If the kid is too young to enjoy it, and understand they're simply too young and won't want to play it. Of course, if you give them money for each lesson they'll agree, but they'll still try to get out of it, and won't practice much. xp

Oh, I play piano. I've been taking it for four years... My current pieces are Flight of the Bumblebee, by Rimsky-Korsakov and Variations, by Glinka. I wanted to learn piano 'cos I used to sit at the piano and try to play things (you know, we've all met that kid who never took lessons who fiddles at the piano and is SO proud of it). Well, I decided that if I like piano enough to fiddle around with it, I might as well learn it properly, and so I did. I really love piano.
I would like to play the violin, because it seems to versatile and interesting to play. I may begin lessons later this year... I also wish I could sing, but, alas, I have not the voice.

I now have a violin. It hates my fingers, is about two sizes too small, and I don't care. domokun It's fun, even though I have absolutely no idea how to play it. rofl

I play the piano and cello, although to what level of proficiency is debatable. Took piano lessons since I was 5 and stopped after six years and took the cello up when I was 11 and stopped playing it when I went to college. I can also sing rather badly in the baritone range (not a lot of anything is made for the baritone range, it's either tenor or bass).

If I wanted to continue playing an instrument I would pick up both instruments in due time and just be a free-improvisor on both like a jazz musician.

I still play piano, used to play the violin, but my pride and joy is my little old larynx. smile I'm a soprano. Unfortunately. Even though I love it, so do half the female singers in the world today. Thus, the competition is awful.

Oh, and perfect pitch is awesome but it can also be a b***h, because when you're told to do a dictation in such and such key but it's being played in another key... O_o
And I admire anyone with perfect pitch that plays non-C instruments and can still play C instruments.

Instruments I'd like to play: Lute, lyre. Old stuff like that. And I'd LOVE bigger hands for the piano. I can reach a 9th... on a good day. sad No Rachy for me.

I had to fly home alone for this Christmas break. This was rather exciting in and of itself; fortunately the Atlanta airport has lots of shops so I just camped in a bookstore during my three-hour layover. And I flew Delta, not Southwest this time, so we got an in-flight movie ("Cinderella Man") and more food.

ANYWAY: I am cello-less for the holidays. D:

No, the airline did not lose my luggage. (My one checked bag made it safely through both flights!) I didn't bring my cello; I couldn't because it's a hassle to fly with and restore afterwards. Cello got left in its case (strings slightly tuned flat to decrease the tension, and laden Damp-It) in my room, under my fleece blanket. My dorm building is the warmest on campus, but I'm worried about conditions when the campus is closed for a while.

Mom and Dad say they'll rent me a cello for the holidays, but it won't be the same... :(

Flute (7 years) (Incl. normal, piccolo, alto and bass flute)
French Horn (3 years)
Drunkit (2 years) (I can do random percussion stuff)

...and I can "play" saxophone and trumpet.

I wish I could play... My horn decently D= It's such a stunning instrument... Makes me melt inside when I hear it played as it should be.

I really want to learn how to play piano properly... I knew when I was really little, but when I moved states I stopped lessons ;-;

Hooray!

I am taking a Theory lab class which includes singing and keyboard skills, so I might learn how to (sort) of play the piano.

I play the flute and have for... a very long time. I also teach it. I started on the recorder when I was four and moved on to the flute when I was seven. I'm also trying to teach myself the piano. My instrument at the moment is a beautiful silver-plated Miyazawa with a silver head joint. I've had it for about five years and it's well played. I also have a Yamaha piccolo that I've had for a while but rarely sees the outside of the box. I've been working more with it recently since I found the Vivaldi piccolo concertos. I adore my flute. I started playing because I heard the sound of it and just said "I'm going to play the flute." My parents got me an old broken-down starter's flute when I was six but I actually wasn't big enough to hold it, so I started lessons when I was seven.

I've been playing keyboard for 12 years and I heart it heart Hopefully when I get back from Japan I will be able to save up money for a new keyboard really quickly... By some miracle... I'm self taught, but I would really love to start getting proffessional lessons in the hopes I will improve somehow... I know there is always room for improvement, but at the moment it seems the only thing I have trouble with is speed and maybe reach... I have the sheet music for one song that I just can't play anywhere near fast enough (It's called Eternal Harvest, composed by Nobuo Uematsu, FF fans should know what I'm on about) and I can reach a 10th, I don't know if that's good or bad or what though (Anyone care to enlighten me?). I don't know anyone else who plays keyboard or piano or any instrument as seriously as me, so it sucks not having anyone to talk to about playing.

I'm going to Japan for 10 months, I leave in 2 weeks... I'm considering buying a violin before I leave but that leaves no real time (or money for that matter) for lessons, and I don't think I could put my host family through my learning xd .

I played Cello for a while, but it definetely wasn't for me. I was practically forced into it. I was given the choice of continuing with percussion in the school band, playing cello or being kicked out of the music wing altogether.

I also play a little guitar and am thinking about getting lessons for that as well...

Sometimes being self taught sucks. Some people look down on me for being self taught even if I can play as well as them. I'm thinking about buying a violin before I leave but I don't think 2 weeks is going to be enough time for me to grasp playing well enough for me to be comfortable about taking one accross the globe with me... I can't take my keyboard to Japan with me cry 10 months without playing... I don't know what I'm going to do.

I wanted to take up some form of music major at university but because I didn't study music performance at high school I can't get in. Le sigh -_- Maybe one day ^^

/rant (Sorry about the huge long post!!!)

Uematsu rocks!

a 10th is pretty good reach. the largest chord I've seen that is supposed to be played by one hand, in any piece of music, is an 11th, but you can always 'fake' something like that, by playing a fast arpegio. There are people here who can just reach the octave...

If you're ever hankerin' to play, you can always pop into a music store somewhere. If you're feeling a little down, play the most impressive thing you know biggrin

I don't think you should have problems with reach, what do you mean by that? and speed doing what, chromatic runs, arpegios, jumps?

You might be able to get a nice violin in Japan! no doubt you can find lessons there... Then again, you're allready there, so I'm sure you know that.

I don't think being self taught is such a bad thing, if you study plenty of books. Still, it might be good to see a teacher every couple of months, just to make sure that your technique is ok. I find a lot of self taught pianists [hell, even a lot of classically trained pianists] lift their hands too much- your wrists shouldn't move up or down at all, at least, in russian or french technique.

I should definately get some lessons later this year, when all of my bad habbits are well and truly drilled in. whee
