his little body relaxed in a pose of perfect contentment. Every now and then he would glance at the sky, taking in the brilliant display of color.

His subtle nod- that flickering gaze- she sighed, content. It was more than enough.

"Bu' Daaaaaaaaad."

Damn. Why was it so hard to raise children? First life proved that little girls weren't as easy as their adults versions seemed to show...even those were hard. But now life proved a second time that boys were tough...if not worse.

Especially when one had three....and all three insists on having completely opposite personalities. Why did Evelyn have to run off with the 'dumb' one? It would have been so much easier to handle a day if he had been stuck with someone like him...someone willing to play.

Or even take a walk.

"Ian, kiddo....please. Please. I want to take a nice walk, and enjoy the night sky with my boy. Can you please just give me that?" Lavender eyes lingered on the dark gray colt that sat dormant a few yards away from him. He didn't move...or wouldn't. Ian was tough to handle...maybe not for his mother, but for him. Bliss wasn't used to having to just sit and do something...he wanted to GET UP and do something.

In all honesty, he wanted to find Evelyn. To see her again, standing there in all her beauty....

"Dad. I wan' sit 'ere. I wan' sit 'ere and watch the sun-set. I don' need to walk 'round. Don' need no danger." Ian spat back, digging his little bum further into the ground. How come he didn't get it? How come Daddy just couldn't stay put for a second and understand his middle child for once? It was dark out, for one thing...and that could mean there were many unthinkable creatures lurking about....and it could put Ian in danger. Or Bliss...whichever was worse.

So he didn't move. Didn't move that was, until he felt his legs lift off the ground and looked up, seeing nothing but lavender eyes staring into his own smoky ones. His father, of course...the large stallion blended in so perfectly with the night. And his father decided, as far as Ian could tell, to pick up by his back hide.

And the little colt didn't like it all that much. Bliss wasn't trying to hurt him obviously, nor did it...but he didn't like being up in the air. "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" He screamed at the top of his lungs, a hint of the slightest bit of amusement hidden in the voice.

Kureno would have been content to stay in this spot forever, if nothing disrupted the peaceful atmosphere around them. The upward curl of Evelyn's mouth drew out a tiny smile of his own, and a slow extending of his wing once more until its feathers brushed over her back was made... until the silence was shattered by a young, male, high-pitched voice.

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!"

Onyx-tipped ears folded backwards in annoyance as a scowl replaced the peaceful expression that he had worn moments before, withdrawing the feathered appendage back to his side once more. It seemed that life was out to interrupt any vague sense of happiness that he might attain... and his belief in that was only further cemented in this as his gaze settled upon just who was coming over the ridge in the distance.

Oh hell no.

Bliss was the absolute last person in the world that he desired to see at this moment, in this place, with this company. At any other time, he might have simply curled his lip and ignored the foolish stallion... but he couldn't very well do that with Evelyn at his side, and Bliss' own son romping about some few meters away.

A frustrated snort was his only acknowledgement to the dark stallion's entrance, turning his eyes to glare fiercely at the sunset rather than watch him approach. He might be forced to tolerate Bliss' presence, but it would be a cold day in hell before he offered him any sort of acknowledgement or welcome.

Evelyn blinked, the scream startling her out of her peaceful state of mine. Was that...?

"IAAANNNNNNNNNN!!!" Connor screeched at the top of his lungs, his young ears instantly picking up the distinctive whine of his brother.

His little legs worked frantically as he charged about the bolder at a near-gallop (he didn't quite have the coordination for such a graceful movement, his motions more akin to a chicken's frenzied run than any gallop his parents may have produced.)

Well, that screech answered the question of who had been the first screamer.

Her lavender eyes widened as she watched her youngest son come careening about the corner, totally out of control. "CONNOR- Watch ou-"

Connor scrambled to keep his balance at his mother's instance, skirting about Kureno and racing down the path. "IANNN- IAN IAN IAN!!"

Evelyn let out a sigh of relief... and then her thoughts caught up to her.

Ian had screamed, but the sound was full of protest instead of panic. Which meant he was being dragged toward them against his will... and the only person who would be dragging her son somewhere was... Bliss.

She closed her eyes mournfully, her shoulders wilting and her head lowering in defeat. What had promised to be a wonderful evening was turning into chaos.

Ooh-ho, boy. Had he known his brother was within hearing distance, he wouldn't have shouted as loud.

Or at all.

But whatever, it already happened and there was no going back. After having been placed back on the ground, the small colt braced himself for the appearance of Connor.

"Connor! CON-OR!!!" He managed to yelp out, humoring the strange little colt he had the pleasuring of calling his older brother. Ian hadn't even noticed that upon hearing Connor's obnoxious screams, Bliss had taken off in that direction, leaving both the boys to fend for themselves, in search of their mother.

She had to be near. Evelyn wasn't the type to leave her boys randomly in the middle of no where and go off on her own. Unless perhaps she was with Kureno. No. Not even he was that foolish.

Lavender eyes darted back and forth with an incredible amount of force that they could just as well popped out of his head. In fact, the stallion had to pause for a moment to gather his vision back together and then continued to walk, his head turning just a tad as Connor zoomed past him.

Such a silly boy...and so glad he had Ian with him instead of Connor at that moment, he knew his boys would lead him good.

"Evelyn?" Bliss called out, innocent flowing through the tone. "Are you around?" If she was, she'd respond of course...wouldn't she? She had too! He knew her well enough, she wasn't one to be down right rude and stay away from the father of her children.

So she had to respond...but Bliss had a sinking feeling she wouldn't.

A scowl was steadily etching itself deeper and deeper onto his dark muzzle, oceanic hues narrowed as he glared into the distant horizon. He could hear Bliss' steady footfalls leading him closer, and the calling of Evelyn's name made him bristle and shift uncomfortably.

The admission of feelings changed nothing, in the end. Eve still held loyalty to the imbecile, and Kureno respected that, even if he didn't like or understand it. They were raising three foals together, after all... even if she didn't feel anything for the idiot- a fact which he doubted- his own reluctant confession meant very little in the reality of their scenario.

A hesitant glance was given towards the grey dappled mare before his expression shuttered closed into its usual stoic facade, emotions hidden once more behind a steely gaze. His head lowered as he waited for a word of command- half-expecting her to ask him to leave.

It wasn't an unwarranted expectation- if she wanted things to remain steady with the father of her children, it was only logical to assume that she would try to avoid the drama of Bliss meeting the 'other stallion', as it were. His wings tensed and lifted in preparation, and he hazarded an inquiring look towards her as he took a step forward, towards the edge of the precipice.

If she wanted him gone, he would comply willingly.

Connor skidded about a tree and leaned back on his haunches, coming to a skidding halt a scant two inches from Ian's nose. "IAN- Whut're you guys doin' here? I thought Da was gonna watch you 'n' Jami 'n' then Ma was gonna take me t' see the sunset bu' here you are 'n' we DID see the sunset but now yer here 'n'..." he paused, out of breath. "...'n'..." frowning thoughtfully, the colt tried to remember what it was he was going to add on... and couldn't. "... yeah."

Evelyn's eyes widened considerably at Kureno's posture. Did he truly believe that, knowing what she now knew, she would banish him? She shifted slightly, moving closer to the one stallion whose company she desired even when her greatest wish was to be left alone.

Her dappled form darkened by the shadow of Kureno's upturned wings, she took one last look at the fading sunset. "... Know that if you ever leave my side, it is by your choice alone." her murmured words were as soft as a lovers caress, her shimmering lavender eyes intensified by bittersweet sorrow.

"Here, Bliss." Her melodic voice was skewed by heavy emotion, its lovely cadence faltering at the last word.

Even though her heart lay elsewhere, she would not betray the father of her children. He deserved to know his foals, at least, to raise them as his own...

But when the children were grown...

Was he serious?
Cause boy did he not need this right now. First Dad and his rather energized mouth, and now Connor's? The colt gulped down hard as his brother came charging at him, completely afraid that this may end horribly. Was he going to crash....?!

Well, nope...but that was way to close for comfort. Ian fell back on his hind legs, smoky eyes staring at the colt in front of him. It took him a moment to process what Connor was trying to say, but he got it all...it wasn't that hard considering they shared the same parents, so they were practically the same....they understood each other right?

"CONNOR!" He mocked, before continuing, "You guys were out ta see the sun-set? Da' said Ma was lookin' for you 'cause you got away! Jami's wid Va-Nilla, Da' made me come wid 'im!"

Well, if that didn't solve something, then nothing did...so why did Bliss really want to go out? Was he using his boys to get something?

Here, Bliss
Ah! There we go! Her voice was music to his lonely ears, and he longed for it to be something only him alone could ever get the privilege of hearing. If only he could make that be true...it would mean the world to him.

But wishes didn't mean anything if they weren't meant to be...

The stallion trotted to the spot where the beautiful sound could be heard, a devilishly handsome grin plastered onto his face (he practiced, often...when no one was around...boy did he ever want to impress Evelyn...) and stopped abruptly when he sensed someone else.

Could it be? No...no....it couldn't! The worst of all his nightmares was coming true! She had disappeared into the night when he wasn't looking to go off and find him. And even worse, now Connor knew of his existence! Better to keep the other two far away as possible.

"Evelyn!" He faked a cheery tune, the grin that he wished to lure her in with faded quickly and what was left looked utterly pathetic. "Oh! What a surprise! I was just taking Ian out for a walk, the boy does love his nightly adventures!" Lies, all of it....but he couldn't help himself. "What brings you...and Connor out at such an hour?"

"Oh!" His lavender eyes flashed to the stallion, pretending as though he had not seen him before that very second. "Kureno, is it? What a surprise!" Not a lie, it truly was something he hadn't expected...or had, but never wanted to admit that fact...

He had ventured out to find her, and now that she was here, he wanted to leave....to hide in a tiny hole and never come out...Kureno was with her now....and he couldn't do anything about it...not like last time...the boys were born...Evelyn was technically free now....

....And damn it he couldn't use Vanilla Swirl to his advantage, either. Rainbow Sherbert had distracted her well enough, she wanted nothing to do with stallions nowadays....

It was with slight confusion and bewilderment that he obeyed Eve's near-silent request, folding his wings back against his sides and settling his weight more firmly upon the soil beneath his dark hooves. It was obvious that she was as uncomfortable with the situation as he, if not moreso- but why then did she not desire to make it simpler? Bliss undoubtedly held a large part of her heart, as well as her loyalty, and Kureno had no desire to step in and ruin things, angry at him though he may be.

A small upward curling of his lip into an unfriendly sneer was his only response to the chocolate stallion's obviously false cheer, turning a brief, narrowed glare his way before facing the sunlit horizon once more with an irritated snort. He didn't believe for a moment that Bliss hadn't seen him, or at least suspected on some level that he was accompanying Evelyn and her son. He had no desire to start a family feud- not with Evelyn and Connor involved, anyway.

"And I suppose 'surprise' holds a different meaning for you than for the rest of it, does it, Bliss?" he snorted, making it a point to ignore the other young colt that bolted in and out of his vision. In all honesty, he didn't hold anything against the foals that came of the two's breeding... but he wanted absolutely nothing to do with their father, and any foal that was constantly present around the imbecile would undoubtedly take after him.

He turned his head in the opposite direction, heaving a heavy sigh as he laid eyes upon Connor once again, playing with his brother. Just for a moment, he let his mind wander, tried to comprehend what things might be like if anything had happened differently... but shook his head to banish the thoughts a moment later. He never dwelled on the past more than necessary, and he wasn't about to start now.

A miniscule glance was stolen towards Eve, pondering her own reaction to the ignorant stallion's entrance.

Evelyn saw right through his cheerful facade. Did he truly expect them to believe his forced charm?

She had spent many days with him. His moods were easy to decipher- he was a simple stallion. Perhaps the long hours spent with Kureno in silent contemplation, their companionable silence broken only by the quiet sounds of their breathing, had made her irregularly attuned to reading that which is left unsaid... or perhaps Bliss truly was as simple as his offhand remarks made him out to be.

"You know well that Connor loves to watch the sun set. Those brilliant colors are the sweetest of treats to him." A thread of exasperation ran through her melodic voice, the patient vexation of one who must make idle chatter on a daily basis.

Her lips twitched with silent mirth at Kureno's words, her eyes sparkling with good humor as she cast a glance at the winged stallion. When those lavender eyes returned to the form of the father of her children, they chilled, her expression fixing itself into a mask of polite resignation.

Connor frowned, his brow furrowing. "Nuh-uh! Didn' ah tell you guys that we was goin' t' see the sunset?" He frowned, stomping his little hooves irritably. "I swea'- I tol' you guys!"

Near the verge of tears, his lower lip jutted forward into a pout.

Evelyn glanced over at two of her three sons, quirking one brow as an endearing smile bloomed upon that lovely face. Seeing Connor's stubborn pout, and Ian's contemplative look, she turned back to the stallion before her- and her eyes cooled once more.

Her expression was as politely attentive as ever, her posture as relaxed- but anyone who knew her well enough to read her eyes would see her silent disappointment.

"Did you need something?" Her feelings for Bliss had never quite blossomed into love- attraction, yes; loyalty, yes; dutiful obedience; yes. Even affectionate resignation. But not love.

Evelyn looked once more to Kureno, the adoration in her eyes causing them to glimmer alluringly.

Not love.

Had he?
Ian pondered the thought for a moment, going back into his memory...nah, Connor hadn't said anything to him at least...perhaps to Dad but not his brother. Or maybe the influence of both his brothers was finally getting to him and Ian was becoming a goofy young colt like the rest of them.

NO! That was most certainly not it.

"Ah dun 'member you saying nothing. But ah, geez Connor dun cry!" His voice turned immediately to a pleading tone, not wanting to deal with the effects of tears streaming down the young colt's face. "Maybe Dad forgot 'bout it?"

Yeah, perhaps Bliss just forgot to tell Ian about Connor's little midnight adventure...perhaps...

The fake cheer would have been so much easier to pull off had he been in his younger stage but as he grew up, he learned and witnessed too many things to be considered innocent anymore. Happiness didn't go along well with any of the heartaches he'd been put through...he didn't know what it was like to put on a smile and be completely unaware of pain.

Although Bliss may have been able to had Kureno not been there. Surely if he had just been Evelyn the stallion would have been off the wall jumping with excitement (not literally) and quickly reverted back to his old self...but not anymore. He had to win Evelyn back, but was fighting a lost battle....
He just didn't know that part yet.

Nor had he spotted the constant glances the two of them stole to each other when Bliss wasn't paying full attention. The voices of his sons caught his ears for a moment....had Connor caught his father in a lie? Would Ian come over here and complain to Bliss that he hadn't told him the truth? And would Evelyn find out he wanted to see her?

He wanted to show Evelyn how much he truly cared but he couldn't. Heck, she probably already knew how much he cared, but couldn't return the favor so refused to show of her knowledge.

Oh how he hated Kureno, and not just because he had stolen Evelyn for the time being, but he was admittedly jealous of the stallions smarts. It was like a total slap in the face. "No." He assured calmly, "I just didn't know you'd be here...I didn't know either of you would...be here."

Then he turned his attention to the mare before him, such a wondrously beautiful sight and yet it didn't belong to him...it belonged to that other stallion.
"I must have forgotten then I suppose." He lied his way through the situation, hoping it would go unnoticed.

But the words Evelyn spoke next not only caught Bliss off guard, but they also tore a tiny hole into his heart...as if he needed a reason to be around the mother of his children?

"I, uh....no." He stuttered, blushing deeply as the hotness of his cheeks match the color of his coat so nothing could even be remotely spotted. "Like I said I was just taking a walk! And I saw you so I decided to say hello."
