"This way," Craneberry chirps, "I'll show you!"

And with that she takes flight, so eager to show Lichen the nest that she flies instead of taking the long "safe" way around. Once airborne she’s not anxious anymore and until she starts to tire she will fly with as much grace and finesse as any fledgling. A trained eye can still pick out the small deviations from the norm, but despite her slightly odd movement pattern Craneberry gets the job done.

The nest is in a crack in a dead tree, slightly lower than normal Sentinel altitude and safe for most prying eyes. Only a curious fledgling would think to try to see what inside the crack and the only reason Craneberry was near it in the first place was to avoid flying between two platforms. She discovered that by jumping and gliding from branch to branch, first going downward, and then climbing upward, she could get from one platform to the other without having to fly for real. The act of jumping and climbing was probably more exhausting to her than flying would have been, but fears are rarely rational.

Today, however, she flies straight to her secret place and is ecstatic to find that the nest seems to be occupied still.

(Should we cut it off here and resume when they’re almost there, or keep going? New thread or same thread?)

Lichen hangs behind the fledgling, for two main reasons - first, to give herself plenty of opportunity to observe young Craneberry in flight; and second, to swing past a juniper branch that was hanging low, heavy with its fruit, and snag a talon-full to bring along.

Curious and cautious, the Medic hangs back from the crack that Craneberry has found, and she scans the area for a likely perch before coming to a graceful landing nearby (but not near enough to frighten the mice!). "However did you manage to find this place?" Lichen asks, canting her head to the side and taking note of the tell-tale traces of mouse spoor.

"Here, they might like these," she offers, drifting the small cluster of pungent berries over towards the fledgling with a lazy effort of her Will. "Leave them nearby, preferably in a place they've already marked with their feces. Rodents trust things that smell like their own refuse."

((We can leave off here, sure! I don't think we need to worry about a new thread, unless you really want one.. we can skip forward to when they are near to approaching if you'd like, and we can settle on a new post-order with our Apothecary.))

Craneberry accepts the berries, and holds them carefully in her beak while pondering a good place to leave them. She places them between a slim branch and the trunk of the tree and tries to use her will to wedge them firmly in place. Her weak prodding doesn’t do much more than move the berries around, but she seems proud enough that the berries move at all. When she’s happy with their placement she flies over to Lichen.

"Oh, I was just resting on that branch when I noticed the crack and wanted to see what was in it," she explains in a whisper, "I was going from the platform there, to the platform up there."

She can't seem to stop grinning and flaps her wings vigorously, eager to start their journey.

Drywood finished up the ditribution of his latest mixture and gave the ten mus a brief but careful inspection for any sudden, unforseen side effects. Happy to find none, he gave the dewy-eyed, cowering little creatures a cheerful nod and hop-skipped over to his workbench to clean it up - a task that he applied himself to with the same meticulous care he used for mixing medicines and poisons.

Once everything was up to standard he took a step back and beheld the perfect order of his organised little world. It calmed him in ways that he usually wasn't even aware that he needed, to have everything in its own place, like this; No speck to mar the smooth surface of the workbench, nor the polished wood of his bowls; No herb, moss or leather pouch out of place. It was good. It made sense.

With a smile and a sigh of satisfaction, Drywood turned and left his "lab" behind, fluttering down into the living-space part of his large home, immediately setting about with making it just as neat and well-organised as the upper level. His efforts were only slightly foiled by Tails, who dozed in his nest, thick ringlets sloppily hanging out here and there. That was acceptable, though. He gave the serpe an affectionate inspection, and she acknowledged his presence with a very slight coiling motion.

Longtail had been hunting, and was feeling gloriously full, comfortable and generally at peace with the world.

It has been a very, very long journey. Under normal circumstances Lichen might have been able to make it to the Apothecary's distant territory in a little over two or three nights of steady flying - she is no stranger to the long haul thanks to her time flying with the Elites - but given her present company... well, it's been a long journey.

It has also been an unexpectedly pleasant journey. Despite her best intentions, the healer has been teaching Craneberry as they fly. Frequent breaks are needed to give her muscles time to rest and remember how to work properly, after all, and what better way to justify the necessary breaks than with impromptu lessons? Lichen is not willing to damage the young Ghost's developing ego by making the fact that she's holding them back too obvious, and the youngster's keen interest in.. well.. everything makes passing the time rather easy at least.

So their flight has been punctuated with brief, educational, and entertaining stops. A few moments to inspect some particularly interesting mossy growths, and talk about how some mosses are better than others for padding open wounds. An on-the-wing hunting trip, followed by a discussion of how sharpened squirrel thigh bones can be used as needles for blood-letting. Seasons of experience in teaching young aspiring Medics comes to the forefront on their journey, and Lichen can't help but indulge Craneberry's interests.

As they spend more time together, it becomes increasingly clear where those interests lie. So the focus of these mini-lessons shifts, towards the various plants in the forest and how they can be used to make the medicines that Medics use. The exact measurements and details of how these medicines are made are unknown to Lichen, so further questions are met with uncertainty - but they are on their way to see an expert. Perhaps if Drywood is willing, that is knowledge he can share.

Finally, the border of the Aberrant's territory looms near. Lichen calls out to announce their presence as they pass the border, hooting with clear strength. 'Let us enter,' her call asks, 'we come seeking your services.' She trusts and hopes that her voice is recognized - without waiting for an answer, the Mist and her traveling companion continue onwards.

Craneberry have had so much fun that she doesn't have time to be anxious about flying or falling. She has been sleeping soundly each day, and fortunately for Lichen the fledgling has been tired enough not to talk her eartufts off when it's time to sleep.

She has learned a lot on this trip, eagerly soaking up every bit of knowledge Lichen has provided. At the moment the fledgling is singing cheerfully to no tune in particular.

"Feather moss, white moss, wound moss,
Reindeer moss... ‘s not a moss."

"is... is... A lichen!" she finally exclaims, a bit winded from her improvised singing. She quiets down as Lichen announces their presence and flies in silence behind the Medic as they enter the territory.

Drywood's head swivels around at the sound of another sentinel's call, and his ear tufts slowly rise. After a swift scouring of his memory the voice checks out as belonging to a certain skilled medic, and his amiable smile slips smoothly into place.

"Looks like we'll be having a guest, Tails," he coos softly. Then he hops over to the nest's opening and gives a clear reply: 'you may enter,' his call says. 'I'm over here.'

The serpe coils slightly, but today she just can not be bothered to move too far from this spot: Her food is still heavy in her belly, and she's made herself so comfortable. Fine, let the visitor come - Today they will feel the cold rejection of her indifference.

"I trust that you remember what I asked of you," the healer prompts, as they continue into Drywood's territory. "He's a little.. odd. But he's the best at what he does, and if you recall what I told you about the importance of giving the correct dosage of certain medications, well," the implication is clear. In some situations, only the best will do.

"Drywood's type is quite old, with a heritage that can be traced back to the wars." Or so they claim, but the Mist is above such petty allegations. "Some would call him an Aberrant, of course, but that sort of name-calling is not appropriate for one who serves the clan." And with that she lets her warnings subside, choosing instead to focus on the path they take - and their surroundings. It's been a while since she was here last, and the Apothecary's choice of Companion has always been somewhat unnerving.

When they arrive at Drywood's tree she lands lightly, moving aside to give plenty of room for the fledgling. Glancing about warily for the Serpe, Lichen smiles and dips her head to the Apothecary in greeting - waiting for her charge to introduce herself first (since the healer is curious to see how Craneberry interacts with strangers!).

Craneberry listens and remembers, and the tension in the air makes her feathers prickle. She is suddenly very aware of her wings, her tail, her legs tucked close to the body in flight. Suddenly the whole trip feels like a build up for this meeting with the legendary and slightly scary Apothecary. Can he help her?

She is pants slightly as they draw close to the last leg of their journey, and the tension makes her clack her beak. She quickly snaps it shut however. She's not going to be afraid. Nope. Not scared. Nooot even a bit intimidated.

The landing is not very graceful and the fledgling needs every bit of room Lichen has provided, but Craneberry is glad to be off her wings. She's sore, but she's been more or less sore after every landing during the entire trip, and it's an almost pleasant soreness that tells her that her wings have carried her a long way tonight.

Craneberry bows awkwardly after her rough landing, trying to act more grown up than she feels.

"G-good night Mr Drywood.. Sir."

Perched comfortably just outside of the entrance to allow his guests as much landing space as possible, Drywood greets them both with his usual smile. He notices Lichen's surreptitious glance but does not have time to follow it, to find out what she might be looking for, before the smaller one attracts his attention.

She doesn't move right. She flies well enough, obviously, or she wouldn't have made it all the way out to his remote territory, but the fatigue of the flight makes the strange stiffness in her movements immediately apparent to the apothecary's keen eyes. The moment he had spotted the two pale shapes, he had suspected that Lichen was bringing him a patient, and now that suspicion seems confirmed. He gives the mist medic a brief bob of a bow and a smile, and turns back to the little one just as it - she - addresses him.

"A Good Night to you both!" He intones cheerfully, tilting his head ever so slightly as he observes the little Ghost curiously. "What can I do for you?"

"Well met, Drywood," she inclines her head in his direction, giving the respect due to an apothecary of his stature. Aberrant or no, he's quite talented (and of a respected old bloodline) and despite her own relative level of renown a little bit of flattery never hurt.

One wing is extended to indicate her weary charge, as needless as the gesture is. "I've brought Craneberry to see you, as I believe that the skills of the clan's Medics and Healers will not be enough to allow her to fully regain the power of flight. I'm sure that you can see what I mean, hm?" Again, she makes heavy use of flattery in her admission of the shortcomings of her skills and the skills of her fellows. The Medics rely heavily upon the expertise of the Apothecaries of the clan, and given her stature... well, suffice it to say that she is somewhat more responsible for ensuring that the lines of communication and collaboration remain clear and open.

"You will find that her mind is as flexible as her wings are not. She's quite interested in the tools of the trade, and has had me run ragged naming various plants and their uses as we made our way out here. Feel free to ramble on at her while you work, I'm certain that she will enjoy it," and equally certain that the fledgling wouldn't be able to stop herself from asking questions, no matter how intimidating she might find Drywood to be. With a small nod to Craneberry she ushers the fledgling forward, to let the Apothecary tend to her properly.

PostPosted: Sun Jun 08, 2008 2:13 pm

Craneberry steps closer, staring up at Drywood with huge eyes. She can't decide if she should be more scared or nervous or curious, but the curiosity is slowly winning.

"Lichen says..." she starts uncertainly, "Lichen says my... my wings need to learn how to move properly. I fell... But she fixed me. But my wings forgot how to move."

The little shadow demonstrates by showing the stretches Lichen has taught her. It's easy to see that some of the movements bother her, but Craneberry is determined to carry out the entire routine even if she's a bit sore right now.

When Lichen speaks up, Drywood's attention is momentarily diverted, and he responds to her politenesses with cheerful little bows. He is paying just enough attention to her words to remember to be polite himself:

"Ah, I am honoured that you thought of me, Miss Lichen. I will do whatever I can to... assist your patient."

He smiles at the little Ghost as she steps up to him, but it fades into a very intense interest as she begins flexing and stretching. "I see..." he mumbles, voice as low as a serpe's hiss, but he quickly recovers both his smile and his joviality. "Yes, your wings forgot to move, did they? Miss... Cranberry, was it? Let us step inside here, and I'll see what I can do for you."

He steps aside to allow the fledgling to enter first, making eye-contact with Lichen. "Something happened to her chest bone? Or just the muscles connecting to it?"
PostPosted: Wed Jun 11, 2008 8:48 am

It pleases her to see Craneberry step forward and speak so clearly, her chest swelling with pride - as if the young fledgling were her own charge, somehow. While Lichen did not raise the Ghost (by any means!) she's certainly seen more of the youngster than even many of the Minders in that enclave. So she can't help but feel somewhat responsible for the fine young lady Craneberry is turning into.

Drywood's proclamation is answered with a nod, her attention more on the fledgling than anything else (although she is still keeping a wary eye on their surroundings). The healer seems quite content to remain silent until she is addressed directly.

"Hm? Oh, yes. Broken, actually, almost past repair. Craneberry was quite lucky," she replies, the implication clear - the fledgling is lucky that Lichen was near enough to help, as the damage was beyond even the best Medic's ability to heal. "There was collateral damage to the muscles and the connective tissue in the area, of course. It seems that the lingering stiffness and.." she trails off, frowning slightly as she gazes at her patient, "...while everything is healed, the muscles are reluctant to move in the manner they used to." What she does not say out loud is that she's honestly not sure where the source of the reluctance lies. Is Craneberry too frightened to move properly, or have the muscles healed wrong? Or is it a combination of both factors? Whatever the reason, Lichen has learned over her seasons of healing that sometimes the medication heals mental wounds while it helps to fix physical problems as well.

Lost in thought, she gestures for the Aberrant to precede her inside. It's fairly clear from Lichen's mannerisms that she intends to remain silent and out of the way unless questioned directly - Craneberry is Drywood's patient for the time being, and she will not tread on his talons.

Craneberry trembles with anticipation as she steps inside, beak slightly open in awe. So this is what the hollow of an Apothecary looks like? Smells like... Sounds like... It takes a moment to adjust to the slightly darker darkness inside but after that the fledgling swivels her head around to take in everything. Where are those mysterious cures and medicines? This hollow is not very different from the few Sentinel homes she has seen in her short life.

There's something smooth and shiny over there and Craneberry waddles closer to check it out. She has never seen a Serpe before, and at the moment the coiled companion doesn't even look alive to her.
