I read a ritual in a book once that called upon a deity by symbolically reenacting her myth of descent into the underworld. That might work too.

Innana/Ishtar?

Yeah, I've come across a few sources myself that recommend 'developing a relationship' with one god(s)/goddess('). Which would be mostly whats been said, learn about their myths, feats and failures, relationships to other gods, and correspondances. But it also recommends something like pray and talking to them regularly, and such so that they can get more accustomed to you too. I think its a pretty good idea, but may not be as practical for a being you may work with once.

As far as a pick up line, I guess I'd use something like, "Hey, big, deep, and inspiring, wanna join in an unholy union that will cause the cosmos to shake and tremble before us?"

When I was studying ritual magic with the aid of deities, the popular way to do it was to look through mythology or folklore and find things that the particular deity liked. For instance, certain stones or fruits or the like. Then you call on that deity to get their attention and if they feel like it then they'd come.

Invoking a deity is like asking for them to come and help you and evoking a deity is more like you make the work area hospitable to them and they come of their own volition. Either way, I'd think you'd have to give them some reason to help you.

What if I couldn't acquire a favorable sacrifice or condition due to availability of resources? Say a deity I want to contact is only known for liking apples and no apples grow around here, for example. Am I screwed?

You could offer apple juice maybe. A picture of an apple, dried apple chips, etc. etc. Or you could just do what Mitsh mentioned and do something that resonates with the god/goddess you're trying to contact.

Oho, good call. I didn't really think of that, the picture of- or similar item thing, I feel dumb now for not coming up with that on my own D: well, gotta learn somehow! And yeah, Mitsh had pretty damn good idea too. Thanks much to you both.

It was Inanna. I read this ritual in Konstantinos' Gothic Grimoire.
